Made the drive over to Oxford last night. Very pleased with how the team regrouped after that terrible first half. A few observations:

The wife and I initially wanted to have dinner and a drink in Oxford before the game. After doing some research, found that Oxford has zero breweries (I'm a beer nerd and always like to try the local brew). Sharp contrast to Athens which has three, two of which are among the best in the state, one of those is nationally recognized.

Millett Hall. Where to start. I've been there several times before, but I was particularly struck this time about what an awful place it is. Maybe 1300 in attendance against their arch rival on Senior Night. Small handful of students. My wife is a relatively new sports fan - she remarked several times how much she prefers the atmosphere in the Convo. Understand that our attendance is down, but not like that. The cherry on top was that my Swine City Lager was completely skunked (and I know that they make good lagers).

In all honesty, I can't understand why they have such difficulty generating fan support there. Residential campus, so the students are there. They have a good history of success in their programs, cradle of coaches and all that BS, good alumni base. It's been a mystery to me for a while.

Good Bobcat win - the season sweep makes it sweeter. I did enjoy the Charlie Coles tribute. Time for a tourney run. Hope that Miles' injury is not as severe as was mentioned here.

Millett Hall: As my Dad used to say....."Just Win Baby, Win, and they will show up." (talking about fans, and support)
Miami has not been the historical winning program that I was fortunate enough to see back in the days of the true, Miami and Ohio rivalry. The first game in Millett was versus Adolph Rupp and his Kentucky Wildcats along with either 11,000 or 12,000 loud crowd. Miami played Kentucky 3 times in less than 2 years.
The opener in Millett, then in the NCAA fight for the sweet 16 in the mid-east regional, then a return game at Kentucky in their old but awesome Memorial Field House.
Historically, Miami had home and home series with Dayton, University of Cincinnati, and Xavier. These games were rivals that were right up there or more intense than the MAC competition with Ohio. The program has struggled for the past 15 years as they have gone through 3 or 4 coaching changes. From the looks and sounds comming from the first recruiting class of Coach Steele, the program may very well be heading in the right direction. Time will tell, and we will see if my Dad was correct with his "Just Win".

I was in Oxford on Dec. 15 to see somebody graduate and found it to be a total zero. A real bummer. Couldn't find a single local coffee place, ended up going to a Starbucks (how unique and original). Afterwards, there was nowhere suitable for the group to go eat in what they unoriginally call "uptown" so we hiked around until finding some Hawaiian fusion-ish place in what looked like an alley-ish back street and overpaid but got to eat. Then I got to leave Oxford. Thankfully.

In Dec/Jan, I�d agree. However, this team is playing with a little bit of an it factor over the last 11 conference games. My guess we don't hear anything about Miles and he dresses to at least give WMU something to think about. It just sucks for him to potentially be a non-factor two years in a row in the MAC tournament. 5th-year senior guards don't grow on trees and he's playing some of the best hoops of his career.

Does anyone actually dislike our away jerseys? I think they're excellent. Great shade of green and the arched Ohio logo. No reason to ever change them.

Now that said, our alternate away unis this year are odd... I can't even tell what color they are.

The road is fine. It's the home that are awful.....both uniforms should have OHIO across the chest for national branding purposes. There are other colleges with the Bobcats nickname, but there is only one OHIO. My other complaint is Clayton's jersey looks like they got it at the Baby Gap store.

SPent some time with Mrs Coles at half (who recounted her story of shooing Mrs Cooper out of her seats to Charlie's grandkids). She said to make sure I told Grunk hello next time I see him up at Maine. Pleasant...though she said "you know Charlie hated seeing Green" which made me laugh remembering his stories going clear back to his playing days seeing the Bobcats.

It was a really good night in Millett and with the Bobcats who pre gamed in the basement of a dive bar in an alley off the main street. Bobcat crappy half with a man-sized rally to beat "your Arch..... Rival" in their house. Getup....GET Up....GET UPPPPP! It's March....let'ssssss GOOOOOOOOOO!

Absolutely. If they want to have Bobcats on the chest they ought at least have OHIO on the pants the way the women do. But, OHIO across the chest is preferred and has always been the case until recently in my memory.

My fiance went to Miami (but attends every OU game wearing the appropriate colors) and we often go to the road Miami hoops and football games. Every time we go she constantly complains about how bad the arena is. Dark, no fans, honoring Charlie Coles with more OU fans cheering for him than Miami fans.. just a black eye on the MAC. Glad we took care of business against our little brother. Time to win the tournament!

bornacatfan....Great to hear from you on the Bobcats vs Miami, from someone who knows what he is talking about! I am with you on your thoughts about Kentucky, and the old Field House with "The Baron" on the sideline. Three of the most exciting evenings ever playing this great game.

Halfway into Miami's game thread, they start debating the Millett Hall experience. Good discussion towards seating arrangements, promotions, student sections, etc.

I especially like the call out that having half a dozen inflatables on the concourse is just begging for any warm body to come through. My family came in about an hour early because I wanted to snag those general admission seats right by the visiting team tunnel. My son and I have had those the past two years. This was my son's dozenth (dozenth?) or so college hoops game, but my five year old daughter's first, so it was good to have those to pass the time, but they did wear her out some.

In the second half, they ran a promotion where you scan a QR code off the video board, agree to receive some sponsor emails, and then you can redeem a prize (a deck of Miami playing cards) at the marketing table which is right by the visiting team tunnel. So you end up with a mass of humanity flocking to this area, obstructing traffic and sight lines, during the live ball. That's an odd one.

Is it me or does Miami change their seating chart, tarps, and curtains every year? They can't settle on an arrangement they like? Those rec center bleachers they have on the baseline serving as the "student section" couldn't look any cheaper. I've heard they cannot move their scoreboard location and therefore wouldn't move the court closer to the closed end of the horseshoe, so if I were in charge at Miami, here's what I would do:

-Temporary bleachers at least 15 rows tall at both baselines for students. Get dueling student sections like you have at Kent and CMU. Route all students there first. If you happen to have games with a bigger student turnout, keep a section or two close to the baselines or in the upper deck reserved for student overflow.
-Tarp off the lower bowl seats in the closed horseshoe that are obstructed by the student bleachers.
-Keep two or three sections on each sideline as reserved seating but whatever is left in the lower bowl and the entire upper bowl sideline are general admission.
-Tarp or curtain off the upper bowl end zone, but in the event of a larger crowd based on early ticket sales, these could be opened up as the last bit of general admission seats.

Nice look back.

Bottom line...the road and home jerseys should have OHIO across the chest....not Bobcats. When OHIO is on TV...you don't see the score graphic saying: Bobcats 76 Broncos 61......it's Ohio 76 Western Michigan 61.

It's all about branding.

Hard agree. Bobcats might be fine in some sort of alternate like Russell used to do for us, but like someone else said - theres only one OHIO.

IMO there hasn't been a year where I liked both the home and away uniforms.

I love the white uniforms from 05-07 and the near identical version from the Preston years. But the plainness of the former was amplified on the green jerseys. And the black numbers on the Preston greens looked too much like a women's basketball jersey. The black jerseys from the Preston years were pretty good.
