Joe, Greg Cook did play in Peden, but the game you are thinking of occurred on November 16, 1968 in Nippert Stadium. Ohio won the game, but what a shoot-out. Final score was 60-48.

I agree that for one day, it had to be Goddard.

Did UC's Greg Cook play in Peden? I know the Bobcats and Bearcats had a shootout and I think Cleve Bryant and he put up big numbers. I don't know if that was in Athens, though.

The shootout game was in Nippert.

Why can't he ever be in CFHF? I don't know of any off-the-field issues that would keep him out. Don't they sometimes go back and vote in players that were overlooked earlier? In his case, I would think that a reconsideration would be most appropriate because it is somewhat clear that his race was a factor in his not getting in "back in the day." He was, along with our own Cleve, a trailblazer, as not many blacks were playing QB at that time, and there was still some level of prejudice against African American QBs.

[Side note: Just a reminder that back in 1903-4, OHIO had what may have been the very first African American QB at a predominantly white university in one Arthur Carr, who later distinguished himself as medical professor at Howard University. This really needs to be recognized in some significant way. I have proposed a banner in Peden that would match in style the ones already there.]

Why? Gambling issue?

Didn't Toledo win some 35 straight with Ealey at QB?

I think Chuck Ealey's problem is that he played pro ball in the CFL not NFL. He was a class act and I met him when I was visiting friends in Portsmouth many moons ago. He was the quarterback for tiny Portsmouth Notre Dame High School before his stunning career at Toledo.

To be a member of the College Football Hall of Fame you have to have been on a "Major" 1st Team All-American honor. Chuck never received such an honor, so the only 3 year undefeated QB in College Football history is not even eligible for the ballot. Chuck was a Football News AA team, but they were not an accredited list.

So Chuck is forever barred from the ballot. There have been many efforts, and petitions, it's never went anywhere. Maybe some day? After all Drew Bree's is also ineligible.

And Chuck is a great guy, we played for the same High School Coach, you couldn't help but be of strong character coming from Coach Miller.

ND was not that tiny back then, and neither was Portsmouth.

Jason Taylor - good call. Missed it on Moss. I could have sworn he was in Peden once. Leftwich was though, and I'll stick by his name on the list. Outstanding QB, better competitor.

This is a fun diversion.

I'm glad someone else said Jonathan Goddard. He was a beast that day.

I assume it is Ben Rothlesburger. QB rules the world and he has to be the best one in terms of overall career. No?

(It is not Tyler Palko. That made me laugh. Sorry Uncle Wes.)

The best non-Bobcat coach is Urban Meyer when he was at BG, no?

Good thread:

Brandon Marshall was a freshman DB at UCF when we beat them 28-0 at Peden.

ECU QB David Garrard had a nice game in a 17-14 win.

Marion Barber III (and Laurence Maroney) ran all over us for Minnesota. TE Matt Spaeth was also on that team.

Two type of answers: Best player - e.g., Big Ben, Moss - that went on to show how good they are. Best performance: which play had the most dominating performance at Pedan?

I always forget they coached at Miami. Hard to beat Hayes 5 national championships and 13 Big 10 titles. Don't think Bo ever ended a season ranked #1.

So I gotta change it to Woody....if he actually was a head coached in Peden.

I'm interpreting the exercise as who was the highest profile college player to play in Peden not the best NFL standout. Great MAC players don't count because they aren't nationally elite players. When Pitt had Larry Fitzgerald they were all over ESPN and Palko was talked about in the media like a Notre Dame quarterback. That is why the Pitt game was so big on many levels with national implications. It was a small snapshot in time where Pitt was on the rise then WVU had the mantle with Slaton & White which is why they were able to get into the Big XII.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

Thanks, that's a great article. Here are just a few quotes from it, for those who don't click the link and read the whole article, that will give you a sense of the level of injustice involved in this case:

"Jack Taylor is an associate professor emeritus of ethnic studies at Bowling Green State University, and a former college athlete from the same period.

"He said that because black quarterbacks were very rare at the time, race might have played a role in Ealey being left off some All-American teams.

"'Given the climate at that time, it is certainly something to be considered,' Mr. Taylor said. 'You have to wonder if some voters just did not name Chuck Ealey because they were not ready to accept the fact that a black could play the position, and play it extremely well.'

"Because most of the electorate on those All-American panels from nearly a half century ago are deceased, that uncomfortable question will persist.

"There are a number of black quarterbacks in the College Football Hall of Fame - Major Harris, Andre Ware, Charlie Ward - but had Ealey been eligible for consideration and voted in, he would have been the Hall of Fame's first black quarterback. That distinction belongs to Doug Williams, who played at Grambling, a historically black college, from 1974-77 and was voted into the hall in 2001."

And then this, which I think really is a clincher of an argument:

"'If you put in place a rule that says that every guy who goes undefeated as a starting quarterback for three straight seasons will be considered for the hall, I don't think you'd open the floodgates,' Mr. Taylor said. 'I think there would be one guy - Chuck Ealey.'"

I surely hope that this injustice get rectified while Chuck is still on this side of the sod.

Toledo was literally undefeated for 3 straight seasons, including 3 Tangerine Bowl victories in Orlando. The attendance at Toledo home games was sold out during that time period. They put together 35 straight victories and were featured nationally.
