I didn't know either of these two but found it interesting that about 7 paragraphs into the article, Whitlock explains how the two competed against one another in the 1988 MAC Championship. The article is about how in the author's opinion, Twitter is anti-Christian. You can post that Dogs are Cool, and a thousand people will disagree. It, along with Facebook, has ruined our discourse. But it's done so not because it's representative of a mob, or anything like that. It's done so because we've all decided to insist it is a reflection of the world. It's not real life. Jason Whitlock says it himself. Terry Crews got "thousands of tweets" that were angry with him. There are 328 million people in the United States. It's a conscious choice to empower the voice of a vocal minority when one could just as easily ignore them. Instead, everybody insists the voices of a few reflect the voices of huge segments of the country. People trying to explain random thoughts in 280 characters. It's the electronic version of "Deep Thoughts" that Jack Handey used to do on SNL. Politicians use it for sound bites or to deflect attention from issues that really matter. It's mainly a vehicle to show how stupid people are. Tweets are for twits. We will get by. We will get by. In the past the news and quotes were filtered through the very small outlets of television, radio, newspapers and magazines. Now it is chaos. You could always deny and say you were misquoted when you said something stupid. Not any more. It’s right from your pie hole to the world. We were not meant to hear every little opinion by everyone. Of course it’s a problem, but this is where we are. You get to pick who you follow on the damn site. Pick thoughtful people and don’t be a jackass in your own posts, use your mute button and it’s a nice experience. Facebook is the sewer, because you’re stuck interacting with family members you can’t block without creating problems in real life. Twitter can be a visit to a cool bar if used correctly. Facebook is Thanksgiving with the anti-vaxxer aunt you’re stuck sitting beside at the table.
