yeah, yeah, yeah, I agree but D^%$, it's still funny!

See the editorial cartoon in Wednesday's Dispatch, if you think the humor is totally lost up here in Cowtown.

This is the link provided by The Dispatch web site - maybe it works:

No it's not....I'm so embarrased......think of all the loss of funding because of the bad pub.....I'll never be able to wear an Ohio tee again......well except for maybe the one that I plan to get of Rufus punching Brutus.

It's not about bad pub, or impact on funding, or reputation, or any of that stuff. It's simply about labeling bad behavior as bad behavior--not waiting to check the pulse of public reaction before deeming the behavior good or bad.

The guy acted like a jerk. Now, in the minds of some OU alumni, he's getting away with it.

I'm still not impressed with him.

Agreed. It was bad behavior. And it reflects poorly on:

1. The OU administration (the embarrassment of seeing your mascot do that on national TV -- and to find out he's not even a student there)

2. The mascots before him that actually took pride in representing the university (it was formerly under the jurisdiction of the cheerleading advisor and including tryouts, interviews, etc. to help ensure integrity -- not sure what happened, but you can see the consequences of it not being monitored/regulated)

3. Alumni. Did this get OU great publicity? It is publicity, but I'm not sure it is great publicity. I've been getting emails from co-workers here in Illinois who know I went to OU and are questioning me about it. From people who don't care for either OSU or OU, they think it was a pretty classless move to jump on Brutus. It wasn't a playful mascot fight, it was an unprovoked, pathetic-looking assault.

The fact that he's not even a student, had planned it for years and said he didn't care about being the mascot anymore makes outsiders and alumni alike think, "What in the name of Richard Dean Anderson is going on down there in Athens?"

This just joins the list of other recent noteworthy national headlines about OU (can we get more of the Hoya-like headlines, please?):
-Solich DUI
-Georgetown upset (awesome)
-Halloween
-#2 party school
-Mascot attack

I support 2 through 5.

Sportsnation does another poll today......  86% of people enjoy seeing mascots get tackled.  Ohio again bringing up the rear with 73%.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Tom Boeh wouldn't have needed an apology, he would have needed a lawyer because he would have killed the kid, and then turned to the person who was in charge of the kid.

Big Deal.  Did anybody make any fuss about it when he did the same thing to the Buffalo mascot??  Obviously our athletic department didn't have a problem with it then...

I'll tell ya where we'll go. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talkin' bout a little place called... ATHENS.

Integrity tells me that this was a bad thing and that the U. should respond apprpriately.

Reality tells me that there's an exception for doing the do to a rival mascot for the columbus mascot and that this, as it ended up, is pretty funny.

Can someone please post a link to the Buffalo/Ohio mascot olay video from last year?  I watched it earlier from a link earlier in this thread and it was on youtube and now it has been taken down?

This is all rather unfortunate but I did get a small chuckle out of that video wanted to show it to a couple friends.

You ask and you shall receive. I couldn't find it either when I checked so I went ahead and uploaded it. Enjoy!

No one cared when he did it to the bull for two reasons:

1. The bull was an active participant in that exchange -- the bull just happened to get the worst of it... lol. (love that video)

2. What is Buffalo sucks?

You all are so serious. Were you at that game?  There was nothing to cheer about all day.  But I saw the Rufus stunt live and have watched it 10 times online and I still laugh my head off every time I watch it.  When you all have been alive 47 years as I have, you will enjoy someone sacrificing their mascot dreams to entertain the rest of us by beating on a nut-head non-mascot like Brutus who supposedly represents all of the State of Ohio. HILARIOUS! GO RUFUS! I miss him already.  It was OU's fault for poor hiring clauses on stunts,  but thank god they messed up!  Lighten up, ya'll !!!!!!

Of course most of the nation loves this act.

Rufus is now famous for the same reason "The Situation" is now famous.

People love to watch stupid people do stupid things.

I just hope that the university doesn't come down to harshly on the mascot by making whoever is playing Rufus follow overly strict rules that take away from the fun of having a mascot in the first place. The Brutus incident was very funny, but was also way overboard for what should be allowed and the fact that Brandon was aiming to take out Brutus no matter the costs really showed. And let me just say as well, I don't think the other mascot has to know about it for it to be allowed. Just as long as it is not a no mercy ambush like it was at OSU.

The fight with Victor E. Bull was totally acceptable because Rufus only took him out after he charged him when Rufus pulled out the red cape. I didn't see Rufus appear behind the CMU coach in the MAC Championship Game, but this too was harmless and good mascot fun. I wish I could have seen it live!

Just flipping HBO stations and came across the special by Bryant Gumbell and Frank DeFord about mascots...yep, more free publicity!  At first, I was embarassed for OUr institution, then I lightened up and just thought it was funny.  Now, it tells me too many people have way too much time on their hands to view it on you tube and too many tv guys have hours of programming to fill and don't have really good stuff on all the time.  Nice filler.

I guess we should all just sit back and relax!  This news cycle will end some day.........

Exactly.  People are acting like someone was murdered.  It was one guy in a fuzzy suit tackling another guy in a fuzzy suit.  If funding doesn't increase after something like the Georgetown win or a bowl appearance, then it certainly won't decrease just because our mascot tackled another mascot.  I agree that he shouldn't have run out on the field while the team was behind Brutus.  That could have actually got someone hurt.  Seriously though, if this happened against anyone other than OSU would this even be a story?  I think it's only a story because a lot of people share a disdain for OSU.  In addition, even if you disapprove of the act, I'm sure you got many chuckles at a few of the pictures.

If people are so offended by this event, then they must have never walked down Court Street on Halloween, been around for any of the street "fests," or just about any Friday or Saturday night in Athens.  If anything, this event may have exposed Ohio University to some future students that never knew that it existed.  Obviously the bigger problem in the whole event is that the guy wasn't even an Ohio student, and that whoever was in charge still allowed him to wear the costume.  Everyone needs to gain a little perspective on this event and learn to laugh a little.

That story sums up the whole thing quite well including clearly drawing a distinction between the two schools, presenting a logical mascot point of view and clearly drawing attention to a lack of oversight and supervision.

This kid summed up what I and others have been trying to say and unfortunately did so within an interview with a national publication...

Brian Crane, who carried a sledgehammer as Purdue Pete from 1993-95, couldn't believe a school would be so lazy as to let a non-student represent the university in such a prominent role. "Somebody's head needs to roll for that," Crane said.

Even I will admit those t-shirts are outstanding, when you step back and look at it, a kid with no loyalty to or respect for the University was in a position to do some real damage (and he did).  The fact that the Administration (Marketing in this case which is funny in and of itself) allowed this to happen just fuels the whole Halloween / Daylight Savings party school image.  Yes I know as others have pointed out, a student could have pulled the same stunt but at least in that case there are viable repercussions involved.

Don't get me wrong...I love Ohio the way I do bc of the entire experience I had there (including the partying) but that goes on at virtually every college campus.  The fact is that it's the Administration's job to battle that reputation and this kind of amateur oversight certainly doesn't help.

There's clearly plenty of creativity and enthusiasm to be tapped in Athens which makes it the perfect place to implement something like Stanford has.  If you make it cool to be Rufus, everyone wins...

http://www.stanforddaily.com/2010/02/25/cortes-is-tree/

And this was truly funny...

"I recently installed arm branches to give the vicious pythons I sport at the end of my shoulders free reign," said Cortes, who drew his own blood to make a bloody mary during February's "Tree Week" to beat out four other saplings for the job. "Should any [stuff] go down, I have a couple fists -- one I call Iron, the other I call Justice -- and I just rain both down on the heads of any would-be attackers."
