Lol...that's the funny thing.  If MSU ran out with Michigan flags, OSU fans would probably make fun of them and say how stupid they are.  Same for Florida State, Oregon State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, etc.  However, it's OK since they are the Buckeyes, right?

Well, this little stunt finally made me make the jump from occasional reader to poster!

Just a quick thought to those who think this is bringing any form of positive pr to OUr university.  The face of Ohio University has--at least for the near future--become an Ohio drop out, community college student who planned a year of his life around grabbing his shallow 15 minutes of Youtube fame.

Hardly who I want representing this university.

I've got no problem with this.

Mascots will be mascots.  It's a sad day in our society when we over-analyze a guy dressed up like a Bobcat chasing a guy dressed like a nut.

Why is this news?  Because it is funny.  Nothing more.  Sounds like a mascot doing his job.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Here's the thing...and I know I will get slammed for this.

If the tables were turned...the same people who are thinking it is funny/cool/no big deal/whatever...would be screaming bloody murder.  "Some dumb a&m, hillybilly, drop out, pos......."  They would want to hang the guy by his "nuts" and throw garbage at him.

My opinion is, he does kind of make ou (who I like by the way, and I am an alum of Ohio State) look bad.  But nobody was hurt, so no harm no foul.  It will eventually fad away in a few days (except maybe on this thread, which I have enjoyed)

However, If I were an ou alum I would be wicked pi$$ed at this kid for a statement he made:

When he was told he was banned from being the bobcat he said "I don't really care".  If the guy playing Brutus said that, I would want to know why in the heck my university selected someone who (in his own words) "doesn't care".  That would be the most distressing part of this for me.

I can't fathom, for 1 minute, that there is not a line of ou students who would want to represent their university, and care about doing that job.

Because he *didn't* care. That's the funniest (craziest? weirdest?) part. According to his quotes it's not like he became the Bobcat because it's something that he really wanted to do, and he just so happened to tackle Brutus. He became the Bobcat solely *because* he wanted to tackle Brutus.

Also, I know it's weird for OSU fans to imagine, but we're used to people not caring about the sports teams in Athens.

I agree with all of your points, its bush league and an embarrassment to Ohio University. Although you're right about what our reaction would be if the tables were turned, I do think other people's reactions would be different. Part of what makes this story work as a 3rd party spectator is the undertone and imagery of the fool hearted little guy running head first into the giant beast, with total disregard to logic or personal safety. It invokes similar feelings as that nutbag flight attendant who went postal, grabbed a beer, and hit the escape chute. It was a really dumb thing to do, but since no one got hurt its kinda funny too. And you gotta admit, that picture of poor Brutus getting punched in the head, with that look of surprise on his face, is pretty funny, all things considered.

The way I see it it, "I don't really care" speaks volumes.

He doesn't care about the way he represents the University he attended for a year.
He doesn't care about any possible repercussions that might come from this (regardless of how ludicrous they might be)
He doesn't care about having pride for being Rufus. (Despite what you might think currently, tackling Brutus from the back shouldn't be a source of pride.  Either way, I'm more talking about he didn't care about being Rufus, he just wanted to tackle Brutus and he chose your mascot to do that means to an end.

RUFUS IS A LEGEND AND UNLESS OHIO HAD BEATEN OHIO STATE IT WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE SAME AMOUNT OF PUBLICITY..NO WE DIDNT WIN THE GAME BUT WE WON THE MASCOT FIGHT. AND YES IT IS PRETTY AMATURISH BUT ARENT MASCOT SUPPOSED TO ENTERTAIN? THE CHEERLEADERS BLESS THEIR HEART WHERE CHEERING TO THE OHIO STATE SONGS...AND SINCE A LARGE MAJORITY OF THE OHIO FANS AND FAMILY WAS STUCK IN A DUNGEON COFFIN CORNER WE COULD NOT CHEER WITH THEM. FAIL FAIL FAIL. I SAY GET THIS KID BACK IN SCHOOL AND GIVE HIM A SCHOLARSHIP...THE FIRST ATTEMPTED TACKLE LOOKED LIKE OUR GUYS TRYING TO BRING DOWN TERELL PRYOR..BUT THIS GUYS MOTOR DOESNT GIVE UP..PUTS HIS HELMET (HEAD) BACK ON AND CHASES DOWN THE NUT HEAD. THERE IS TOO MUCH BUCKEYE ENVY IN THESE PARTS FROM OHIO STUDENTS AND ALUMNI...WHATS THE FUSS ABOUT..DO YOU THINK  IF THE TABLES WAS TURNED AND BRUTUS KICKED THE BOBCATS BEHIND THE BUCKEYE NATION WOULD SAY WOES ME..SORRY BOBCAT KITTENS FOR OUR MIGHTY BRUTUS KICKING YOUR MASCOTS BUTT...NO THEY WOULD LAUGH AND SAY THATS WHAT WE ARE SUPPOSED TO DO KICK BUTT.

Just got back to Boston from Cbus, and I have to say that the fact that this event has garnered as much pub in Cbus as it has is comical in and of itself.  Everybody needs more going on in their lives in Ohio if this event has created this kind of emotion.

The Few, The Proud, The Bobcats!

And for the record, I hate tOSU, and Ricordati and Torgerson are DB's.

I agree with this.  And how the heck did a guy who doesn't even attend the school get the gig?  Whatever happened to the tradition of the mascot being a Lincoln Hall resident?  The guy (and/or gal) who wears the costume should live and breath Ohio athletics and pride.

If you listen to that interview he said only 2 people showed up for the Rufus tryout.

For his tryout he did the worm in front of the volleyball coach and got the job.

On one of the message boards I post on, one of the guys actually is one of their Brutus Buckeyes.

He was in costume for the game yesterday, and here is his take.
(Now, his side may be a little biased too, but I'll give you his side nonetheless)

Quote:
I figured someone would mention this, and yes it was me that was Brutus during this. I'm only going to comment on this once so here's the story.

Basically myself and another cheerleader were running the flag like any other game leading the team out onto the field. All of a sudden I see the bobcat running at me. Obviously at first I was very confused and then realized that he was going to try and tackle me. As he went to tackle me, I lowered my shoulder and sent him to the ground and his head popped off (the pinnacle of mascot embarrassment). I then figured that was over with so I started to walk towards the endzone and was firing up the crowd. All of a sudden I feel someone jump on my back....it was the bobcat. He starts legit punching me so I jump and fall back on my back so that I land on him. He keeps punching so I throw him off of me and walk away.

It wasn't planned and he almost got thrown out of the game. A lot of people asked why I didn't wail on him and my response is not only did I not want that to be my last game (Big 10 has VERY strict rules in regards to mascot fights) but I didn't want the bobcat and OU to make headlines off of Brutus' name and fame. After the first two OSU touchdowns I decided to exact my revenge with a little more class by waving the flag directly in his face and repeatedly pointing to the scoreboard.....and that's all I have to say about that.

Also, a picture: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs715.snc4/63...

Funny how he made the headlines anyway.

I mentioned this before, but I guess it was ignored.  I would LOVE to be Rufus, and would do a damn good job, but I have NO IDEA who to go to, or what it requires.  THAT'S why no one tries out to be Rufus...

This is reason number 314 why I'm so passionate about the whole Ohio vs Ohio State thing.

When I was in Alabama for the GMAC bowl a couple years ago, a fan of Southern Miss actually asked me if we were the Buckeyes or not.

Never mind that OSU was set to play Florida (note that the word state is missing) the next night in the national champ game.

It was a stupid move on the part of this person.  With that said, you and other Ohio State fans make me sick.  Where were you calling for Alex Boone to be suspended after causing a wreck and being found guily of DUI.
http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2009/02/ohio_state_lineman_alex_boone.html

You and the other Ohio State fans cheered him on after missing Zero Games.  Boone has gone on to be arrested again for the same thing.  Tressel allowed Albert Dukes to be on the Ohio State sideline during the Alamo Bowl after having been charged with having sex with a minor.  I grew up an Ohio State fan in Columbus but the majority of the fans and Tressel looking the other way time and again makes me want to puke.  So Clarett is living off campus in a high dollar apartment his freshman year and Tressel claims he did not know?  It was clear he was an at risk person and you would think the position coach would be on top of things such as going to class.

Any yes, I think Solich should have missed games also after his DUI, just like the Ohio Players have in the same situation and just like Boone should have.  I just get sick of Ohio State Fans who are hypocrites.

Ironically, I just met a Clemson grad the other day who brought up Woody Hayes.  How many people did he punch before the Clemson Player?  He punched a photographer at the 73 Rose Bowl and also hit the ABC Cameraman during the 1977 Michigan Game.  OSU looked the other way time and time again.

That speaks volume about a fans lack of knowledge of football.  I'm sorry, but no one that went to Ohio State ever just says they went to Ohio.  We're always Ohio State, O-state, THE Ohio State University.  If anyting the only mistake people SHOULD ever have is calling you guys University of Ohio.

NO WE DIDNT WIN THE GAME BUT WE WON THE MASCOT FIGHT.

In what world did we win the mascot fight?  Our guy blindsided the nut and bounced off him and lost his head.  He then tried to tackle him from behind and failed again. He then got escorted away by security.

Yet the OSUB does script Ohio, at Ohio Stadium, before the Ohio State players run out with just Ohio on the flags in front of them, followed by everybody chanting "OH-IO" even the comercials show have poeple just spelling out Ohio.

And you really wonder why there's a dissconnect?

Even your cheerleaders a few years ago dropped the state on thier uniforms.
