Notice the formation at the 1:17 mark of that recap, the play where Daz scored. That's a formation I haven't noticed before. It has two backs in the backfield with Vick, AJ and Daz, but it isn't the usual variation. In the usual variation, AJ moves up to the h-back position, where Heitzman often lines up. In this variation, AJ takes his normal place as the pistol running back, alongside Vick, while Daz lines up deep, behind Vick, in the I-Back position.

Thanks for pointing that formation out, L.C. I had not noticed that when I watched the game on ESPN3 live. Scoring with a two-back set I-formation. Now, that's old-school conservative football. I love it! ;-)

You apologists are not somewhat appalled that this finally happened after years of a number of us screaming for this at the goal line?

I may have missed a play or two of last Saturday's vidcast, but from what I saw, we ran the hurry-up for one---a single--play. That's almost weird. Not very effective use of that tactic. Does anyone else in the nation run it for only one play at a time?

Given your excitement over one play of a two back set at long last at the goal line, if you all ever saw true innovation and verve from an offense, you'd probably need medical help.

Over the years I've seen lots of innovation in offensive strategy. The craziest thing I've ever seen was the creation of an entirely new offense for a bowl game (back in 1973). The most recent huge evolution at Ohio was in 2011, when Ohio switched from the I formation to the pistol set.

I agree that this isn't major, just a minor change. I just pointed out it because it was different, and because I didn't notice it in the actual game, so I suspected most other people didn't notice it either. It's also different that what I've seen other teams with pistol sets do. More common is to put a running back on either side of the QB. Akron, for example, has a set with one on either side of the QB, plus an H-back.

To me it shows that the offense isn't stagnant, and they are trying new things. It may also show that Isphording is having an impact on the offense, and that it isn't just Albin. The other place where I think Isphording has influenced things is in the screen pass area, where we are seeing them used somewhat differently this year.

I'll keep my eye out for this set in the future, and see what they do out of it. I have my doubts as to whether it can be as effective as an I-formation with the QB behind center for straight power running because, if he takes the snap and gives to the "fullback" (guy beside him), the "fullback" doesn't get a running start, unlike if the QB is behind center. Now, I suppose that a direct snap to the "fullback" would solve that, essentially creating a quick trap. Pair a direct snap with an option look from the QB and the I-back, and you might have an interesting play.

Fair enough. Good call on a direct snap to the fullback--that should be in our arsenal. So should going directly under center, preferably with two backs behind the qb in a balanced way such that the D can't tell which is likely to get the ball...if the play is a run.

There's nothing wild and crazy about any of these things. I'd think that we'd use them (and the hurry up) to keep defenses off balance. All the more so given the long stretches we've had in which our offense hasn't done much.

Baseball pitchers don't only throw fastballs in one spot; they vary speed, location, pitch type, time between pitches, etc. Basic stuff.

I actually thought they went to the hurry up about four different times in the game, but without watching the game over, I couldn't tell you for sure. I know that they were all in the first half. It was probably good that they didn't use it in the second half because, when you aren't moving the ball at all, the hurry up would be a bad idea. That would just get the defense less time to rest, when they already aren't getting enough.

On the direct snap, I'm not envisioning that happening on a play when the QB wanders off, acting like he is audibling. I'm talking about it on a play when the QB acts like he got the snap, and then bluffs that he has it, and acts like he's running an option play, with the I-back as the pitch man. Running it that way it then becomes the identical play to a fullback trap in a conventional I-formation option attack. The fullback hits the hole fast while the linebackers are distracted by the apparent option play. This isn't anything crazy, either. All it is is a way to use that formation to mimic an under-center attack without actually going under center.

While we're at it, the blocking on Daz's run was very interesting as well, and Daz deserves credit for an excellent run. McQueen, playing LG, pulled to lead the play. There was no one there to trap, so he went on through the hole, and sealed the linebackers inside. Lucas and McCray were supposed to block the Defensive tackle to the inside, but Jamal Marcus, #34, wasn't having it, and burst between them, directly into the route of the run. Lucas, however, didn't give up on his block, and instead blocked Marcus clear to the other side of Daz's route. Daz had to stop for a second while two large bodies passed in front of him, but McCray, McQueen, and Heitzman kept everyone else sealed inside, so even with the delay, the lane was still open for Daz, and after breaking one tackle, was able to score.

Virginia Tech scored a TD against OSU by going right and having a receiver float left and was wide open for the score.

I was hoping that OHIO in that season opener watched the success of that play and perhaps they did as the TD to TE #81 Saturday was a reverse carbon copy of the play and was a thing of beauty!

Good call staff!

On the flip side; don't beat that Bubble Screen horse to death!

Saw part of Bowden's weekly show on STO. He doesn't do too badly. Talks a lot, over-explains things, but gives credit where credit is due to the opponent. The guy with him was a real homer and couldn't even say "Ohio." Biggest chuckle is that one of the sponsors is a funeral home that's "two blocks from campus." Maybe because campus is really dead.
