Attended the OSU-Nebraska game last night at the Schott. I felt vile the entire game and really didn't want to touch anything...that being said a hanging jumbotron is EVERYTHING. I know we've had these conversations before but the I had more interest in watching what was going on on the jumbo than the actual game.

The looks on fans faces as they popped up on the screen was pure happiness, every single time. Kids dancing, parents dancing, old people dancing, it literally made the entire atmosphere. Everything else they did marketing wise and in game experience wise was really not much different than what we do (matter of fact, we do more as far as marketing goes). Their student section really was not much different than ours. They had 4 sections of students with only the middle section cheering, the rest of the kids were standing silently and on their phones. Granted it was a monday night game against nebraska. The older fans really didn't get too into the game. It was very similar to a weeknight mac game, more fans but really didn't make much of a difference.

The glaring difference is the jumbotron and the reactions it garnered from the fans. The simple gesture of getting face time in the arena is very very underrated and give fans something to remember once they leave. IMO we will never get the same atmosphere as other schools unless we get one. Think I remember from an old thread that the convo isn't structurally able to withstand the weight of a hanging scoreboard?

Also, their band is garbage and boring. The 110 kicks their a**.

Glad the approval was given for Ohio. Just hope they take full advantage of this and do it right and make this thing pop.

Agreed - use it as marketing and advertising tool, not just a fancy big screen.

Also - here's the Post write up:

And a look at the EMU board they're looking to emulate:

We struggle to run an ESPN3 production and staff cameras over break, how do you think we are going to staff a video board and provide replay shots? Just curious.

This is a legitimate question. Hopefully that is being addressed now, not next December.

If you spend most of your time watching the Jumbotron, you are not much of a basketball fan! I can think of other ways to be entertained without buying a ticket to a game I'm not going to watch.

That was then, this is now. The new, much lighter video board can be hung safely from the Convo rafters, as I understand it.

When I heard about the tsunami warning in Alaska, I assumed it was related to this. But then I heard the warning was cancelled, checked this board and was disappointed in the lack of a earth-shattering level reaction

Akron has nice scoreboard & sound upgrades this year. And stats in all four corners. I used the stats more than the center hung, but it was nice to watch replays.

Takes money and staffing. I’m not the one complaining about the lack of over head scoreboard.

lol thought the exact same thing. I was at an Ohio state game, I dislike the buckeyes more than Miami and the fan experience was more interesting to me than watching the buckeyes struggle to beat nebraska on a monday night. Maybe you don't watch the jumbotron but the vast majority of fans do. Not to mention, the majority of "entertainment" on the screens are done during dead balls.

Also, video board operations sounds like a great opportunity for an intern or practicum for those pursuing media production jobs in sports.

While it's been around for what, over 30 years? I still think the Jumbotron experience is an enjoyable part of a major sporting event. I've been to pro and college games all over the country and it's a staple for entertainment for stoppage of play-pre game, timeouts, halftime etc. Fans young and old still seem to get a kick out of seeing themselves on the big screen. I know I do. I can see some kind of "Best Ohio Fan" promo where they pan the crowd and find some poor half asleep soul who they point out and call him a Miami fan or something.

Personally I think it will be a great addition to the fan experience in The Convo. The four current panels look more like something you would see at a high school. It's interesting that they referenced the one at EMU as it caught my eye watching some highlights from Saturday's game.

As far as staffing I would certainly think there is competent student talent on campus, especially for someone whose major will lead them to a job/internship doing something similar for the Palookaville Mudcats during short season single A ball.

As an aside.....I haven't been in The Convo is nearly 4 years. It looks like they went to a different lighting arrangement some time ago, making it darker in the stands with the lighting focused mainly on the playing court?

Yes, this is something they did -- to an even greater extent -- when the Convo first opened. Then they got away from it for awhile.

Thank you for confirming! That's definitely my preference whenever watching indoor sports. It always seemed too bright to me in The Convo with all of the lights it up.

Stumbled upon this document on the University's capital projects bids. It looks like they have 4 bids ranging from around $1-2 million. I don't really know what the Alternatives columns mean, but I thought people here would find this interesting.

I can shed a little light on the alternatives but I will admit I don't know what they all mean...

Alternative #1 - 6.0 mm Class Video Board
Alternative #2 - Nichie/Cree LED Lamps
Alternative #3 - Enlarged Video Board
Alternative #4 - (2) New 16' Wide x 4' High Fixed Digit Boards
Alternative #5 - (4) New 16' Wide x 4" High Video Display Boards
Alternative #6 - (8) New Locker Room Clocks (3) New Shot Clocks and Controller
Alternative #7 - Additional Speakers
Alternative #8 - Continuous Video Ribbon Display Board
Alternative #9 - Enlarged Continuous Video Ribbon Display Board

The last two are for a ribbon around the scoreboard not the concourse.
