If I had the time to go to a million different places to shop, I would go to Kroger for bulk items, Fresh Thyme/Whole Foods/Trader Joes for produce and then Dollar General for household items. I unfortunately do no have the time so Kroger it is.

In our area bugs on the front of our vehicles can be a problem. A friend I ride with, who is a trucker, put me onto a general purpose cleaner, which, I can only find at Dollar General. It makes cleaning bugs from the front of the vehicles much easier. Our small town has two Dollar Generals.

So much hate for Dollar General. Strange. Is it because Dollar General serves poor areas? Offers market-leading prices on merchandise? Is frequented by lower-middle class and poor-class shoppers?

Kind of feels like Oxford, Ohio in here...

For me, it's not really hate. It's just the cheap, second-rate, low-quality perception that goes with a dollar store. It feels second-class (not that it really is; it's still the same bowl that GMAC sponsored). It's sort of like when multi-level marketer Advocare was sponsoring the Independence Bowl. The first thing that came to my mind was "pyramid scheme." (Note that Camping World is now sponsoring the Independence Bowl.)

Having defended Dollar General, I will say I'm surprised by their decision to sponsor a bowl, especially this level of bowl. My perception: typical shoppers at Dollar General are more inclined to root for "big name" college football (Alabama, Ohio State, Florida, Texas, etc). Those schools are not in line to play in Mobile. So If I'm in charge of marketing for Dollar General, my advice is either go big or go home--which is to say, sponsor a New Year's Day level bowl that could potentially host one of those teams, or don't sponsor a bowl at all.

I personally am waiting for my favorite, Waffle House, to step up to the plate (pun intended) and sponsor. Now there is a seriously misunderstood and quite frankly under appreciated restaurant.

Only football game on TV that night. Murica loves football.

Brilliant move.

I've seen crazier things happen.

During my senior year at OU, my girlfriend - later to become my wife Lynne - was a southerner. The summer after graduating and before starting my Army service, I flew south to visit her and her family. From Georgia we journeyed west through Alabama and Mississippi and north to Memphis and then across the river and southwest to Pine Bluff, Arkansas where Lynne was born. Along the way I learned of a southern grocery chain - Piggly Wiggly. Now, wouldn't that make for a snicker-inducing name for a bowl?

+1

Great story and interesting bowl name suggestion. :-)

Even better would be The Waffle House Gridiron Bowl.

First self-service grocery store in the country. Gotta Love The Pig!

Now you want to go full on South - We can start the Moon Pie Bowl. (though as an ex-client, I can tell you they don't have the cash).

Too bad the bowl isn't being played a week later. We could all stay in Mobile and watch the giant Moon Pie drop!

Are they still fully owned and operated by The Chattanooga Bakery Company? I wonder how many times McKee has attempted to purchase them? Is outer space big enough to have both Moon Pie and Star Crunch?

Greater Chattanooga does offer the world some tasty, low cost treats! Christmas Tree brownies are the best this time of year.

Glad to see corporate America continue to sponsor these Bowl Games. I could care less the sponsor. Mobile has been good to the MAC.

It could be worse-the Harris Teeter Grocery Store chain out of Charleston, SC could be a sponsor!

I was surprised to see The Lion's Den advertising on TV the other night. Imagine the swag bag if they sponsored a bowl game.

Kroger owns Harris Teeter now. HT is a great store but not quite as nice as Wegman's though.

I'm used to threads on this board getting hijacked by the usual Monroe vs. the world definition of what defines a "successful" program. I'm kind of enjoying this diversion about BA posters low-cost shopping preferences. I can't wait for the "which drive-in carry-out" in Athens is the best. The answer for me is Stop-N-Cop on Richland who was much more lenient in accepting my awful fake ID in 1993.

Back to the game, I like everything about this game except the date. A week later, and I'm there. I love the opponent and city. If both teams come to play it should be an entertaining game.

1. The one on West Union that was a combo car wash (Happy Cat, maybe? TBH, I don't know if it had a name) - The only time a clerk ever expressly told me not to show my ID.
2. Stop-N-Cop - They had an 18 for $12 special on 40s of King Cobra once, so they will always have a special place in my heart.
3. Dale's BP - For all those times when you can't go back into the bar but you're gonna need something to drink before you make it back home.

For a minute there I thought you were going to start talking about the Coolville Cool Spot on US 50. That was my main stopping joint for road snacks and gas to and from Athens.

Hey Bcat2 - just curious, what is your connection to OU football? Did you go to OU, are you from Ohio, are you related to a coach or player, did you play for one of the coaches? Just curious.

If you buy your cleaning supplies anywhere other than Dollar General, you're doing life wrong.

But saying we're not allowed to make fun of a bowl being sponsored by Dollar General is outrageous. Lampooning sponsorships of bowls is a longstanding tradition of college football fans dating back to the Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl.
