Attended the game with OUCountry so I'll share my thoughts:

-Pitiful crowd. Not sure what the deal was there. But the people that were there appreciated the effort the guys put on the floor. I mentioned to Ryan that I think they played well because they were pissed nobody showed up. "Oh yeah? You don't wanna show up? Well, here watch this."

-This team is a really fun watch for anyone who enjoys technical basketball. Maybe that's a reason for the crowds not being there? I don't know. But most everyone on the team is really good at finding open spaces, making crisp passes and making the "smart play." I don't think I've ever seen a team pass up so many open looks...only to get a more open look. Mike was on fire yesterday and at one point late in the game, he got a wide open three pointer in the corner, but decided to pass it to either Jimmy or Gavin for a more wide open look. Incredible.

-Don't dare try playing a zone against this team. Mike, Gavin and even sometimes Jimmy/Zach/Teyvion were excellent at flashing to the open spot in the middle. Once the ball got there, good luck stopping them from breaking you down further. Mike, Kevin and Jason did an especially good job of cutting to the open spot on the baseline once the guy in the middle caught the ball.

-Jimmy G can spot up on those wings and corners on a fast break or breakdown of a zone defense all day for my team. His confidence is growing with each shot he puts up. And he's actually a pretty good defender from what I saw yesterday.

-Uhh, where did Kevin Mickle come from? Ryan mentioned whomever convinced him to come to Athens needs a big thank you. He was a monster in the paint yesterday. You could tell #23 for WKU was getting frustrated because he couldn't stop him.

-Free throw shooting...that's more like it! 31-35?

-Seeing Mike's development from the first time he stepped on the floor as a freshmen to now has been a real treat. The difference is staggering.

-This was a big win, especially when you consider that Jordy didn't get to play. Let's not underestimate that.

Planned to head to the game after my son's game at 11:30 in Upper Arlington, which should have ended at about 12:30. But the game scheduled previously had their opponent go to the wrong gym so everything got pushed back about 45 minutes. By the time we were done, we didn't have a shot and I was not a happy Bobcat. So if you know anyone from the Johnstown 5th grade basketball team, make sure to pass along that they ruined my family's Sunday plans. My sweet 5 year old daughter even cried when we told her we weren't going to Athens. Bless her heart.

Did catch the 2nd half on ESPN3. I like this team a lot. I like the ball movement and the hustle, and the wide array of ball skills from guards to forwards. My one concern is the lack of great outside shooting other than Dartis. But man with Carter, Kirk, Laster, etc. they sure can drive to the hoop. I don't recall a time where there are 9 players I am comfortable and eager to see get regular minutes.

Excited for Marshall, then it's a bit of a snooze fest until the MAC opener Jan 2.

I'm not as concerned with the outside shooting as you are. While Gavin, Mike, Zach, and Jimmy G aren't as polished as Jordy, I think they're capable enough to hit open shots when the ball is moving quickly. Add Jason into that mix too once he gets more comfortable. They were 6-19 yesterday, and that's with Gavin going 1-6.

Couldn't tell what Bearden said but whatever it was it was called quickly and demonstratively. Laster started by doing the "feed me" thing and I think he would have been fine if he stopped there but after he did that he clearly looked straight at the guy he was guarding and kept talking. My guess is that if Bearden hadn't just been called for it then Laster probably wouldn't have been called.

"Some of the fouls late that were called were cheapies. Guys just showing a hand and the refs gave the WKU players, who were clearly just trying to do anything (somewhat out of control) the benefit of the doubt and put them on the line. The refs had a weird game. They let the boys play for the most part, but then there were some questionable things like the Bearden/Laster techs. Really would like to know what was said by both of those guys."

Personally, I thought the refs' whistles benefitted Ohio in the first half and would prefer to see the game played with a "no harm, no foul" mentality. There was a definite phantom foul against Ohio called on the late 3-point "attempt" that was likely an anticipation whistle. All in all, I agree that refs had a weird game.

One of my pet peeves is a defender flopping and the ref rewarding this Oscar-winning act by calling a charge.

Having said that, however, I thought JC was twice incorrectly whistled for a blocking foul (once in each half) when he established himself in plenty of time outside of the arc. Or were my eyes failing me?

Replays (and color commentator agreed) seemed to show he was in position to take the charge both times. The first one was almost textbook.

Good summary. I'm glad you were able to join us yesterday!

The first half the offense looked fantastic. The ball moved FAST on the offensive end. The healthier this team gets, the decisions on who gets the minutes is going to get tougher and tougher. I'm really anxious to see how AJ and Ben work their way into this group.

I'm already a big fan of Mickle. Athletic, hard working, well spoken kid who is getting it done more often than not. How he didn't play more for FGCU would be an interesting college hoops research project.

Were you at the game? If you were you'd know that there is no way in heck that Western would let us take the full 35. We were lucky to get 10 with their swarming D.

Also, it's just 30 not 35. Has been since 15-16.

I kind of chuckled. That little clock on the top of the basket starts at 30 for a couple of seasons now ....for those at the game....

The WKU "swarming D" was what impressed me most about them today - They were as aggressive on the ball D as you will ever see. And why I did not think this game was over until the last couple seconds.....

Believe that we can win. the medi's were predicting three slaughters. I was not at the game, I followed the play by play. We made some stupid fouls down the stretch, but we pulled the game out. Allen said we should win two out of three, the medi's said that if the Cat's showed up and Saul smiled, that would be enough to satisfy them. Let's beat Marshall and win two out of this current three game stretch. Medi's beat your chest, get your Saul dolls out and celebrate we won. Let's go cat's. These cat's can do anything that they put their mind too.

If you were following the play by play, how is it possible to know if the fouls were "stupid fouls" without seeing them, or at least hearing the radio broadcast? I'm not sure there were many bad fouls. WKU did apply good pressure at the end to keep it interesting.

Are you talking about these Medi's? https://www.themedi.org / (sorry, I had to use Google to understand "medi's" and it led me to the above site)

Also, in case anyone needs a Saul doll, they look like this:

As opposed to the ref just letting a guy back a guy down to the rim? I couldn't stand watching Shaq play. Sometimes a defender in good position has no choice but to flop.

WKU just lost to Wisky 81-80 after getting a bucket with 2 ticks left to tie, and then committing a foul with 2 ticks left to put UW on the line. Must have been a deadball foul, all I see is a play-by-play.

Anybody know what happened?

They lost on and awful charge call. The ref initially called a block and changed it to a charge. What makes it worst is that WKU had just tied the game and Wisconsin was inbounding underneath WKU’s basket. The play happened 93 feet away from the basket.

How could it have been a charge if UW had the ball but shot the resulting free throw to win?

Fair questions all under the circumstances. Wisconsin’s inbounded ran the baseline ( as allowed after a made hoop) and his inbound defender ran into a Whisky player who had set up on the baseline in order to entice a charge.
The defender for Western K. is a freshman and he (obviously) did not think of that possibility when mirroring the running inbounder. He never saw him.
It was a tough way to lose such a hard fought game.

It wasn't a charge . The ref called it a block and stuck with it. It was a horrible call IMO. Probably should have been a no call. WKU got robbed.

Video that I've seen isn't conclusive, but did the Wisconsin player who flopped have his left foot in bounds? I believe the rule states that he has to be in bounds to get this call.

I think it's a genius playcall to get a basket when you need a basket with little time remaining. What's your issue with the call? Looks easy enough to me. Official got the signal wrong, but that's still a foul.

First of all, the offensive player's foot was on the base line so it was a violation, second he started sliding before the defender ran into him. He had just flopped 1 minute earlier, lastly the refs should not decide the game.

Refs should always decide the game when there's a clear violation. One of my pet peeves is officials who will not call the same foul in the last minute of a game that they'll call during the rest of the game. It's completely absurd. A foul is a foul, period. Now, I'm not commenting on this particular call because I haven't seen it. From reading the descriptions here, I suspect that WKU got homered, but I have no independent judgement on that issue.
