This actually sums up what I was going to say quite well.  Never once have I used "sucks" as a derogatory term thinking it equates with fellatio.  Words change.  Language changes today as it always has.

At least we aren't doing a Wisconsin: "Diebler swallows."

That I would equate with fellatio.

Really?  If 'sucks' doesn't mean sucks, then use, for instance, 'stinks.'

Also, part of an education is sales.  ('Somebody is always sold something' in any transaction.)  And, in sales--which is to say in life--you are working with others.  Working with others is not so much about what you intend for them to see/hear/feel as it is about what they actually see/hear/feel.

And a lot of people who you may want to impress (or, at least, not offend) are not impressed when you chant or cheer using 'sucks' or 'bullshit.'

This is part of growing up...part of a college education (if you're doing it right).

Reminds me of the first round game in Cleveland between EMU and CMU.  Eastern fans would flip off Central players that committed a foul.  That was... striking.

I don't think the word "sucks" would have any effect on a movie rating. "BS" cannot be said on network  television and basically warrants a PG-13 rating. It's way different. "BS" is profane. I'm sure the kids at the elementary school  my wife teaches at use the word "sucks" and it's not going to get them in trouble (unless they're being mean to another kid). "BS" is an automatic trip to the office. Saying someone sucks is maybe a little bit mean, but no worse. Honestly, I don't think I ever considered "sucks" the way Monroe does. I never once thought about it having anything to do with that.

I really don't know anyone else offended by the use of the word "sucks." There might be a few people in my church who would prefer people wouldn't use it, but I've never heard this view expressed. My campus ministers at OU, one in his late 30s and one in his late 40s, used the word.

It's sort of baffling to me to find that people consider the word in any way offensive, except that maybe it's mean-spirited. I know there are some who would prefer all cheering to be positive. These people wouldn't want a player to taunted for an airball or any of those kinds of things. But this is college. As others have mentioned, there are far worse things said (especially about officials, who are not even the enemy). I just don't see the big deal about "sucks."

BS and sucks can't even be compared.

Sure, we don't want the section to be chanting all out profanities, there is obviously a line that does not even need to be approached, let alone crossed... but "sucks" is one of those ones where you have to step back and realize you're at a COLLEGE BASKETBALL GAME, NOT SATURDAY EVENING MASS. It is not viewed as profane by most everyone, and as mentioned, you can label it mean-spirited if you want, I guess.  But, it's a student section at a D1 college, of course you want to take some jabs that don't go over the line too far, like saying "you suck" when they foul out.  If you expect to go to a sporting event at any level above middle school and not hear at least something on par with "sucks", you should probably just stick to listening to Russ or Michael Reghi (depending on what's available for that particular game).  I don't mean to make it sound like "if you don't like it, stay home", but come on...

The O Zone has very rarely ever crossed that line, and they should be commended for that.  Instead, we nit-pick over a word that is no big deal whatsoever.

Honestly, it's sad that it has generated this much discussion (and I know I am a hypocrite for saying this, as I add to the discussion).

Right you are.   The former is normally directed toward some thing such as "That's bs" while the latter is often directed at someone such as "You s."  Either way I think most would prefer to hear neither.  As for the argument that that is what college students do, I'm not buying that as a justified able excuse.

..... Swing and a miss on my point, well for the most part.

I think Alan landed one square on your snoot.  Freedom of speech also includes the freedom to not say things that others might find offensive.  Now, I'm one of the greatest of First Amendment advocates, and I react very negatively every time they read that fascist statement about the kinds of speech that they won't tolerate at games.  In other words, you're free to say whatever you want (short of falsely crying "fire" in a crowded theater), but you are also free to be polite and courteous.  Try it sometime, you might find you like it.

Actually he was little more than insulting in an attempted shell. Now, in the context of this thread, the word sucks is perfectly placed. This is not regarding a place of civil discourse, in those cases, it is not to be used in my opinion. This is regarding its usage by 18-24 year old students, most of which will use it more if you tell them not to. They are perfectly within their rights to use it, which as the point i was trying to make, not about whether or not they should but that they are allowed to, and there is not much anyone can or should do about it. Also, you should follow your own advise, you might like it.

I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to say or imply with this last comment.  Do you mean I'm not being courteous by saying Alan "landed one on your snoot"?  If so, all I can say is you -- and most of the rest of the world -- don't understand my sarcasm.  Or, are you implying that I use the word "sucks" while saying others shouldn't?  If the latter, it's not true. If I ever used that word my wife would smack me across the face.  It's her number one no-no word.  We both remember the first time we saw it used in the current fashion.  It was the first year we were married and an encyclopedia salesman (even younger than we were at the time) came knocking on our apartment door in Cowtown, Ohio.  He said he wasn't selling anything, but just wanted to talk about some wonderful things we could get free.  After about a half hour of his pitch, I finally pinned him down and said to him, "You lied to us.  You want us to pay for this 'free stuff.'"  I then ushered him to the door.  The next morning, we found the word "SUCKS" scrawled over the name plate on our apartment door.  I don't think my wife liked the word before that experience, but that certainly reinforced her opinion about the kinds of folks that use that word.   When the Ozone uses the word, she often says to me, "That's crude."  Or, "I hate that word."  OK, I know, we're just old farts, so who cares.  Let me repeat, in closing, I'm all for your right to use that or any other word, but I also think it's appropriate for college men and women to show a little class.

That makes me laugh OCF. I took a writing class with your wife my junior year and one of her strategies she suggests we implement when writing essays is to write a "s*&^%y rough draft". Her words, not mine.

I do remember writing the F word in an essay for that class (it was a quote from somewhere else). She circled it and noted that she didn't appreciate it.

So I guess OCF, Alan and Monroe would be offended if the OZone showed up tomorrow in support of ICA and chanted "sucks" when Steve Hayes is introduced at this event tomorrow and speaks out against ICA: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=152271574828874.

I read this post to my wife, and she chuckled over it.  If you don't mind, could you PM me with your real name. Yes, I've never actually understood why my wife hates the one "s-word" and loves to use the other "s-word."  Her only explanation is that her maternal grandmother, who was a real saint, used the "sh-word" and, therefore, it's a good word.

JOOC, I noticed that Jeff McKinney (aka CensorMan) has edited your post.  Was it the f-word that he edited or was it my wife-approved s-word.  If the latter, I find it strange that the other s-word is sanctioned . . . and even encouraged on this board, especially when talking about Oxford Tech.  Yes I know that technically Jeff isn't censoring because his action doesn't constitute government action, but I like the sound of CensorMan anyway.

Well, to quote the Good Book, "For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven." (Ecclesiastes 3:1, NLT)  This might just be the appropriate time and place for such action!    (Please don't tell my wife that I said that.)

Dragon,

I respectfully disagree.  I think many of the actions of the moderators on this board are arbitrary and capricious.  If they can't stand the heat they should stay out of the kitchen and do something else with their time.  I've pointed this out on many other occasions.  Jeff is a friend, and I think he'll understand much better than you do, how I meant my remarks.  I don't know that it's in your job description to be the sensitivity policeman around here.  If Jeff is offended, I'm sure he'll say so.  In that case, I might offer an apology, but I don't expect he'll take it the way you did.

Really?  So you "self-censored" the f-word and Jeff "moderated out" the "good s-word."  I find this, actually, flabbergasting.  Maybe my wife's attitude about the two words has warped my thinking over the years, but I really don't understand the logic going on here.  For the record, I'm glad you didn't post the full f-word.

It was the s%#t word and not suck. Prime time TV still doesn't say that s-word so it will get edited here...the same rule that has been in place for the past 10+ years.

That would be primetime network tv.  So going forth if they say it on tv it's ok for this board?
