It sounds as if the money wasn't quite large enough to make Oats leave a team that has made three MAC titles in four years, and will be heavily favored to win again next season. I'll believe it when I see him on the sidelines next year at Buffalo. Final Four weekend is when a lot of coaching deals are made so I wouldn't be shocked if something happens. I would like to see him stay in the MAC because it's good for the league, though.

But if Chris Mack goes to Louisville and takes his staff with him (which appears to be the case if the rumors in this city are true), then Oats is an attractive candidate for Xavier.

IF Mack goes to UL what kind of shot does Steele have at X? X seems to be good about bringing guys "up the bench" .

If I'm X that's probably the first guy I look at to keep the coaching tree alive. He's also been the guy to bring in all of the recruits they've had recently. I've heard he might be going to Louisville with Mack though. There was also a Tubby Smith to X rumor floating around, but I'm pretty sure that won't fly.

I don't know.....this guy truly likes living in Buffalo. I see him staying at least one more year and seeing if he can make a Loyola type run. Buffalo is loaded next year and adding 4-star recruits...he's done a phenomenal job. I believe that we'll see a MAC team in the Final Four in our lifetime. He has all the pieces to obviously win MAC again next season and make at least a strong run to Sweet 16. It will be interesting to see the schedule Buffalo is able to get for 2018-2019.

Hopefully their success coupled with Ohio's wins in this decade lead the rest of the country to believe that the MAC is more than a one-bid league. Now, Ohio and others certainly still have to schedule better as well.

As much of a disaster as that search has been, not a bad hire this late in the game.

It's getting next to impossible for any mids to get at-larges. Mid-majors success in the tournament is making it harder not easier to get bids. With every VCU, GMU or Butler that crashes the party the money schools introduce a new wrinkle in the process to make sure it doesn't happen again. Right now the powers that be aren't thinking "Wow, maybe Loyola's success means we should include more mids". Instead they are thinking "Well, that didn't work..." Next up, taking away automatic qualifiers so they can keep us out entirely.

The tournament would expand before they shut out the mids IMO.

Loyola in the Final 4 must be killing Jay Bilas. If he had his way, there would be no mid majors in the dance.

Sadly, I think you are correct about the difficulty for mid-major at-larges. I read a story where an NCAA official said on a radio interview that the Kentucky loss "hurt them" (in regards to ratings).

The NCAA and CBS are relying on big-time matchups to drive ratings for higher ads. The irony is that one of the Final Four teams represents the third largest market in the US and they are still complaining because it's not a "blue-blood".

THe whole city of Chicago is behind this team. The NCAA should count their blessings and get behind this team..... a whole city is.

The interesting thing is that there seems to be a movement in the college basketball media to call out the selection process. Increasingly, follows I have on Twitter, like Mark Adams on ESPN, and Mike Decourcy, and even Lunardi, among a few others, are calling into question how teams are selected from near the bottom of a 'power' league instead of the tip-top of the mid-major ranks. Maybe it wont' go anywhere, but at least it's not just fans like us complaining.

I bet the Chicago ratings on Saturday for this will be really high. Sports fans here have nothing else to root for. The Bulls? The Blackhawks? Plus, everyone loves a 98-year-old nun sitting courtside in a wheelchair!
