UA's board has been controlled by political hacks for 20 years, much to the detriment of the school. Perhaps the current prez doesn't want to put up with it any longer. The KSU-Akron merger will be a state matter. How powerful are the KSU/Akron alumni on a statewide basis? Not very would be my hunch. Factor in that it just simply makes sense from a fiscal standpoint and from a higher education standpoint and that OSU will likely push it behind the scenes. Opposition? Possibly from UC (which might see a competitor being created) and from BGSU and UT (which might see themselves as next in line for a shotgun wedding). However, does anyone remember when BGSU tried the same thing? I don't remember the exact timeframe, but I think it might have been sometime in the 1980s, when a president of Bowling Green said the proportion of state support had slipped so much that he was going to drop "State" from the name of the institution. So for awhile, I think maybe no more than a year or two, all the news releases out of that institution called it Bowling Green University. Anyone remember the details of this?
