On3 and 247 have free portal things.

Sometimes the players don't show up instantly and there is no category for the ones who say "but I reserve the right to go back to my current school if needed"

And there is no category for the ones in the portal looking at NBA options.

JUCO Advocate, Portal Report, Portal Updates, and Transfer Portal for Playing Time are are solid Twitter accounts who are top of it. Individual media pundits like Goodman and Rothstein are always breaking news. To a lesser extent, Jake Lieberman seems to be well connected in the lower level transfer ranks. He had both our JUCO scoops in January.

Curious to hear people's thoughts on who they think we're most likely to lose to the portal.

A silver lining to the MAC being so terrible this year is that I'm not sure a 3 seed that lost in the semis of the conference tournament is going to have to fight off majors for a ton of our roster.

These are just wild guesses, but here's who I think are risks:

-- Shareef Mitchell: he ended up here because he's close with Hunter, and wouldn't surprise me if he looks for a situation where he has a higher liklihood of a tourney berth.
-- Elmore James: Hope it's not the case, but his role changed a lot post injury. Not sure how much of that was playing hurt, how much was Brown's return, but in the first 10 games he seemed like one of our best players. He kind of disappeared down the stretch.

The team's needs are very, very clear. We need a lead ball handler and we need a big. But that lead ball handler's key. When I look at the roster for next year, hard to see where the offense is going to come from reliably.

I did catch wind that there's an internal emphasis on trying to figure out how to keep Mitchell and Clayton. The latter surprises me a little bit. Clayton's size and ability to hit the 3 plays at the P5 level, but I think he'd be a role player and not a cog. Then again, I have no idea what motivates anyone these days.

I'd like to think EJ4 will be slotted right back into a starter role next season. I can't see him leaving. Wiz might see the writing on the wall if more bigs are brought in but that's all I really have.

I think in the end, Mitchell leaves and the rest stick around.

Those handles are a hilarious read on the state of the portal and the sport at large. Most of them are like "(Lafayette/Cal Poly/Texas A&M Corpus Christi, etc) freshman so-and-so has entered the transfer portal. The 6'3" guard averaged 7 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists on 41% shooting."

I hope Reef stays and I truly believe Clayton loves it at OU but if a team like OSU were to come calling, you never know. I would like to think that all of OUr guys love it at OU and love the staff but as we've seen, NIL carries a lot of weight. If Aidan Hadaway can make $100,000 at Georgia, he's going to go to Georgia. If the guys return that have eligibility, we need to add complementary players. I know we all want a 6-8, 6-9 post guy but who doesn't start in that scenario? Hadaway and Clayton have earned their time. It will be interesting to see what unfolds. I never thought we'd have such a mass exodus in football and look what happened.

So taking your example, is Hadaway allowed to go find out if he can make 100k at Georgia without entering any portal or declaring anything? Or do we at least still have those restrictions, at least in theory, in place?

I think this team might be a little better next year if we find that Dwight Wilson type of stat guy. But if we don't keep Shereef, we might have a bigger issue at the guard spot. Love Sheldon but he just hasn't shown he can score at will. Great 3pt shooter but sometimes we need a little more than that.

Ha, yea. They're all basically re-sharing the same info. Good enough resources if you want to avoid paywalls.

I think Sheldon can see similar improvement that we saw with Hadaway once he gets the opportunity to open up his game a little more. It was clear that Sheldon was assigned as the "shoot first think later" guy but I think he has more in his bag. Once Hadaway was solidified as a starter, we started to see him flourish and I think Sheldon has that same possibility. I'm very bullish on his defense as he is quick and explosive.

I am nervous about portal season. Not sure we can afford to have too many guys leave as we were already pretty thin and obviously had 2 open scholarships and limited NIL resources. Once again, our positions of need carry a steep price.

If we need to find a Dwight Wilson to be a little bit better, that's not a good thing. Wilson was one of the best players in the conference.

If we're relying on that sort of difference maker in the portal, that's a tall ask.

As for Mitchell, I'm sort of torn. He mostly won me over this season, but I think a team that has him as #1 ball handler is going to have a limited ceiling. He's fearless, gets to the line well, and doesn't turn the ball over. But unless his three point shooting and passing improves, I worry the offense will struggle.

This is when the staff needs to be aware of talent at all levels to fill holes. Not everyone in the portal costs a premium that can contribute.

100% agree, curious if JUCO/NAIA/D2 guys are looking for payment like D1 transfers are? You would think there are diamonds in the rough out there that have been overlooked and will take a D1 offer without payment just to take the next step.

At least THREE Fiami players are in the portal on day one!!

Steele must have peeled the paint in the locker room after Ohio blew them out on their home floor on senior night in front of that paltry "crowd."

I don't buy his mister nice guy routine he puts on in front of the camera. He is related to John Groce, is he not?

MAC portal jumpers starting to come through. Notable names are NIU's Zarique Nutter and Xavier Amos (nearly 30 ppg combined), Miami's Jaquel Morris and Ryan Mabrey, CMU's Derrick Butler, and WMU's Seth Hubbard.

I heard some mumbling about this by the announcers on a recent broadcast, but no specifics. Is this for real? Do you know exactly how they are related?

Add Ben Wight. He didn’t exactly see a lot of time at Toledo.

They are half-brothers. Same mom.

He looked lousy when he did. That's some foresight by Boals five years ago.

Carter Whitt back in the portal. 8 points 3.5 assists in 23 mins for Furman after leaving Wake Forest.

Feels like someone who might end up at NC State for a little veteran depth, but feel like he could step in to the Jaylin role.

Jesse Burris can get a lot of buckets, but who knows how much he will play as a freshman.

Saw Whitt re-entered last week. Would love to revisit him as an option. Looks like his minutes got cut down towards end of January. Dropped 20 in his last game, though. A few 10 assist games early on.

Another way to get an idea of the staff might be going for is who they recently followed.

For example, Boals just started following NJ Benson who entered the portal from Missouri State. Exactly what we need, but as we learned last year — experienced and productive size comes at a premium.

Dude's not a good enough shooter. Less than 40% from the field, 27% from three. I'd rather roll the dice with Sheldon in those minutes than have the ball in Whitt's hands that much.

Boals' offense requires a lead guard that can shoot. Hard pass on Whitt.

FWIW, I'm able to see Verbal Commits players, their previous school and new school. You have to pay in order to see the transfer date, I guess? Sorting by school is nice on this one.

Colin Granger back in the portal.

AJ Braun from Wright State in the portal (6'9", 215). Averaged 12/6 for the Raiders and had 6 double-doubles. Looks like he got better and better as the year went along. Not a very good FT shooter but has improved throughout career. Doesn't play outside (only 2 career three point attempts). I believe we offered him out high school.

To quote Mel Kiper during the NFL Draft: "he fits an immediate need."

Had 16/7 against Toledo early in the year. That's gotta count for something right? Looking at the Wright State stats, it looks like he was the 2nd option when it came to post players or played the traditional big man role with Brandon Noel was the stretch 4 type.
