I happened to have CBS Sports Network on very late last night...Allie LaForce was one of the two anchors.  The subject of the Heisman finalists came up.  She said that she's never been supportive of Jordan Lynch being one of the finalists because "he didn't play anybody.  He played the MAC."

She is entitled to her opinion.  But I was disappointed in how she expressed this.  She could have said something to the effect that NIU's conference opponents weren't as highly rated as the conference opponents of the other Heisman candidates.  But she had to make a snarky and snide putdown of the conference that basically put her on the map.

Is she forgetting her roots?

Put an SEC defense and offensive line around Lynch and he'd be Tebow 2.0, a guy uniquely suited for college football. His numbers wouldn't be quite as good, but he'd be lauded as a gritty game manager "who just wins" football games by men who repeatedly use the word "footbaw" as an adjective.

Still, Jameis Winston is the right choice.

Though I don't really care much about an award that Peyton Manning, John Elway and Andrew Luck didn't win.

I think she spends an inordinate amount of time and attention on her roots.

I agree, but Charles Woodson almost single handidly won Michigan a national championship, back when the Big Ten was arguably better than the SEC.

Also agree with Jeff. She could have put it a better way. Especially for someone who played in the conference.

You mean she's not a natural blonde?

That's as close-minded as Herbstreit, Palmer and Pollock. Very weak, Allie.

Dr. Lou does that smack talking a bit too, but when it was Kent about to go to a BCS bowl, he just smiled.

Allie became incredibly less sexy the moment she was reported as using the "do you know who my boyfriend is?" line to get into a club. weak

Disappointing but unfortunately not surprising. I hope she still has some loyalty/affection to her school/conference, but she's a Buckeye fan so I don't expect her to give the MAC much credit. Maybe that will change in time.

Even though she's a sports personality (and don't get me wrong, I wish her well in her career), I sort of lump her in with any other Bobcat alum that roots for OSU because it's: easy/cool/socially acceptable/everyone else is doing it/mom got me a shirt for Christmas when I was 5 and I've liked them ever since/etc. I'll just roll my eyes, and hope the culture continues to change.

And to her point, NIU played/beat zero teams in the top 25. But to counter... I don't think Johnny Football or the BC running back beat any top 25's either, although they did play and lost to a few. So I guess they did play tougher.

But you also have to understand, her comments - it's the easy thing to say and that's the annual argument about any non AQ, and I don't expect her to say anything that may put her on an island. Going with the masses. (which goes back to the tOSU sheep/follower comment I suppose)

Should we expect a novel thought from someone that did pageants and now regurgitates boiler plate truisms via the lowest form of communication: sports broadcast journalism?

A lot of what she does relies on the support of "fans".  My guess is that being from Ohio, it makes sense for her to root for the Buckeyes because a large number of her fans from Ohio are Buckeye fans.  Although it sucks, it would definitely be in her best interest to be a Buckeye fan as well from a career standpoint...

To be fair to Allie, she was an HTC student here. That probably put her in the 90th percentile of her fellow Ohio University classmates in terms of intelligence.

Yeah, I totally understand this. And like 'everyone' else, I'm sure it started at a very young age as well. I don't have to like it though!

This reminds me in a not too good way of Jimmy Crum, of Channel 4 in Cowtown.  He was an Ohio alumnus that became one of the biggest shills for the Evil Empire.  He did occasionally admit that he went to OHIO, but not often.  My objections to him were that he didn't really report on OSU sports; he was more like a high priest who was constantly handing out A&M communion wafers.  He worshiped at the Shrine of Woody and the Altar of Fred.  This, in my mind, has always set Columbus sports journalism apart from almost anywhere else.  My youngest daughter went to UMich and I was exposed at various times to the sports reporting in A2.  While it could be partisan and less than objective, I never sensed the kind of "religiosity" that I did then and do now in Cowtown.  The whole milieu in our capital city is just so over-the-top with the worship of all things A&M.  If, for example, Jerkstreet had been living in A2, I don't think he'd have had moved to Tennessee for fear of his family's safety because he occasionally tries to be semi-objective.

Agree with you, mcbin.

But she could be a Buckeye fan and still be fair to her HOME conference, the MAC.  Sort of the way Peter King tris to present Ohio in a positive light when he gets the chance.

May Loki, Imp of #MACtion, strike me down where I sit......but the national perspective on QBs from non-pro style offenses in this league is dead on. They can't/don't translate well.

Best talk I had at the MACC game was with a scout for an NFL team at the half. This guy was clearly a non-player/coach type like myself, a Jonah Hill-esque nerd.

About Jordan Lynch, he simply laughed, said he'd be a courtesy 7th rounder, and made fun of how BG played him man coverage with no safety all game.......and neither he nor his coaches attempted to adapt.

the problem is that she is propagating a negative stereotype that she knows is not a fair characterization. It also reflects poorly on her because she got her education and experience "from just a MAC school".

you don't hear Peter King or Jason Whitlock selling out and dismissing the MAC and they've had ok careers as sports journalists.

its lazy and its disappointing. I would expect this from a Miami grad, but not one of our own.

It is my understanding even he does not plan/expect to be a qb at the next level. Is going to try to convert to TE/H back.

Still waiting for Alan Swank to chime in here about how bigoted all you people are being.  Have you no empathy for a young, tall, thin, semi-famous, blond haired, blue eyed, HTC student just trying to get by in this world?  You ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

[End extreme sarcasm.]

I don't think anyone is saying Jordan Lynch should win the Heisman. He's worth the invite, he's worth consideration. I'm just saying that if he was the quarterback at Auburn, he'd have a legitimate chance. A stupid, but legitimate, chance.

Sorry Brian...my harsh words are for "talking heads" types. Not hard-working heroes like yourself and Mr. Haldeman.
