I am sure Y-City can appreciate this. I played with a guy at ZHS who was a QB for MU. Every Facebook picture I see recently has him in OSUcks gear at the games leading up to the title. How is that possible? A starting D1 QB sniffing jock? Sad.

I wonder if OSU fans make threads on their message board about how they hate OSU grads that like OU? Seriously? I'm so sick of people making big deals about this. I was born and raised in Athens.. Proudly graduated from OU and hold basketball season tickets.. I also like ohio state football.. Get over it.. It doesn't make me any less of a Bobcat.. Quit acting like whiny younger siblings.. It's not a big deal..

you seem to think that the reason some of us don't like OSU is rooted in jealousy or envy, or some other emotional shortcoming that we should just "get over". If that were the case then wondering if OSU fans behave the same way would be a valid point. But that's not what this is about. Sadly, I think you've missed the point all together, I encourage you to go back and re-read the comments regarding the dislike of OSU and you'll see that this has nothing to do with their success on the football field.

Mindblowing to me that alumni of a school cannot understand fellow alumni not liking a DIFFERENT school.

Then people wonder why we are where we are today...

Wow, you really don't get it do you? Like I have said before, I don't see any problem with an Ohio fan rooting for OSU. My problem is when they put OSU above the school they graduated from. This idea that all residents in the State of Ohio MUST like and root for OSU is what has caused us to be in the position that we are in. I root for all teams from Ohio, with more emphasis on the "smaller" programs. That's my choice. This discussion has nothing to do with you as you obviously put Ohio first. It's also impossible for me to act like a "whiny younger sibling" as we are in fact older.
Like others have said, just because we take a position contrary to the majority of the state, doesn't mean that we are somehow jealous.

Thanks for shedding some light on this... aside from the osu lawsuit and the century of arrogance in attempting to take our name, own our name and undermine us at every opportunity (but, yeah, get over it ) , there are other reasons to hate osu, but I do blame many of our own alumni. Lots of folks SAY they are Bobcats first, but what do their actions say?

How much money did you spend on buckeye shit this year? how many times did you post crap about the latest osu game? how big a a pimp are you all the time about ohio state?

And on the other end? Did you ever take any of that money and give to the OHIO Bobcat club? When did you get your last OHIO shirt or sweatshirt? When was your last visit to Athens? Did you buy season tickets to OHIO football and attend at least three games, which you can do for the same cost as one osu game?

No, OHIO won't ever win a national championship. I'm fine with that. I also prefer that our school never become one that has a sports "culture" because that minimizes what a great place it is altogether. But it would be nice to just see what our potential is, if we didn't have so many weak-minded fools who buy everything they sell in cowtown. Grow up and be your own person. Grow some balls.

True story that illustrates the problem that DFC references:

My wife's mother had a close friend whose husband graduated from OHIO -- way, way back in the day, before most, including yours truly, was even born. This gentleman was in the OHIO marching band and told me once that he marched beside Sammy Kaye in the band. That'll give you some idea of the generation we are talking about. After graduation, the subject of this narrative went to medical school at the University of Cincinnati. He then completed a residency at the Evil Empire and started practice in Cowtown as a pediatrician. He was, in fact, my wife's pediatrician as she was growing up. He followed OSU football very closely and had all kinds of OSU stuff around the house. I believe I did see one old and faded OHIO pennant somewhere in his house at one point. However, to the best of my knowledge, he never once came back to campus -- not for a Homecoming, not for a game, not just to see how the campus had changed, not to visit an old haunt, etc. When I talked to him a few times about OHIO he always said good things and seemed to think he had received a good education at OHIO, but his whole orientation and his real love was obviously for A&M. I did then, and still do, have a lot of trouble wrapping my head around his complete abandonment of his alma mater. This physician has now passed on to the other shore, but I'm afraid his story has been repeated numerous times in his generation and in other generations. Can we hope that more recent generations will do better?

This story reminds me of my time at Stanford. My classmates came from 31 countries. We were in residence, meaning we were quartered in a dorm. We developed strong ties to Stanford. One day at lunch, 7 or 8 of us were sitting at the same table. The subject of school allegiance came up. So we put on the table this question: To which alma mater did we feel the strongest emotional tie? It was unanimous: Regardless of our country of origin or residence, we all felt the strongest tie to our undergraduate alma mater. In my case, I have a third alma mater - a law school - and I have virtually no emotional tie to it.

I have been coming onto this message board for many years and I have posted very few times but felt that I had to comment on this topic. I am a very proud alumni of Ohio University. I also played football while attending Ohio. I was recruited by Knorr and his staff and finished my career under Solich. I am also born and raised in Columbus and I currently live there. I do not have an issue with Urban Meyer or any of the current players on Ohio State's roster and I believe most non-Ohio State fans don't have an issue with them either. The issue that most people have with Ohio State is with their fan base. And this doesn't pertain to every single OSU fan only some of them. A lot of Ohio State fans are just fine. Those fans were born and raised in Central Ohio or they graduated from OSU or they currently live there. Those fans cheer for there team every Saturday, they are knowledgable about college football and the game of football in general. These fans are ones I enjoy being around during OSU games and are fun to have a conversation with about college football. They are also respectful of other colleges and universities and their fans. The OSU fans I have a problem with are the ones who are arrogant, disrespectful, and unreasonable. These OSU fans have no idea about college football and only know that OSU is the best, everyone else sucks and everyone who roots for another college football team is wrong. The following conversation is one I have with OSU fans quite frequently and it kills me every time, it goes like this:

OSU Fan: "O your from Columbus, are you an OSU fan?"
Myself: "Ya I sure I root for the Buckeyes, I'm not really a diehard fan though. If OSU wins then that's great, but if they lose I don't really lose much sleep over it."
OSU Fan: "Well who do you root for then, do you have another team?"
Myself: "Yes, I root for Ohio University."

You should see the look I get from these types of OSU fans when I say this to them. They look at me like I'm kidding around or I have a 3rd eye growing out of my forehead. HOW CAN YOU LIVE IN COLUMBUS AND NOT LIVE AND DIE WITH THE BUCKEYES!!! These OSU fans cannot fathom the idea of living in Columbus and not being a diehard OSU fan. According to them it should probably be crime. I was at both OSU vs. Ohio football games that took place during the 2000's (one of which Ohio had a 14-12 lead w/ 7:00 minutes left in the 4th quarter which no OSU fan remembers). I could not tell you how many times some 45 year old man who was 5 ft 8in tall and 350 lbs came up to me to talk crap because I was wearing an Ohio University shirt. I'm 6'4 and have an athletic build and this out of shape, overweight man thinks he's better than me because he has on scarlet and grey and I have on green and white???

Is it okay to root for OSU? I think it is. Is it okay to root for OSU and Ohio, I think so too. But it depends on how you do it. Do it with class because a lot of OSU fans are classless. They think they are better than you because they are OSU fans and you root for someone else. I know OSU just won a national championship and that makes them the best team in college football. However, success can make people act one of two ways. They can be humble about it or they can be arrogant. Unfortunately too many OSU fans are arrogant and thats why people hate on Ohio State.

This is a great assessment and hits the nail on the head about why this is so frustrating! 99% of OSU fans couldn't give two craps about OU, yet if I don't worship at the Shoe like it's some kind of a holy shrine then I become some kind of a weird, whiny, crazy fan with a Napoleon complex! I agree 100% with you that you can be a fan of both schools, but do it the right way!

+10,000,000 wouldn't be enough pluses for your whole post. But I wanted to highlight the above especially, because I had a similar experience with a 12 year old that same game. The arrogance starts early.

Yeah, but doesn't that happen at Browns games too? And Steeler games? I think most big time programs have obnoxious, passionate fans that belittle the opposing team's fans. I caught the same crap at both OU/Ohio State games, but I shook it off because I feel like if the games would have been at Peden and I would have been wearing Ohio State stuff, more than one person would make a rude comment to me.

It's qualitatively different. I've been to many away venues and the way the fans treat you as an inferior species is at level all its own. It's not all the fans by any means, but a significant number. Some of my proudest Bobcat moments were being in St. John Arena twice when OHIO beat Ohio State. Many of the home team fans looked shell shocked after those defeats -- particularly the first one back in the Snyder Era.

And this reminds me of walking out of the stadium at Penn State after beating the Nittany Lions on a very emotional day for them. I was stopped in the parking lot by many PSU fans who congratulated me (like I did something) on how well OUr team played, wished us luck the rest of the season, and in many cases offered me a beer at their tailgate. It happened so often, when I got to the tailgate of Penn State people I know, I asked one of them if they are always this way or if it was the result of the "problem" they were trying to recover from. He said something like this, "Of course we have a few fans who are jerks, but a vast majority of us get along with all the other team's fans except for one. Those fans from Ohio State are real a**holes."

Game, set, match.

Had a similar discussion maybe 10 years ago while on vacation on the NC Outer Banks. Our neighbor that week was a senior citizen Penn St. fan. Picking his brain, I asked him who are the best/worst fans in the Big 10. After stating that he's seen PSU play at every Big 10 stadium at least once, he answered without hesitation, without doubt, that the worst are o$u fans.

I was at a PSU / OSU game in 2003 and abused during the game for wearing an OHIO sweatshirt and a hat of a local establishment that had Athens, Ohio on the back, the abuse was about being from a school without a real football team. Made walking out of PSU when we beat them that much sweeter, just wish I sat next to and in front of the same assholes.
