I would agree that had the game been the first few weeks, Ball State was better than Kent. The last 4-5 weeks, though, Ball State has been abysmal.

I would classify both as abysmal the last 4-5 weeks.

Kent 1-4
Ball 0-5

Kent #119
L 3-42 (@ Louisville #50)
L 13-27 (Buffalo #100) (UB playing with backup QB)
L 3-24 (@ NIU #49)
W 17-14 (Miami #104) (Miami playing with backup QB)
L 3-48 (@ Ohio #73)

3 TDs ... 39 points ... 7.8 ppg ... avg comp ranking of opponents #75

Ball #123
L 21-33 (@ WKU #93) (Lost game in final 1:30 ... led 21-20 with 1:38 left with backup QB)
L 3-55 (@ WMU #62) (Lost backup QB ... down to 3rd string)
L 3-31 (@ Akron #80)
L 9-56 (CMU #91)
L 17-58 (Toledo #29) (Lost 3rd string QB ... down to 4th string)

5 TDs ... 53 points .... 10.6 ppg ... avg comp ranking of opponents #71

Which leads me to the always uplifing fact that Ohio's wins are vs....

EMU #92
UMass #118
Kent #119
BG #121
Kansas #122

So depressing ...

Not even close how bad Ohio's schedule is compared even to the rest of the MAC according to Sagarin

53. Bowling Green
58. Akron
65. Kent State
84. Buffalo
92. Central Michigan
93. Northern Illinois
99. Western Michigan
103. Toledo
105. Ball State
108. Miami-Ohio
146. OHIO

12th worst in the country .... and that's mainly because the Sun Belt stakes claim to 6 worse schedules mainly because they have to play each other .... and they stink worse than the MAC top-to-bottom

Do you believe EMU is a bad football team?

I believe EMU has been a hard luck team this year. 6 straight losses by 23 total points ... including three in OT

Just the facts.

Definitely a bad performance by Kent, comparable to the recent Ball State performances. We'll see how Ball St does against EMU. Maybe they will turn it around, or maybe they will continue being awful.

Using those last five games (now 6 for Kent), and computing the equivalent performance using Sagarin ratings (i.e. opponent strength-home field advantage-margin of victory=equivalent performance), the games look like this:

Kent:
Louiville 40.9
Buffalo 44.4
NIU 51.8
Miami 59.3
Ohio 25.54
BGSU 20.4
Average 40.4 => bad MAC level, 40.3 in conference play
Ball St
WKU 48.8
WMU 19.0
Akron 34.4
CMU 8.6
Toledo 30.4
Average 28.2 => bad FCS level, only 23.1 in conference play

Remember ... Ball State is to their FOURTH STRING QB. Hard to give them a fair shake.

Kent might be on backup QB ... but he made his 6th start last night and has appeared in 25 games over the course of the last three years.

Ball QB probably still doesn't know where the dining hall is.

C'mon.

Just acknowledge Kent is freakin' awful! Did you watch them in any game other than the Ohio game? The "eye test" will tell you .... this team has ZERO. They flat out stink.

I watched a good part of Ball vs. UAB ... they looked okay in that game. More than I can say about Kent in about three years.

I was at the Ball-AB game (stopped on way home from Purdue). I thought they looked okay then. I haven't been following them much since then but they certainly looked much better that day. I didn't realize they were on their 4th string qb. We might have some problems if we were on our third.

[QUOTE=L.C.]
This week Kent lost to WMU by the score of 48-20, while Ball State lost to EMU last week 56-14, and to NIU tonight by the score of 63-17. Updating the data for the last 5 games, it now looks like for conference games:

Kent:
Buffalo 44.4
NIU 51.8
Miami 59.3
Ohio 25.54
BGSU 20.4
WMU 42.0
Conference Average 40.6, bad MAC level

Ball St
WMU 19.0
Akron 34.4
CMU 8.6
Toledo 30.4
EMU 27.0
NIU 26.8
Conference Average 24.4 = worse than Hampton

We can also do some comparative scores:
NIU 24, Kent 3
NIU 63, Ball St 17

WMU 48, Kent 20
WMU 55, Ball St 3

While Ball State played some good games early, they are currently really bad, and pretty clearly worse than Kent

I thought it was BA consensus that injuries were never an excuse? ;)

Regardless of how they became that way, Ball State is really, really bad right now. Looking at the scores, you'd think they just gave up after the W. Kentucky game. In any case, their defensive issues aren't the fault of the QB. In conference play, they are giving up an amazing average of over 53 points a game.

Oh... you're 1000% right. Ball sucks

My point is when you're down to a 3rd & 4th string QB, it's easy to give up on a season... which is what it looks like Ball did.
