Carter Whitt back in the portal. 8 points 3.5 assists in 23 mins for Furman after leaving Wake Forest.

Feels like someone who might end up at NC State for a little veteran depth, but feel like he could step in to the Jaylin role.

Dude's not a good enough shooter. Less than 40% from the field, 27% from three. I'd rather roll the dice with Sheldon in those minutes than have the ball in Whitt's hands that much.

Boals' offense requires a lead guard that can shoot. Hard pass on Whitt.

Looks like his numbers improved with more PT. His minutes doubled and he went from 30% to 39.5% (I think we can call that 40%) this year. 3P% is horrendous but he’s efficient at the line at 85% this past season.

Whitt’s calling card out of HS was facilitating. Our track record with PG’s + Whitt wouldn’t be a horrible combo. Every player in the portal is going to come with his warts, when we’re playing with lower budget.

AJ Braun from Wright State in the portal (6'9", 215). Averaged 12/6 for the Raiders and had 6 double-doubles. Looks like he got better and better as the year went along. Not a very good FT shooter but has improved throughout career. Doesn't play outside (only 2 career three point attempts). I believe we offered him out high school.

To quote Mel Kiper during the NFL Draft: "he fits an immediate need."

Had 16/7 against Toledo early in the year. That's gotta count for something right? Looking at the Wright State stats, it looks like he was the 2nd option when it came to post players or played the traditional big man role with Brandon Noel was the stretch 4 type.

This is one of those guys I used to think we could land, then proven wrong by how expensive accomplished size was last year.

But who knows.

Second opinion time.

What level do you think this multi-position 6-7 guard/forward will end up at?

I wonder if the level of competition at ut-martin will be held against him.

Can that guy really demand a boat load of NIL cash?

Looks like he can barely jump over a phone book. Can he even dunk?

Anyone have other sites for up to the minute portal news?

On3 and 247 have free portal things.

Sometimes the players don't show up instantly and there is no category for the ones who say "but I reserve the right to go back to my current school if needed"

And there is no category for the ones in the portal looking at NBA options.

JUCO Advocate, Portal Report, Portal Updates, and Transfer Portal for Playing Time are are solid Twitter accounts who are top of it. Individual media pundits like Goodman and Rothstein are always breaking news. To a lesser extent, Jake Lieberman seems to be well connected in the lower level transfer ranks. He had both our JUCO scoops in January.

Numbers are similar to Myles Foster a year ago. We got outbid for him. That’s why I say that. But hey, maybe after this season Boals realizes we might have to overextend ourselves now.

There will be a point, and I hope we're almost there, where we can say Look... we cannot give you $100,000, but what we can give you is playing time on a winning team. If you want $3K a game to playing for a losing team. Enjoy that. I hope you invest well. If you want $1-2K a game to play for a 20+ win team and have a chance at winning the conference... welcome home.

Market yourself back home as a winner. All you're getting at Western Michigan or Illinois State is whatever you took at signing, because no one is rolling out the red carpet for 11 win teams.

I guarantee you that Javon Brown is not happy he took the money. Foster had a great year, but he would've had a great year anywhere. Instead he took it to a below .500 team.

One thing to keep in mind is being a starter/coming off the bench. Have to think AJC and Hadaway are slotted in the 4/5 next year. AJB has a starting role.

That could be the difference between us getting a Foster or someone less accomplished.

Although, would it be out of the realm of possibilities to play bigger next year with AJB at the 2 and Hadaway at the 3? Clayton likes to shoot the 3 more anyway. Might as well let him play stretch 4 at this point and start a true post-presence if we're able to.

Especially when you factor how far off EJ4 fell-off post injury. As I type this out, I think I'd actually prefer this given how much we struggled on rebounds.

If we do play tall ball and have Hadaway at the 3. He's gotta become more consistent shooting the 3 ball. Just thinking about that lineup gives me goosebumps lol, can't imagine us having that kind of lineup in the past.

That we got outbid doesn't mean we don't have money to afford a guy like this, or couldn't have afforded Myles Foster.

We have no idea how we allocated the money we do have, and whether that was done well. It's entirely possible we got "outbid" for Myles Foster because we spent our money elsewhere.

I'm still partial to the guy at UT-Martin

A 6-8 athlete who can play any spot of the floor and shoots 3's like a maniac.

EDIT: Never mind. He's already heard from eight SEC schools, UCLA, Kansas, etc.

I don't want to give up on EJ4 just yet. We have no idea how injured he was. Was he playing hurt the rest of the season because he's a warrior? That could be what led to his regression. Plus, it would suck going from averaging 12 ppg to getting less time. I think physically, if he's healthy, he is a double-digit scorer, defender that will score 1,000 points for us. I would love a starting lineup of Reef, EJ4, AJB, Clayton and Hadaway with the knowledge that Clayton is a 20 minute guy and a new big man from the portal is going to split the time and be a 20 minute guy. I also like knowing that Hadaway can be a 25 minute guy and give his other 15 minutes to that portal guy also if that portal guy may not be a starter but will get 30 minutes per game. We need a Jaylin replacement BAD as well. Burris is a solid, slow-paced kind of guy who will mesh well. I look at him as a dude who isn't afraid to mix it up inside but also will need to add some muscle. Nichol is the wildcard. Is he ready to step up in year 2 like Hadaway did? Or is he Mason McMurray/AJ Gareri 2.0?

Like many others, we’ve contacted Troy D’Amico of SIU.

If we do play tall ball and have Hadaway at the 3. He's gotta become more consistent shooting the 3 ball. Just thinking about that lineup gives me goosebumps lol, can't imagine us having that kind of lineup in the past.

Yeah, that's the part of that lineup that gives me most pause. Versus Akron Hadaway looked terrified to shoot threes. 2 of his 4 attempts came on possessions where he caught a pass at the three point line unguarded, immediately looked to pass, and then realized how open he was and seemed to feel obligated to shoot. Need a lot more confidence and authority from three out of a starting 3.

Numbers are similar to Myles Foster a year ago. We got outbid for him. That’s why I say that. But hey, maybe after this season Boals realizes we might have to overextend ourselves now.

I think if we were able to comfortably meet Myles where he was at we would have. Do you really think Boals went all in on Mitchell and Ike (your fave) and made the choice to stop pursuing Myles? Doubt it, based on needs. He had a lot of suitors driving up his price.

I think it's entirely possible that Boals gave money to existing players to stay, gave some money to Mitchell and Ike to come, and may have come up a little short on Myles as a result because he misread the market.

How a coach allocates what money he does have is an important part of the job now. He's got to spend it wisely, and I think the assessments here tend to lack a lot of nuance and boil down to "we can't afford that guy" or we can. We spent money last year, but none of us really know how or where it went.

A coach doesn't have to just be a teacher and recruiter these days, but also the manager of a salary cap. Except he can't restructure players, cut them outright, and doesn't even know exactly what the salary cap is because it's not officially part of the team, and it's different for every team. Tough job.

Yeah, but let's be honest -- not that tough. No shortage of people very willing to do it for 700k.
