Here's the complete head-on-head results versus other MAC schools for this year:
2014        Chose Ohio      Chose Oth School
v. Akron        5                  0
v. Buffalo      3                  0
v. EMU          2                  0
v. Ball St      2                  0
v. Kent         6                  1
v. WMU          4                  1
v. Toledo       4                  3
v. Miami        1                  1
v. BG           4                  5
v. CMU          0                  1
Total          31                 12

This is the number of schools that had offers from both schools, and chose one or the other. It excludes players that are undecided, or who chose some other school. I don't have results for most prior years, but here are the 2009 results (this is the class that were 5 year Seniors this year):

2009        Chose Ohio      Chose Oth School
v. Akron        1                  2
v. Buffalo      3                  0
v. EMU          4                  0
v. Ball St      0                  3
v. Kent         0                  1
v. WMU          0                  2
v. Toledo       0                  3
v. Miami        2                  5
v. BG           1                  3
v. CMU          0                  1
v. NIU          0                  1
v. Temple       0                  1
Total          11                 22

Is that the rule? Sebastian Smith broke his leg during camp 2 summers ago, but it was before classes started and he never formally enrolled. The word was when he showed up last summer he was still a true freshman and didn't need to burn his redshirt since he never enrolled. He did end up playing last year, so maybe they found out otherwise and figured that if his shirt was gone he might as well see some playing time.

I agree LC that improvement has been made. One question though, for the 2013 numbers, how many players are we actually talking about? Are 5 or 6 players responsible for those numbers?

Also, the fact that in 2009 we could only out-recruit EMU should not be a point of pride. That means 5 years into the Solich era we were one of the worst teams in the country in recruiting. Not great.

The one thing that I think Paul misses is that I think they expect and plan for this, so it isn't really "a failure", it is an intentional thing. Say they have 24 available scholarships, and they have a couple they would like to award to walkons. They take 24 verbals, knowing a couple won't qualify, and then give those 2 to the walkons, then hope to get the non-qualifiers back later as a Juco. The alternative would be to just give 22, and skip the non-qualifiers. The way they are doing it isn't the only way it can be done, but it is pretty common, I think.

Mike Rogers, right? From Cleveland?

2011 is the one year we really gambled and we're still chasing these guys (like Murray). And its unfortunate that we did gamble, given that we had just finished an incredibly successful season with our best team in the Solich Era. We shouldn't have needed to take chances...we should have cleaned up.

Yeah...why gamble on the top 3 guys of that class...I wouldn't gamble on a 6'6-240 pound TE who is really a WR or a 365 lb. DT or a WR who has been compared to LaVon Brazil..nah.... I don't like the 3 star guys who look like 4 star guys...let's just stick with 2and 3 star guys....Roberts is the only one we lost....no idea how he became a Rocket.....don't forget my friends.....fortune favors the brave.

Basically 11 different players account for the 2014 numbers, each of whom had about 3 other MAC offers, on average.  Duckworth had the most, with 6 other MAC offers. As for a "Mike Rogers", Doc's post above enlightened me - I bet you mean Mike Roberts. I went back and added him to my list as one that never showed up, as I had forgotten him.

I would agree that Ohio's recruiting has been a long, slow climb. Up until 2010 the recruits had, on average, only one other FBS offer. Once Haines took over in 2011 there was an immediate jump to about 3 competing offers. The number of "3-star players" also jumped at that time. Over the next couple years we will see those jumps translate into improved performance on the field. The redshirt Sophomores last year were from the 2011 class.

As for why it took that long for the classes to jump, I don't know, but the current classes definitely seem to be better than the ones a few years back.

That's because he didn't switch schools. Because he was scheduled for classes at BG (but classes didn't start) and he participated in camp, he cannot transfer without penalty. To me it's crazy because it's not like he's going to walk in and dominate the conference, but it's the NCAA

Correct. It really doesn't even have to be one day of camp. As soon as he signs that LOI and sets foot on campus, his 5 year clock starts. He really didn't even have to participate in any drills and he still would have had to take a penalty year. The NCAA rulebook is a fascinating piece of literature for anyone who dares to read it.

He's not listed as a BG recruit, though. Did he sign a LOI? Or, was he a walkon?

lol fascinating is one way to put it! I find it annoying and full of ridiculousness, but then again it must be comprehensive and all encompassing lol.

based on all the youtube videos of his footwork and his highlights it looks like the redshirt year will be good for him to just get indoctrinated to the OU offense and just work on strength, then he should be able to develop from there within that 4 year framework on the field.

Unfortunately, that's a common name. There are two students enrolled at Ohio University with that name. But there is one on Twitter who says he plays football at goes to OU.

If this is the correct Cameron Wilson, he was 3 stars, 5.7 from Rivals in 2012, 3 stars #56 Receiver from Scout, 3 stars 79 from ESPN, and 3 stars 86 from 247Sports. He did leave Iowa on July 23, 2013, so last fall would have been his year to sit out, meaning he indeed would be eligible to play this fall, and he will have 3 to play 3.

Oops, sorry, that was the wrong hudl page. My other links were right, though. Here is the correct Hudl page. The other guy was about he same size, and also played WR, so I didn't check the school.
