First of all, kudos to Groce for having the kids ready to play.  Secondly, kudos to the Marietta faithful for putting so many fans in the seats.  While I'm happy that we took the game seriously and spanked them part of me would have liked to see a closer game so the crowd could have gotten into it.   But the blow out did serve a purpose. It enabled our bench to get some very valuable minutes and Groce a chance to do a lot of teaching.

As for the game, I'm still glad we did it.   As to whether this was worth traveling to see, apparently a lot of people thought it was worth it.  I don't think we'd want to do it every year because I think it would lose it's intrigue but every 3 years or so would be a good thing.

Before the game, I predicted there would be 4000 present, so golf clap for everyone who made it to the game. I also don't think it's a bad idea to consider playing AT Marietta for an exhibition game.

I know alot of Pioneer fans we're really impressed with the Bobcats, so time will tell if they buy in to the program. But last night was a good promo to gain new fans, Glad the game happen.

I agree, Gman, that this is an important factor.  I can remember back in the Golden Era of the late 1960s we regularly attracted fans from Marietta for Ohio games.  I have a distinct recollection of talking to a group of Marietta folks who said they tried to make it to Athens for every weekend game and some weekday games.  My impression recently is that we have far fewer of these fans from other areas of SEO who attend our games regularly.  If last night helps a little in increasing interest in our games from the regional citizenry I think it was well worth it.  Now, I'm waiting for a B1G team in the Convo in the near future.  It's a matter of balance.

Edit: For what it's worth, I agree that Marietta had a few more fans in the Convo than we did -- especially if you count the cheerleaders, JV cheerleaders and reserve JV cheerleaders who were constantly walking up and down the aisle beside me to replace the current group on the court.  I was expecting at any moment for an official to blow his whistle for an illegal cheerleader substitution penalty!   Seriously, I did think there were more Marietta fans, but they didn't have much to cheer about so the Ohio fans were louder most of the time.  So if you judged by your "ears" you might conclude that there were more Ohio fans, but if you used your eyeballs it was clear that Marietta won the butts in the seat battle.  There were also some fans there with ties to both schools who wore Marietta colors as kind of an underdog statement.

This is going to create a lot of hand wringing in the "We are better than that crowd" but I agree.  I can't think of a legitimate reason we shouldn't.  I imagine the crowd would be rabid and that would be good practice for down the road in MAC play.  Our exhibition games don't exactly create a big buzz in Athens, particularly is they are the second one of the year.

This basketball game for Marietta was the equivalent of OHIO playing football up at the shoe. It was their superbowl. If we played them every year at home I don't know if they would travel as well. I would be comfortable rotating this game between Marietta, Shawnee State and Rio Grande. A local team better draw on the home schedule than a 250+ RPI MEAC or Southland Conference program.

I'm in Florida, but feel pretty strongly that I would NOT have made the drive down last night had I been in town.

I love Ohio Basketball as much (if not more) than anyone, but 1.5 hours each way (I heard it was drizzling) to watch OU scrimmage a D-III team on a Wed night just doesn't make much sense to me. I'm not sure how it could make sense to anyone, but then again, the expectations around here are generally pretty low.

The framework of our NCAA competition are the 342 schools in 32 Division 1 basketball conferences. Scheduling/RPI rules aside, I'll come to games where we operate within the framework of our competition. If we can't find a compelling matchup with 341 other schools outside of Marietta, Ohio to choose from - that's an US problem.

I found Morgan / ASU / Lamar compelling and I showed up. Marietta - Pass.

Edit: Probably going to agree with G-man here. If he says we were outnumbered, I'll go with it. Again, why would anyone from Columbus / Cincy / Cleveland / Dayton go well out of their way to watch a far inferior team from Marietta, Ohio? It's past ridiculous. If Groce and the staff want to bring Marietta fans into the fold, um, keep going with this one. If they want to keep donors and potential donors from the metropolitan areas AWAY from the Convo for a night, um, keep going with this one.

I chose not to come down for this one for the reasons you suggested.  I don't think it's a bad game to play, I just felt that given the games I plan to be at in the next couple weeks, it didn't make the list.  Can we make fans out of folks from Marietta?  I don't know. I'd like to think so, but are they fans of Marshall instead?  WVU?  tOSU?

I doubt they are fans of either WV team.  Probably a lot of A&M fans.

Your analysis suggests Marietta brought over 5.000 fans...Their highest attended game AT HOME this season was 1,040.  I realize the excitement of playing a D1 school may have brought more fans out despite it being on the road...but I don't think over 4,000 more.  I was there, along with the several others that have said in this thread they thought Ohio had more, but not by much, and many with the same Convo experience as you.  I'm not trying to discount that there was a lot of Marietta fans there, and hats off to them for coming out.  I just think taking our attendance minus our average and assuming the result are Marietta fans is a little too simplistic, but I'm a geeky accountant so maybe I'm just not comfortable with such analysis.

Then what you are saying lends credence to the idea that the general SEO basketball fan will turn out to see local universities at the Convo. If these games are important to the local community then I think we've got to keep playing them.

Then why are you so negative about hosting FCS schools in football if you are more than comfortable about the idea in basketball? Or Louisiana Lafayette in football? It doesn't really make any sense because while a Southern Conference or Sun Belt school has some status in football it has none in men's hoops.

Since I always like to speak for the Love, I think he found Morgan St. "compelling" because of Todd Bozeman and Lamar "compelling" due to Pat Knight.  Not sure about Arkansas St.

Or people have been watching the box scores (so to speak) and the recent winning ways of the team on the road brought more bandwagon fans out to see them in their first home game in a couple of weeks.

Huh? They get an auto bid to the same tournament as the ACC, Big 12, Big East, SEC, and MAC.

They're all considered Division I in basketball.

In football they're in a lower division. That's not compelling.

Ark State b/c of John Brady, btw.

1. Nobody from Columbus came........BALONEY! I drove down Rt 33 as usual - plenty of OHIO decals seen along the way. Plus, I brought 3 along instead of the usual 2.

2. I am in the Platinum section - more seats full Than Any Game This year! However, quite a few of those black courtside seats across the way were empty - they better have asses in them vs MAC opponets, even for games that are less than "marquis/rival" opponent - need a strong 6th man right on 'em - not a row of empty folding chairs holding the Ozone back.

3. The population of basketball fans actually living in all of Washington County - minus OHIO fans - think about it, no mathematicaly possible way they had 5,000 there!

4. OHIO play at Marietta? NO, NEVER! I'll say it again - NO, NEVER!

Anyone want to point out Ark. State is NOT FCS?

The Ohio/Marietta split was fairly close to 50/50; Groce said it seemed like a road game when they came out of the locker room. Either way, thanks for coming and thanks for your money. Come again.

And did anyone feel a little bit like a power school fan? Seeing their fans, thinking they had no chance... I can see why they get so smug.

Definately felt "smug" - but have to admit I appreciated their spunk and spirit.

Yes, why not.  Can you imagine the goodwill this would generate?  Actually, Marietta is Ohio's oldest rival.  We played our first football game against them in 1894.  No, I wasn't there, but I actually knew someone who was! :-)

Been to Marietta. Whilst I love history and gyms of all shapes and sizes there is no way parking, concessions, seating and locker room placement work for an OU invasion. That is just unacceptable even when filled with John Rhodes fans of OU origin wanting to see his ONU team let alone a Groce team that has some swagger.

I've got no problem playing Marietta...  At home.  If we are travelling to Marietta, I expect $1,000,000.  Think they're in?

I've seen crazier things happen.

Louisville went to Northern Kentucky... going to Marietta wouldn't be completely without peer. Borna makes a good point, though. I'd be for it. It'd be fun.
