At least our DC has film on Aveon Smith so they'll know what to expect. He played ten games last year, starting nine while Gabbert was hurt. Completed about 50% of his passes for 1269 yds, 11 TDs and 5 INTs. But he also led the team in rushing with 553 yds on 123 carries and six TDs including a 73-yarder. He sounds like several QBs we've had in the past 20 years -- average passer but can hurt you with his feet. He;ll have a full week's practice with the starters, so we can expect about the as he was last year.

Ohio had nearly as many people attend their game this past Saturday (16000+) while the OSU game was on, than Miami had at their HOMECOMING...AGAINST A 1 LOSS Toledo team (17000+) 🤦‍♂️😲. Thats embarrassing.

I tried hard to think of an excuse, but yeah, this generation really doesn't seem to care about sports at Miami. No excuse: It was embarrassing.

I'd dearly love to be there but at the moment I'm recuperating from my second lung surgery since mid-August. My energy level gets low if I do too much physical activity. I do hope the student section is filled from top to bottom and side to side and the kids yell their lungs out, even though I can't. I'll still be here rooting for the team. Muck Fiami!

Hate to hear this, best wishes for a full and speedy recovery!!!

In the nicest way possible...

Eric, next time you get a question can you ask Albin why he thinks the offense absolutely sucks...? He's using 6-2 as cover, and I probably would too, but I want a moment of honesty.

They lost Bostic (major deep threat) and Jacoby (an incredible talent) - that's huge, but Wigs. Cross. All the transfers. Walton has been there since Austen Everson was on the team. And most importantly - Rourke. Bangura is back. Allison too. We're loaded top to bottom.

So what does the head coach of this football team think is the reason he went from one of the most explosive offenses in the country, with a QB that was FOURTH in the country in passing yards per attempt (10.1 yards) to 6.7 yards per attempt this season? Kurtis was the SIXTH most efficient QB in the country last season... this season... huge drop. #1 in passing yards and TD in the MAC and he missed 3 games. From 421 yards per game and 31.8 points to 350 yards and 22.5 ppg.

I think most of us agree that the proof is in the pudding, the offense is not what it was last season. I'm not saying we need to fire Scott, but we certainly need to improve. It's week 8 and they're still struggling to move the ball and he hasn't addressed it even once. The elephant in the room is just getting bigger. Every single week a dozen of us say, "they'll figure it out next week". We won. Keep stacking days. All the rah rahs. Meanwhile, Toledo is drilling people.

Perhaps TA is channeling his "inner Grobe" with all those UTM calls. Remember when we lead the nation in the fewest passes attempted for an entire season? Maybe Rourke is secretly yearning to be Kareem Wilson. Or, maybe, just maybe, we are overanalyzing this whole thing. As the season progresses, I'll bet Rourke will look more and more like the KR of old.

Um, two weeks ago, Toledo was 6-6 against last place Ball State with under 4 minutes remaining. Last week they beat Miami 21-17, and might have lost if Gabbert had not been injured. Toledo is certainly winning games, but I wouldn't say that Toledo is "drilling people". It's the MAC and anything can happen, and does.

In fairness, Rourke has has some good games, particularly BG and Kent. Yes, he was not at his best against NIU, but NIU deserves some credit, too, for having a stout defense. Take away the NIU game, and in the other three MAC games, Rourke is 58 for 87 with 771 yards, 7 TDs, and no interceptions, which is 8.9 yards/attempt. Rather than hoping that he will get back to his old self, I'm hoping that he improved as a result of his experience at NIU, and that when we look back at the end of the season, the NIU game will simply be an aberration.

Hilarious you goobers skipped right over my actual statistics, that illustrated our tremendous drop off - not just regurgitating end of game scores in two games. Not that I expected any different. Data is tough for a lot of people to understand.

Speaking of facts and statistics, Toledo is #1 in yards and points.

They're also #1 in point differential.

Finn is #1 in TD passes. #2 in rating. He's also been sacked the fewest times among starters.

They're also far and away the #1 rushing team.

They did struggle to score on the road at Ball State though. I guess that negates all other points. No reason to worry. You got me good!

Did you watch the second half of our last game? By far, really by far, we have the best MAC defense. You folks will score less than 11 points, mark my words. My prediction: We win 12 to 10. Our less-than-useful QB will do enough to bring the ball close enough for field goals. Our BEST-IN-THE-COUNTRY kicker won't miss a single one. Mark my words.

Non-conference schedules can be difficult to compare. Certainly Toledo crushed Texas Southern, but does that really matter? Thus, I focus on conference games only, where the competition is pretty balanced. Here is a link to Conference game only stats:
https://getsomemaction.com/stats.aspx?path=football&year=...

Off Points: #1 NIU 32.8, #2 Toledo 29.5, #3 Ohio 28.3, #4 WMU 27.8
Off Yards: #1 Toledo 433, #2 NIU 402, #3 WMU 383, #4 Ohio 377
Def Points: #1 Miami 11.3, #2 Buffalo 13.3, #3 Ohio 16, [#6 Toledo 21.8]
Def Yards: #1 Miami 241. #2 Buffalo 268, #3 Ohio 276, [#8 Toledo 337]
Pass TDs: #1 Rourke (7), #2 Finn (6), #3 (tie) Lombardi, Gabbert 5
Pass efficiency: #1 Finn 148.1, #2 Lombardi 147.3, #3 Rourke 142.5

I would say NIU has the best offense, followed by Toledo, then Ohio, then WMU, I would say that Miami has the best defense, followed by Buffalo, then Ohio.

Here are the average scores, and winning margin for the top 5 teams in the MAC:
NIU: 32.8-18.8, average margin +14 points
Miami: 25.3-11.3, average margin +14 points
Ohio: 28.3-16, average margin +12.3 points
Buffalo: 22-13.3, average margin +8.7 points
Toledo: 29.5-21.8, average margin +7.7 points

Since the season is only half over, not all teams have played an equal schedule. Here is the combined MAC records of the MAC opponents each team has faced:
NIU Opponents are 9-7 in MAC
Toledo Opponents are 8-8 in MAC
Miami Opponents are 7-9 in MAC
Ohio Opponents are 6-10 in MAC
Buffalo Opponents are 4-12 in MAC

Looking at the data, and comparing the foes, it's clear that no team is totally dominant. Yes, Toledo is doing the one thing that counts, and that is winning all their games, but they definitely are not "drilling people", unless you want to count their 49-31 game against WMU as "drilling" them.

I love it. Nice to know there is at least a couple out there that still hate us and are passionate about our matchups. Every time (and I mean EVERY time) I meet a Miami grad, they are completely oblivious and I can't even begin to banter with them.

7 points seems like a lot. I like us to win but could easily see it being a 1 possession game. I know the Gabbert injury shifted things but still.

Toledo was absolutely dominate over that Juggernaut Texas Southern! I am not sure how such a powerhouse isn't in the conversation for the Big10 Title.

Take out the 71-3 beating of the powerhouse, and let me know where they rate in point differential.

Look at MAC play, in MAC play Toledo is a _+30 IN POINT DIFFERENTIAL OHIO is +49!!!! That is Apples to Apples, not the BS non-league games. We probably better hope we lose more, so Toledo does not embarass us in Detroit.

From 2006 on, Ohio is 13-3 against Miami. Perhaps most remarkable is those 3 losses were by a combined 8 points.

My defensive ratings. It solves an equation on 266 variables in 266 unknowns. Rating the offenses purely based of how they do relative to the defensive ratings that they face which are rated purely how they did relative to the offensive ratings going to infinity essentially until it converges. This is how many points better that the FBS average. Miami and Ohio benefit her because how many points you are expected to give up is not just related to how well you play but also your pace of play. The same goes for the offense which is why Ohio and Miami are in the middle of the pack.

Ohio 7.913268628
Miami (OH) 5.51784137
Eastern Michigan 2.036443249
Toledo 0.197088958
Bowling Green -1.082904576
Northern Illinois -3.801517517
Ball State -4.502578819
Buffalo -5.402327462
Akron -6.273556201
Central Michigan -6.380245567
Kent State -10.78694865
Western Michigan -15.14077658

Massey defensive ratings
Ohio 27.47
Miami OH 25.92
Toledo 25.88
E Michigan 24.11
N Illinois 22.82
Ball St 22.27
C Michigan 21.4
Buffalo 21.25
Bowling Green 20.93
W Michigan 19.49
Kent 18.8
Akron 17.17

In SP+ Miami is 52nd at 25.5 and Ohio 53rd at 25.4.

I think the claim that Miami is by far the better defense is pretty dubious. I mean, you can try to get past the number and say did you not see last week but you can counter did you not see OUr ISU game. The computers take into account all games which is my they are what they are.
