Groce Watch Day Two:

Someone check the charter jet schedule from Champaign to Athens.  I will review all Megabus manifests.  It may also be a good idea to place a BA rep. at all highway weigh stations between Athens and Champaign.  Let's get to work.

IF the general tenor of everything we're reading is true (and I know, that's a big IF), it seems clear Groce has made his mind up to leave. Great-he deserves the promotion and the extra money. But there's no way IMHO he can come back to Ohio now. If negotiations hit a snag with Illinois, they fall through and he ends up coming back to Ohio, what's he going to tell potential recruits in this upcoming recruiting season? "Hey kids, I wasn't really going to leave Ohio, it was all just a joke." Every potential recruit will know he was on his way out of here and if they don't the opposing coaches in the MAC will be sure to tell every recruit out there in the coming months Groce was out of here. Groce will have no credibility for potential Ohio recruits I would think.

Well, you know, recruits are suckers.  How else can one explain Akron having a good basketball program?

This is probably the best time for the program for him to leave.  Better than next year for sure.  Just due to the makeup of our roster right now.

The next coach should camp out at Evan Bradds and Caris Lavert's homes.....

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

It just depends. It's not like Ohio is hard to sell, even with a wavering coach.

Great arena, great campus, the best fan support in the MAC, recent NCAA success, etc., etc.

The life of a good mid major school is having constant speculation regarding your coach, It just is what it is.

Will it deter some guys? Sure. Will it deter everyone? I don't think so. At smaller programs, it is not uncommon to play for more than one coach.

There's probably a good argument for bringing in "the new guy" this year instead of next but I don't think it is to the point where you move on. Now if Groce has the Illinois job fall through and immediately jumps to interviewing for Kansas State, then sure, tell the guy thanks and move on.

My high school basketball coach had an old saying.....There are two things that don't last: Dogs that chase cars and teams that don't make free-throws.

You're so often correct on matters like this, and you obviously have a lot more direct experience than most of us, but I just don't think this is the way most recruits think. I'm sure a certain former recruit that you know best was smart enough to realize this, but do you really think that's how most recruits choose a school? It seems like most players look for systems and situations that they feel provide them with the best opportunity to play and succeed. Coaches, not schools, are the primary drivers of systems and situations.

"ALL recruits know they will not be playing for the same coach when they leave....that is why you sign with a school and not a coach."

Bornacat, I agree with you-the situation I'm envisioning is one where Groce accepts the Illinois job, things fall through for whatever reason and he's left with coming back to Ohio, sort of like a tail-between-his-legs situation. You're right-recruits have a good idea that the coach sitting in front of them in their living room might not be at the school in 4 years; it's probably a different situation when the coach is recruiting for a school where everyone knows he had actually tried to leave from but ultimately came back to. That can't be optimal in the recruiting wars.

Can we pump the brakes on the "Groce just needs to take the job!" talk? It's been a day and they're not obsessing over this like we are. Decisions of this nature are not to be taken lightly. And, again, it's been a day.

Plus, LOLinois hasn't even offered him the job yet. Or they have and rescinded it. Or they're JUST about to. Who can tell?

I guess I don't see the issue.   I think recruiting for next season should be pretty much done anyway and he still has everyone back from the Sweet Sixteen team.  I think few Ohio people expect Groce to stay beyond next season anyway if this team fully returns and produces as it can.  Additionally, Shaka Smart and Brad Stevens kicked the Illinois tires and took a look...I don't think anyone is questioning them returning to their jobs saying "Hey, I talked with Illinois, but it wasn't for me.  I preferred to come back to lead my guys here next season."

I haven't seen any Groce quotes regarding this debacle anyway..it's all been in Illinois.  It's not like he's out there throwing around "I can't wait to get out of Ohio and cash in my chips."

True

the Butler SYSTEM is what kept recruits. THis is not Calipari vs Gillespie who had different systems....and we are not bringing in a TOS who really did not run a system and recruited "best available Player" rather than players to a system.

That is why I am envisioning coaches who are similar and understand what is in place and what recruits are in place. THe groundwork is laid and OHIO is on the map. THis fanbase needs to chill and ask great questions but not back recruits into a corner and assume they know how those 18 year olds think....I been around them for 25 years from the 80's on and I have no idea from one to the next. Recruiting has changed in that time from in home visits only to AAU tourneys and a myriad of other ways....the only thing that has not is a kids expectation of PT and will to be with a winner....when Swank put up here a post intimating that TOmmy would transfer I laughed....based on that post I had many folks ask about him leaving....my answer "he loves Athens, you could not drag him out of there with wild horses.." Like I said the fanbase can do more damage than what actually transpires....

Unless you are a one and done recruit you are playing for a school. THe transfer list Jeff GOodman puts out each year is growing larger because of many factors ....I have NEVER seen anyone transfer FROM Butler. (GOnzaga and St Marys keep their coaches in place and X just recruits over them and ships them out....would hate to be a recruit at X).. At this level the AD has to put a coach in place that will propogate the success.....I am confident if JG is back or gone the result will be the same and if he does stay following this he will do everything possible to ensure that when he does leave there is a plan. I said it before and I will continue to beat the drum....this program is read y to ascend to the next level.... we need to do it with humility and with out the fanbase losing their collective minds.....

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Doubt there will be any official news today (i can go back to work)... they are having a press conference for the women's head coach at noon. I don't think they they would want to overshadow that announcement with naming a men's coach on the same day.

But then again, the way the PR team has handled this for Illinois, anything is possible.

It sounds almost as if the "its better for us if he doesn't come back" crowd thinks he's been out there bemoaning OHIO, talking about how he can't wait to get away and what a crappy podunk mountain town it is, putting his resume out on craigslist, etc. Fact of the matter is, this is all based on speculation at this point. None of us knows what JG has said to Illinois, or vice a versa. Maybe it was true, but about 65% of the stories out there yesterday seemed to use @siggysports as their primary/sole source, a guy with 4 previous tweets who may infact be a front for Mr. Boa.

We don't know what JG's interest level is, we know what various Chicago area media sources and Illini leaks purport his interest to be. We don't know what Illinois's interest level is, we know what Chicago are media and illini leaks purport it to be. We don't know whats been offered, how much money we're hoping he's mulling over declining, or even what OHIO's counter offer is. Heck, we don't even know where Coach has been the past 3 days. At one point we all thought that he'd been flown to Urbana on Monday from Port Columbus, but then some reports came out yesterday saying that there was a plane on the way to Athens to pick him up...or to drop him off...or to pick up his family.

All we know about this situation is coming from unofficial, unnamed, possibly non-existent Illinois sources. The same sources who told us that Shaka had "solid interest" in the Illini job (http://wtvr.com/2012/03/20/report-shaka-smart-shows-interest-in-illinois-coaching-job/) less than 24 hours  before he rejected it. Then Brad Stevens was a done deal, except he didn't want the job either. Maybe JG wants the Big10 gig, maybe he's seeing how much OHIO wants him, maybe he and his family are on a camping trip in west virginia and he's going to be shocked when his phone blows up from all the missed calls/voicemails/texts when he gets back to athens. Chill out, lets not run the man out of town on a rail! Remember 5 days ago when we were playing in the sweet 16? Lets give him a little benefit of the doubt here.
