I'm sorry, I can no longer sit idly by and have one voice represent Illini Nation on this board.

In reference to Illinoisfan - please stop.  Are you really lobbying for a high school coach over Groce?  First off, you are welcoming all kinds of NCAA vigilance if the #1 recruit in the nation follows his high school coach to Illinois.  Yes, this has happened before, but when's the last time a coach was dumb enough to say "if I go (he) will follow me there"?

Also, I'm tired of hearing that Groce is too unfamiliar with Chicago to recruit there.  Aside from who he has gotten from Chicago to commit to OSU and OU, he has a personality that is perfect for recruiting that environment.  He may not have existing ties right now, but give it time, and he will succeed.

To all you Ohio fans, I can certainly understand the frustration.  Groce seems like a fantastic hire.  He may have not been our top choice, but can anyone really blame us for going after Stevens and Smart?  I really hope Illinois gets this deal done.  I commend all you Bobcats for wanting to keep the guy around.

Smith coaches and creates the best players in the country. He flat out knows how to coach, and obviously recruit. He's won many state titles, and puts together one of the best teams in the nation year after year.

He gives us access to Chicago's best players, something we haven't had since...ever.

Another main concern with Groce is many coaches in the CPL have expressed they don't want him hired since he is not active in Chicago recruiting and they don't know him.

Many Illinois fans will disagree with me though.  I happen to think it's the best choice though.

So what? Illinois doesn't need the like the CPL thinks it does. They act like Champaign owes them something. And you're probably better off not stepping into that cesspool.

Also, Groce can and has recruited Chicago.

Also, high school ball and college ball are VERY different.

Thanks for the post. Definitely don't blame you for going after Stevens and Smart, wish you could've overlooked Groce for our program's sake - but the guy deserves the opportunity that you all are trying to give him. I have no doubt he'll be successful at Illinois if you all bring him in.

Again, thanks for joining up.

So are you talking about your frustration about Bill Self leaving or about having to fire your National Championship (uhhh, losing, my bad) coach? You should instead commend Groce for still giving you guys a chance even with all the people in your camp that seems to be against him.

Oh wait, you guys can spend enough money to make it all worth it.

Still think you understand our frustration?

If you read any of my posts you'd see i've said ''this is my opinion, many other Illini fans will disagree so that's that.''

Also, yes, Smith over Groce, but that's an argument for our board not this one, so lets take it there.

Maybe Simeon's coach, he runs the show in the CPL, and has the nations #1 recruit in Parker on his HS team, and a native Illinoisan.  He is the best candidate in my mind, he's won a lot of state titles as well.

Sounds an awful lot like Bob Wade.

Haha i've added quite a few posts to this thread, 32 including this...how much time I have on my hands.

Hopefully more Illini fans will represent their views on it, becuase there are quite a few who do like Groce and are glad to possibly have him.

It will probably be 30 pages by tonight anyway, haha.

Yes, actually of all of the BCS schools, I would say Illinois is one of the more empathetic when it comes to having a fantastic coach leave - Bill Self.  Clearly we have the resources rebuild, but successful mid-majors, like Ohio, have their own unique situation they can benefit from.  *If* you guys were to get a new head coach, he can at least tell recruits that Ohio is building a successful program that has a great chance of playing in the NCAAs every year.  You're not quite there yet, but you've built a pretty successful brand.  Memphis and Gonzaga are the epitome of this example.  All Pastner and Few have to do are tell kids "don't got to the BCS program, come here, make a name for yourself, and you have a really good chance of dancing at the end of the year."  Ohio has talent in place.  This was the big thing Bruce Weber failed on when he first came to Illinois - he never leveraged his current program to entice young talent.

Also, please don't generalize "us" with the Chicago media and message board loud-mouths.  According to a poll this morning, 57% of our fans approved of the hire of Groce.  The only reason that number is even that low is because people haven't done their homework, or they're still upset about Shaka/Stevens.

Oh, and we didn't fire a "National Championship winning" coach.

I've got a suspicion that they already agreed on the money yesterday but that some other things got in the way, like possibly assistant coaches.

I don't. I think the longer this takes, the more to OUr benefit.

I hope Groce is out taking a walk with the family on the bike path or at Sells Park this beautiful evening, perhaps having dinner at LuiLui or Abrio's, and seeing and talking to lots of the nice people they know here in Athens.

I find it rather humorous that Illinoisfan is debating how good a coach John Groce is, with people who have followed his whole time here. He wasn't given a great situation - the players have improved, his recruiting has improved and, most of all, his coaching has improved. He has done an amazing job.

Hate to see the guy go to school where only half the fans will give him a fair shake.

I know, saying something about a high school coach who I know very little about and talking him down like Illinoisfan is of Groce could be hypercritical - but is he really serious???

As an Illinois alum, I have been following this hiring process with interest. Too many Illini fans are interested in how the sausage is made rather than enjoying the meal.

There is much pent-up frustration on among Illini boards, deserved or not. I think your coach has an excellent basketball spirit about him, and I think that the U. of I. fans should be thankful that our AD has had the wisdom to pursue your coach to head our program.

I only wish both OU and U of I the best, and I only wish that posters supporting the basketball team of my alma mater can gain a bit of perspective and support the team.

Good luck to both of us next season!

And, don't forget he was Lebron James' high school coach.  The most successful coach in the MAC in terms of regular season wins.  He's go that Chicago-style "tough guy" look.  The guys got quite a pedigree.  You should be investigating this further.  I think Athena would agree with me on this one.  As would Monroe.  Please tweet this back to Champaign-Urbana.

Of course, given the reasons certain members of the Illinois BOT apparently don't want Groce, Dambrot's, um, "baggage" may be an obstacle to his getting the job.

But I agree, Illinois should take Dambrot!
