Similar to the band, I'm confident our Bobcat fan contingent will be large enough to get the job done.

I've seen crazier things happen.

80 kind of goes along with their 50th Anniversary.
I believe that in Thrailkill's first year, they only marched around 100.

I'm sure someone has mentioned this before, but what were they called prior to having 110 members?

Yes, the name of the band was the 110 Marching Men of Ohio. I'm fairly certain that they had an actual 110 that first year, though I think that number included the flag bearers as well as those with instruments.

Prior to the reorganization and going "all male" the band was simply called the Ohio University Marching Band. The previous director was Charles Minelli, who was an old school guy. However, when we played Harvard and sent the band to the game, Minelli came back and told my father once in a conversation they had on the college green, "Harvard is 50 years behind the times in marching band technique."

There videos on youtube from 1967 and !968.

The announcer calls the band "The Ohio University Marching Band"

Maybe, because of the controversy for going all male, they didn't want to throw it in people's faces.

A while ago there was a video that referred to the band as the "marching 100".
Tried to find it on youtube today, but couldn't.

When I got there in the fall of 1971 they were the "110 Marching Men of Ohio"

The early videos, they're actually film, are really grainy so you can't count how many members were on the field.

According to the ever semi-accurate Wikipedia:

Gene Thrailkill (1966–1971)
After arriving at Ohio University in 1966, Gene Thrailkill made drastic changes to the Ohio University Marching Band. While there were some controversial changes having to do with membership, he ultimately hoped to increase the band's size from approximately 85 members. The following fall, 112 marchers were chosen to march in the new band. Other changes included new traditional uniforms and a new style for the band. With popular music of the day, hard-driving marching and a great "esprit-de-corps," the 110 Marching Men of Ohio began "The Most Exciting Band in the Land." Thrailkill was also the originator of the 110's "Diamond Ohio" formation at Ohio University. After The Ohio State University Marching Band used "Diamond Ohio" ,Thrailkill pushed for the "Diamond Ohio" formation to give the band its own trademark. Thrailkill was director of bands until 1971. Prior to his arrival to Ohio University in 1966, Thrailkill served as director of instrumental music for the New Lebanon Public Schools (Ohio). He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan and a Master of Music degree from Ohio University. In 2000 Coach Thrailkill retired as Regents Professor and Professor of Music at The University of Oklahoma where he took over in 1971. He also served as Director of University Bands and headed the extensive OU band program. The Marching 110 was honored to have Mr. Thrailkill speak and guest conduct the 110 at Homecoming 2001. Mr. Thrailkill attended the Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning practices of the Marching 110, as well as the new OUMB Society of Alumni & Friends Display Case dedication ceremony in Memorial Auditorium.

I received my undergraduate degree in 1968.  I remember them being referred to as the 110 Marching Men of Ohio before I graduated.

When I got home I got out my "Diamond Ohio" book.
According to that, the "official" name of the band ,beginning in 1967 ,was "The Marching Men of Ohio".

The picture of the 1967 band shows 100 musicians.

I also looked at my 110 albums from 1971-1975.
The used the titles "Marching Men Of Ohio","110 Marching Men of Ohio" and "Ohio University Marching Band" interchangeably ,even on the same record.

The book also said 110 referred to the number of musicians in what became their "block".
Flags,Drum Major and twirler brought the number of marchers up above 110.

If anyone is a fan of O.U's bands from inception through 2004,at least that's the year of my copy, its a great read.

I know this really doesn't fit on travel thread other than I wish I could afford taking my boys to this game but will hold out for MACC trip to Detroit next year instead. But in relation to the band conversation and books about the band has anyone heard of "the band that refused to yield?" I have only found this book about the 110 picking, or vice versa, a fight with Fiami players upon returning to field before the half was over on Amazon readable only by a Kindle. Anyone know how to get a hard copy?

Couldn't believe there was enough "stuff" for someone to write a "book" about this.
Then I looked it up.
According to Amazon its only 14 pages.
Not exactly "War and Peace".

If you haven't,you may want to contact the Author about getting a copy.

I know I've done that with some other "obscure" books.
The authors were very nice.
One even sent me an autographed copy of her book.

A first for me. We (me and my OU senior son and a bunch of his OU friends) are watching the game at CLE airport en-route to Midway for Browns-Bears game on X-Mass Eve. Hope we have a win to start off the experience because God knows it will be a miricle if the Browns win! Go Bobcats!

RE: Ohio

"The very subjective least-clutch, top-shelf Group of Five program over the last several years, this might have been the best team in the MAC, but it didn’t get the chance to prove it with a total gag in the one game it had to win against Akron."

Ooof.

"It all depends on whether or not Ohio is Ohio. If it’s cranking up the pass rush, and if it’s able to dominate defensively on third downs like it has for most of the season, and as long it’s not getting whacked on turnovers, it should be fine."

Pretty much.

Pregame analysis from a UAB allied fan board. It looks fairly accurate from this end. If y'all have some similar articles, link them and I'll post them on our board.

The pictures of the Bahamas as the team was on the bus closing on the hotel looked lovely. Warmer, too, lol.

I've got an Independence-Bowl-vs-ULM feeling about this. I don't think it will be a cakewalk, AJ's status is concerning, and UAB's QB could give us fits. BUT...I think we are better than them.

OHIO 34
UAB 14

Which Ohio team shows up, the one that throttled Toledo or the team that yacked against Akron and Buffalo?

Part of me has that ULM feeling; part of me has that App State feeling of Camelia Bowl 2015 where we give UAB their first bowl victory ever.

I have no idea where this thing's going.

What the hey-it's in my nature to drink the green kool-aid. I think the men in green, knowing that they didn't play to their potential the last 2 games, and knowing they haven't won a bowl game in years, come out fired up and beat UAB, 38-28.

Totally agree ...

Ohio hasn't exactly laid down in any bowl game ... even when they lose, they tend to be pretty competitive ... with the exception of the Beefy Bowl when they got trucked by ECU ... but we all remember who QB'd that team, the King of Laydowns, Mr. Tettleton.

I think this will be a competitive game ... but as I said earlier ... what's Ohio's motivation? I know UABs ... first bowl win, cap off an amazing story in their first year back to football.

If Ohio shows up mentally ... they should win this game.

But the same could be said for Akron and Buffalo games (oh wait ... I'm not allowed to mention those anymore, am I? Oops)
