Why is it that whenever Ohio wins a game against a large program it suddenly becomes their worst loss ever?  It makes my blood boil reading these newswire reports recounting the Maryland game.  I understand it is a large upset but to focus on how this is suddenly the worst Terp team in the Gary Williams era why not give a little credit to the team that won the game?  There is so much parity in college basketball now that a win like this should come with a little open mindedness.  The fact of the matter is that Ohio played a much better game than Maryland last night and derserves the credit for that.  Minus a late run that game could have been a blow out.   Maryland players like Giest and other fans are delusional if they could leave the game last night and say that was a game they should have won.   That's why we don't play games on paper my friends.

I agree...  In looking at the Maryland Student paper, I saw these quotes from the players...

"I mean, this is super embarrassing. I can't even go out there and go home," guard Greivis Vasquez said. "This is just horrible. We didn't play hard; they outworked us. We weren't ready - once again."

"I'm definitely embarrassed," guard Eric Hayes said. "For Ohio to come in here, being in the MAC conference, and coming in here and beating us on our home floor - it's definitely embarrassing. We took a step back tonight."

"Coach said earlier that they hadn't beaten anybody with an RPI in the top 150," Bambale Osby said. "And then they come in and beat us on our home court. That's tough."

I guess the whiners should have shown up and played more focused.   This is something that OUr team & coaching staff need to remember when they play Ball State or a similar team later this year.

I watched the game on Comcast Directv 659 last night....it was clear from minute 1 who the more talented team was - and they weren't wearing red.

Those Maryland players need to look in the mirror. It's their own lack of talent that's the problem....not the perceived inferior opponent.

Those are the same reactions many Ohio fans have had in the past, and will have in the future, after home non-conference losses to "lesser" conference teams.

Also, pay attention to how excited we are on this board.  Our collective excitement with the victory mirrors their dissapointment.

We have posts on here excited about Sportcenter highlights and Jerome Tillman dunks and etc.  At Maryland, that's a normal expectation.

So, I understand why they are thinking what they are thinking.  Much of it is denial.  But, some of it is what is to be expected.

Like Bobcat Love said in another post, we need to make these types of wins a normal thing.  Hopefully we can do so in the next 10 days.

- and that right there is why they lost.  I still do not believe that the less talented team lost.  I'd say top to bottom, on sheer talent level, we are even with Maryland's team at best.  But a lot of that talent is young.  They start sophomores 1-3.  And their bench is comprised of freshmen (not the Fab 5 freshmen), but good young freshmen.  Their lack of experience (game-wise as well as respect for what "smaller" schools can do), is what did them in.  That and the fact that our team is put together well(and executed a great game plan to a T).

I'm more irritated by Hayes' comments.  Would it have made a difference if we were back-to-back MAC champions (tourney and reg. season-wise)?  I'm gonna go out on a limb and say no.  If it's not a BCS conference team, "it's the end of the world."  Wow.  Sorry to say Eric and all other kids at "bigger schools" ... the best talent top to bottom can be found in the bigger conferences.  But the best basketball from top to bottom, is generally found @ the mid-major level.  For a number of reasons.  I don't know, maybe because those schools know they can't just skate by on talent like the big boys.  What's sad is I don't think they understood what just happened.  But oh well, that's there problem.  Hopefully one or more of the freshmen that played or watched the game, learned a valuable lesson about the game on this level.

Any time you lace'em up, you are subject to being beaten.

Shout out to Ronnie Thompson again, who during the post-game had a straight face made of granite, when the guy in the studio said something to the effect of... "Ronnie Thompson is holding steadfast to the fact that this is not an upset."

More TALENTED PLAYERS? No

Better TEAM?  Most likely

Better TEAM last night? No question

Top to bottom, Maryland has more talent than OU, but they do not play well together because they are so young. If you ask me, Vasquez is more of a liability for their team than a asset. He just plays out of control too much and takes bad shots, esp late in the game. He also insists on shooting 3's all game when he makes a very small percentage.

HAHA! That's awesome! Dan Steinberg - what a dork! I saw him on Washington Post Live - he is awful and should not be doing TV.  His voice absolutely drives me up the wall - hopefully he sticks to his column from now on.

Man, that's awesome.   Out of all the ranting we do on this site and that is what gets quoted in the Washington Post.   I just hope I can get the chance to write a similar topic after Ohio stuns Kansas.

Unless I somehow missed it, there was absolutely no coverage of the Bobcats on the regular ESPN Sportscenter out here in Los Angeles, which I was very disappointed with. After all, beating Maryland on their home court is tantamount to winning the National Championship in my opinion. What a great victory for this team. Any chance that they can at least make a game of it on National TV on ESPN 2 against Kansas, and then make a run deep into the upcoming tournament in Hawaii?! That would get some much needed respect and attention for the program.

I have to disagree with our esteemed colleague DG's statement on the blog arguing that Miami's win over Mississippi State is more impressive than our win vs. Maryland.  Miss. St. is 5-4, RPI 148, with its best win over RPI #216 Tennessee-Martin.  Plus Miami beat MSU on a neutral court.  Maryland may be down this year, but they currently have 4 RPI Top 100 wins, including a victory over Illinois.  Plus we beat them on the road, not a neutral court.

For that last reason, I'd also rank our win at Maryland ahead of Kent's win at home vs. Mason.  Mason may well prove to be the better team, and Kent's margin of victory was more impressive than ours, but winning on the road vs. an ACC team is more impressive overall in my mind than defeating a fellow mid-major at home.

Of course, I'm also biased...

Hilarious!  I always enjoy looking at website statistics, particularly the referrals.  People find their way to websites all kinds of different ways.

I have to give Ronnie his due. I taped the game an watched it yesterday. He did a very good job.  I also have to credit Ronnie and Steve Buckhantz for doing their research. They knew the Bobcats better than Warren does.  Usually on local broadcasts the announcers spend 90% of their time talking about the local team but that wasn't the case. They gave as much if not more info about us than they did the Terps.

On a side note, if you have never heard Buckhantz before, I was really hoping that we would have hit a late 3 to ice the game so we could have heard his signature "DAGGER!!!!" call.   He does a great job on the Wizards games.

I really enjoy Buckhantz!  His "DAGGER!!!!" call, is really animated during big wins.  I still remember the call when Gilbert hit the game winner against the Bulls in the playoffs.  Unfortunately since we were on the road against the hometown Terps, had OU hit a big 3 to close it we would have gotten his other call...

"BACK BREAKER"

I would have taken either one though.

As far as gaining respect, I'm not too worried about the disrespectful comments from some Maryland fans/players, even though some of the comments are just plain inaccurate.  If we really want to gain national respect, we have to earn it on the court vs. worthy opponents, and one road win over an ACC opponent will not earn that respect.  It's a big step in the right direction, though.

Programs like Southern Illinois, Butler and Gonzaga had to earn the national respect they get.

Another good step for Ohio toward national respect would be a respectable showing vs. Kansas tomorrow.

No question our win is better than Kent State beating Mason AT HOME, are you kidding?? Mason is decent, but still living off the image of the final four team a couple of years ago that has graduated most of those players (except Thomas and Campbell).  I've seen them play a few times this year, including a three point victory over Hampton at home and a LOSS to East Carolina on a neutral court near their home in Fairfax.  As you said, Maryland still has a very impressive home record and beat Illinois.
