I am bitterly disappointed in the results of today's game.

It wasn't supposed to be like this. But since 1968, it's been like this. Optimism was sheer folly.

And does anyone want to revisit the discussion from a week or two ago about how it's not such a bad thing to commit excessive penalties? You can't tell me the holding/illegal motion/roughing the passer/etc. . . didn't affect Ohio in a negative way today. Give me games like against Iowa St. (1 penalty) 99 out of 100 times.

This was a repeat of the SDSU fiasco. Fall behind and then throw out the entire game plan immediately. Yes, Rourke went down in SD but Harris was handcuffed by the play calling. #7’s turn today.

M#@&$ was better but not as much as the score indicated.

Miami was as good and better than the score indicated. How do we have a pro-prospect at QB and Edelman Jr with an array of soft handed tight ends and RBs who can catch and we milk the playclock EVERY FREAKIN TIME? Option pitch is MIA. The sweet fake keeper dropback deep ball is MIA. The middle of the field is MIA. DANG.

Today was our annual turd drop game. It's not so much that we lost a game that we were supposed to win (although favored). It's that we didn't look good in any aspect of the game. Offense sucked for nearly three-quarters of the game; the defense gave up too many big plays, too many penalties on both sides of the ball, and even special teams didn't play well, and the coaches dished up the same old gruel they've been serving all season (please, sir, don't give me any more). There's no way that MOFO should have won by two TDs, but they did. MOFO's a good team but there's no way they should score 30 with 3 of 12 on third down conversions, when two of them came on the final drive to run out the clock.

I don’t get how our offense fell off so far from last season. Are there players hurt of that we lost that attribute to it? Frustrating lost. Maybe can come to life late but I don’t see it. Miami missing their qb yet still able to rack up points on our high level defense meanwhile our offense is once again having a bad game.

It all starts with the O line. We lost some key players there and the replacements haven't performed as well. I also think that Bangura and Allison aren't the players they were a year ago due to injuries from last season. The combination of the O line and the RBs has left us with a pretty impotent running game. It shows up on short yardage and not being able to dominate late in games. Rourke also seems to be out of sync with some of the newer receivers.

But we only lost Meservy on the O-Line? I just think they have regressed. I mean it's pretty sad when we can barely get a yard. Throw in the holding penalties and yeah, it's a mess. I'm surprised that Kurtis hasn't been sacked more this year.

We also lost the Luehrmans at tight end, who were decent blockers. I think Meservy pretty much held the line together.

Both of the Luehrmans graduated in 2021.

Every TE returned from last season.

Whatever it is, the O line just isn't dominating like it was last season. They aren't blowing defenses off the ball, especially late in games, like they did last year.

We got our butt kicked against our rivals, and at home no less. It is simple as that. I have no idea what the Bobcats do moving forward. The offense is so uninspired and the defense just looks tired of carrying the entire load week to week. While I like the progress that has been made defensively, I can't say the same for the offense. This wasn't just a loss, it was a huge yawn.

I guess they suit up and play again this week. As Scarlet O’Hara said at the end of Gone With The Wind, “tomorrow is another day”. I was happy to see Peden Stadium on TV and some shots of the campus.

Special teams are a big problem in my opinion. Can't get a kickoff into the end zone so we bloop a kick at the 35 yard line and give good starting field position to our opponent.
Blocked extra point after first touchdown.
Big punt return by Miami which led to score. Big KO returns by WMU last week that led to two scores.
Our kickoff returns are zilch since our opponents kick into end zone.
We have not has a decent punt return this entire season.

Bright spots have been our field goal kicker and our punter(s).

They’re not the same team as when we played them, not sure that would work as well.

While that's true, unfortunately, we aren't either. One team has improved, and other has regressed. Our defensive against the run was stellar early in the season, now it's still good, but not stellar. I'm not totally sure what's going on with the offense. I do think we miss Jacoby Jones.

Kudos to Kurtis and Bryce in the post game presser. Definitely stand up guys. You could tell they were seething underneath, but they completely understood why they lost the game.

After that, Albin came out with coach speak.

Just a couple of observations. First, Miami seemed to have much more speed than Ohio did. And speed kills in athletics. Second, while we looked much bigger than them, their guys appeared to be in much better shape, both on the offensive line and defensive lines. They weren’t big, but they beat us to every spot on the field. My question with this team remains, why can’t we run the ball wide any? And why can’t our receivers get open? I know we had over 300 yards passing. But Every catch seems to be with a guy right on their back.

They put a lot of pressure on Rourke. He was under duress a lot and skipped some balls just to get rid of them. I surprised he didn’t get hit or intercepted more. The intentional grounding starting the second half was a killer to me.

To me we had a lot of guys open, but coverage was good at other times.

Not sure about the speed thing, they weren’t able to get much offense going it seemed until the big run. They were much better on punt returns ( 20 yards per return-2 yards for us), although out punting your coverage or punting to the side of the field didn’t seem to help our coverage any. Kickoffs of course were all in the end zone to us and short when we kicked.

By speed, I didn’t necessarily mean just the skill players in the open on their big plays.Their big guys just seem faster than ours in general .Their defensive lineman seemed much quicker against our offensive linemen’s size.

I watched the Fiami/Toledo game in pretty great detail, here are a few musings:

-MofO's defensive front seven is VERY LEGIT. Might be the best we'll meet until the MACC, if we manage to get there.

-The Gabbert injury was pretty tragic. Not Alex Smith bad, more like Joe Theismann bad. Gabbert is a gamer...really hate to see that happen to anyone, not to mention one of the best players in the league.

-Their backup looked A LOT like CJ Harris. Bigger than Gabbert, mobile, but clearly looked less comfortable in the pocket v running play action.

How do we win (IMHO):

-Stop then run, and make their guy have to throw to beat us.

-Fiami will try to do what is driving us CRAZY right now: running the play clock down to zero before the snap and trying to shorten the game. We HAVE TO PLAY FAST...VERY FAST...and try to score ALL OF THE POINTS. Not "enough to win the game" points, but "ALL OF THE POINTS"! If we give their defense a lot of time to get set on D and take a breath, they will tee off on Rourke, and he runs an excellent risk of getting hurt again. We don't have the O Line to hold their pass rush at bay unless we are getting the ball out REALLY FAST and giving MofO no time to get settled at the line to make informed defensive play calls.

-Pass to set up the run, and when we run, we have to try to run OUTSIDE THE TACKLES more than we have, not hope that dive plays up the middle will work as a wear down strategy. I know that Kurtis is restricted due to his knee situation, but we definitely need to find ways to move outside the tackles to give a different look to their defense. Honestly, while watching the UT/MofO game, I was thinking that Navarro might just give us a better chance, considering Rourke's lack of mobility right now, but I trust that the staff can find ways to get O'Sean and Sieh out on the edges, as well as using some reverse action with our receivers.

-And if we get a lead, we can't keep running dive plays and hope to keep the clock running, playing stall ball and trying to wear their defense down. That's precisely what Toledo did on Saturday, getting super conservative with the lead, and they let Fiami sneak back in the game. This is also what Candle did against NIU, and that let NIU sneak back into the game at the end.

-Again, SCORE ALL THE EFFING POINTS!

This game is more winnable than it was, with Fiami starting their backup, but it is also very losable to a backup if we turn the ball over or give their defense an opportunity to tee off inside the tackles.

Haven't been able to watch the DVR of the game after being there in person, as I've been too bummed...but I'm just saying....

And for the record, I hate tOSU, and Ricordati and Torgerson are DB's.
