These are interesting times for "mid majors."

You can either have a unique niche like Belmont (concentrate on getting religious white kids who can shoot and play defense) or St Mary (50% of the roster is from Australia)...or you can take transfers from other D-1 programs such as UNC Wilmington who not so many years ago was a joke in hoops but is now #2 in the nation in the College Insider Mids poll. They have five transfers... several from somewhat big name programs and one from hoops royalty (the big UNC). Valpo? Four international players on the roster. Florida Gulf Coast has seven transfers from d-1 schools including ACC, Big Ten, Big Twelve...

So unless Saul has the frequent flyer miles to make lots of trips to Australia or Ohio becomes affiliated with the Southern Baptist church, beside recruiting some under-recruited kids in the midwest... taking some transfers from here and there (like KK was) is one of the ways to have a mid-major powerhouse consistently. And the Convo by itself is one huge advantage. St Mary's plays in a high school size gym and the kids from Australia don't care. But American players leaving an ACC or Big 12 or SEC program might care. Ohio should be getting some of the best transfers and not having to say "sorry, no room on the roster! Good luck at IUPUI or wherever"

The LaFerla twins have a better shot of playing more meaningful minutes this year than EDoz. Time to move on from this topic.

I'm good with the approach of leaving a scholly open for the transfer timeline in recruiting, but beyond that, we have a full roster until some says otherwise.

So when there are already 13 filled scholarships for 2017-18, exactly how do you suggest we get these transfers?

I think in a perfect world we are filling the roster with 4 year guys. Transfers and JUCO kids are such a big roll of the dice. We are actually in a really good place right now in recruiting.

Sr - 3
Jr - 3
So - 4
Fr - 3
Incoming - 3

That may slide a little depending on the outcome of Wadley Mompremier, Khari Harley and James Gollon but it's a good place to be right now.

The "leave one open at all times" is a good policy. With how many guys transfer at the end of every season? Some of them REALLY good players. With the Convo, etc... Ohio should have a good shot at a great transfer on a regular basis. Not to mention when a coach somewhere gets fired or moves up elsewhere and all the commits get a release. Equally top late bloomers become available when Coach Shmenge at Regional State Tech gets hired at Major Mega University.

Leaving one open at all times sets you up for problems if guys transfer or guys get hurt during the season. It's not just about getting the 13 on the floor in game time, you need those guys to practice. One less guy for practice means more guys are getting tired.

Not necessarily. In fact, it's Mick Cronin's normal practice to leave one open just like this. At the moment, he only has 11 guys on scholarship. It's risky if there are injuries, but leaving just one kind of makes sense.

Dozier is listed at 6'8", 218. I find it unfathomable that this kid can't give us 2-4 minutes per game of help on the defensive end in the paint. Does anyone know what's up?

Before certain posters blow you up for this...

I agree that it would seem to make sense that, especially late in a game when foul trouble is present, and it's easier to sub defense for offense, that Ellis ought to be able to give that small number of minutes you describe. He appears to be really athletic, which one would think translates to adequate defensive ability. But I'll counter all that by saying that in the BG game, in two minutes he had two turnovers that were unforced by bouncing it off himself. Obviously something isn't clicking, but man oh man, I'm with you: OUr bigs could really use those extra minutes and extra fouls from him.

That makes as much sense as anything. Has coach ever been asked this question?

Not again guys?? We have a better shot this season of watching Jerry Lebold play 2-4 minutes of meaningful basketball than EDoz. It's obvious to the coaches that he can't help them this season. #LetItGo

I never advocated for him to get more playing time. I just didn't know if coach has ever said "he just isn't ready yet" or anything to that effect.

We've got so few scholarship guys available this year, you'd have to think every player deserving of minutes is getting them. If they're not getting minutes, I think more time in the gym/practice is warranted.

+1

Loved watching Jerry hack his 5 fouls out, but he played hard and that was a talent defunct team after #33

I know you didn't. I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth. I've not heard anything from coaches on him. I can tell you I'll be holding that question for Bobcat caravan in a handful of months. ;)

Well I called this in the Buffalo game day chat. *pats self on back*

At this point in the season we are what we are and we're going to play who we've been playing.

PUT IN BRIDGEWATER!

Then in all seriousness with a win tonight locking up the #2 seed we've had an outstanding year considering we are without the services of several scholarship players either due to injury/inability.
