Channeling my inner Cleveland sports fan here...it's a season of terrible breaks where the ball never bounces our way, especially on the road. However I'm going to be excited when they prove me wrong!

Another loss to Toledo and another bowl win.

Of course with this prediction I have more chances to be wrong on win predictions than to be wrong on the loss predictions so I'd be very heavy on the under if I had to bet an O/U of 9 wins on the regular season.

Yeah, I remember that almost happened once, I think 2016, when the East was on the line and we squeaked out an excruciating 9-3 win over Akron.

Yeah, OUr record against CMU is an absolute mystery. We are 5 27 2 all-time versus them and it seems like every year that CMU is terrible and would be an easy win, like last year, they are not on Ohio's schedule. CMU is back so they must be a MAC West contender...hahaha

I used to use the "TeamRankings" website for projections as to the odds of each team winning the conference, and they seem to have been absorbed by ESPN. Here's a link to the current numbers:
https://www.espn.com/college-football/fpi/_/group/15

Ohio is currently projected to win 8.3 games, and has a 95.7% chance of becoming bowl eligible. The current odds of each team winning the MACC are:
Toledo 44.5%
Miami 22.5%
Ohio 12.8%
Anyone else 20.2%

I got off to a pathetic start. I expected that three of the first fourth games we would likely be a miniscule underdog and was at least right about that. I still think ISU is the best of those three teams, and that might not be their last 10-7 game, but we had them at home and had about as good a shot as the other two. I thought, if anything SDSU was the worst of SDSU, Ohio, FAU, and ISU, and I still think that now. Maybe I'm just hard headed on that but if our offense finds last years form with almost exactly the same personnel we are going to be lamenting that loss and wishing that we knew why Rourke couldn't finish.

Theyre not losing another game this year. Under Frank Solich this teams ceiling was mediocrity. He got Ohio a grand total of zero MAC championships and was in love with 7-8 win seasons.

Im (hoping) that this coach is different and i think he is and has the talent this year to go 11-1 and 13-1 (assuming Ohio does not get into a new years six bowl) which i doubt they will with the one loss.

Times are (hopefully) changing and the state of mediocrity that Solich ultimately lead Ohio to is over.

Some unrealized potential and expectations will dot his history, no doubt, but Frank won 9 games 5 times, and 10 games once. In general he won more than he lost and I would say far more games were against teams with more resources and tradition than those with less.

I think if Albin stays, he'll beat those numbers but you never know. We have two quarterbacks who have led us to 10 wins in recent history and both were recruited by Solich. Who's the next championship caliber QB? It starts there. Is he already on the roster?

Of course if we ever figure out how to play offense in Detroit (don't get me started), Katie bar the door!

Zero MAC titles. Frank Solichs ceiling was mediocrity. Great coaches win championships. Sorry to say he didnt get the job done.

Certainly you are allowed to define your adjectives any way you choose. I'm curious, though, what adjectives you use to describe the various coaches between Don Peden and Solich?

WOW. 20 percent of your posts are from today. If not for Frank Solich we may still be 2-9, 1-10 or some other mediocre record. Frank was not "mediocrity", although your posts are.

There is no reason to be harsh with him. I'm guessing that he's a younger fan, possibly one that grew up supporting some other team. Defining "mediocrity" is all about the context. If you grew up supporting a team that wins 70% of it's games, and wins a championship every other year, then winning 55% of games may seem pretty mediocre. If you grew up following a team that often won 20% of it's games, then winning 55% is a significant improvement.

The fact is that in 2005, the fans of most other MAC teams considered Bobcat footall to be a joke, and they thought it was an absurd joke that Ohio fans thought they had any hope of ever winning the East. The fact that, for example, this year, BG fans were saying that "to win the MAC East, you have to beat Ohio" shows that the landscape is now very different. Other MAC coaches have said that their goal was to make their programs as competitive every year as Ohio.

Could Solich have done even better than he did? Yes. Is Solich the greatest coach that ever lived? No. But, he was a very solid coach, who very successfully built Ohio into a position where it is competitive every year. Do we hope that Albin can take the program even further, and win some MAC Championships? Absolutely. Do we hope that the next 10 Ohio coaches also win championships, so that we have a different context, one where we can declare Solich "mediocre"? Absolutely. Is it also possible that Ohio football descends back into the abyss, and returns to what it was in the 80's and 90's, making Solich the greatest coach in the last 50 years? That's also possible, but no one wants that.

The bottom line is that, when some new fan appears and declares Solich to be "mediocre", consider the context, and remember that he probably grew up following some other team, and welcome him as a new addition to the Bobcat family. Hopefully Ohio will continue to attract more new fans in the future, and that expansion to 60,000 seats will be needed before long. ;)
