One other thing I noticed about that 2 deep is DE. The top 2 on both sides are lean, with Basham at 250 lbs. the biggest body. Laseak, slotted to start on the other side, is only 236 lbs.

I thought maybe Kuhar would break into the 2 deep, and the roster shows him much bigger (275 lbs.) than the top 4. There was a little bit of speculation that maybe he would switch to TE (Heitzman's addition probably takes care of that need), but I wonder if they are working Kuhar inside at DT instead.

By comparison, Sayles is only 268 lbs., and he's moved inside.

Keep in mind that Ohio doesn't publish accurate weights, for whatever reason. I don't know if it's because they don't have the manpower to do it, they don't care, or if it's because they don't want the foes to know, but the last time anyone's weight changed on the roster was Spring of 2013, and that is 2 1/2 years ago. Thus, we really have no idea...

I do believe Kuhar will end up at DT, not DE, though. I also think that the DE depth chart will likely change when Kevin Robbins gets added to it. Remember, he's a JUCO transfer from Iowa Western who was added to the roster over the summer. He's 6'4", 265, and we might also see Demetrius Colbert play at DE as a true freshman. Another possibility is Chalmer Frueauf, who came in as a DL, but who is currently listed as a 6'3" 235 linebacker.

Frank said today in Cleveland at the MAC Preseason meetings that Quarterback play will be critical to our success. It makes me think that it is not shored up yet and a question in his mind as far as what to expect from Vick/DJ.

Some people apparently had trouble reading the pictures of the depth chart, so I thought I'd help by typing it in here.:

LT - McQueen RSr, Lowery So
LG - Lucas RSr, Garrett Alcorn RSo
C - Powell RSr, Pruehs So
RG - Wood RSo, Anderson So
RT - Watson RJr, McCray So
TE - Mangen Jr, Morgan RSo
QB - Vick RSr OR Sprague RJr
RB - Ouellette So, Patterson Sr
WR/F - Reid RJr, Walker So
WR/X - S.Smith Jr, Brunis So
WR/Z - Cope RSo, Sawyer RSr

DE - Basham Jr, Smart RSo
DE - Laseak RJr, Berger RFr
NT - Tautuaiki SR OR Purdum RSr, Aloese RSo
DT - Sayles Jr OR Purdum RSr, Porter RSo
MLB - Poling RSo, Grillot RSo
WLB - B Brown RJr, C Moore RSo
SLB - J. Johnson RSr, Daugherty RSo
CB - Layton Sr, Bass RSr
CB - Wells RSr, Brunson So OR Fox RFr
FS - T. Davis R Jr, Macer RSr
SS - Jones RSr, Nelson So

Kicker, Punter, and Long snapper do not appear in the pictures of the depth chart that Arkley tweeted.

It appears that there will be a three man rotation at the DT spots. Sayles will play the DT spot while Tautuaiki plays NT, and Purdum shares time at both.

A name that hasn't been mentioned, either as showing up for sure, or as being absent is another late addition, Addrell Taylor. I guess there is a roster out, since Arkley has seen it, so they'll probably update the version on the web before too long.

Another Nebraskan for the defense. Copied from the OFR.

43 Taylor, Adrell LB 6-1/205 FR Omaha, Neb./Millard North

Yes, he's on the roster, though I didn't see him on the eDirectory. Meanwhile I can find Marcus Brunson on the eDirectory, but don't see him in the roster, which I presume is an oversight, since he's enrolled. I guess there are a few things still left to sort out. I'm also guessing we won't see Jeff Christian or Deontai Williams this fall since they aren't on the roster, but who knows?

Re: additions to the roster....

I saw a name on twitter that I didn't recognize and confirmed he is on the roster. Jake Ready, OL out of St. Ignatius. He's listed at 6'5", 295.

Is this new or did I just miss it previously?

Several late additions were mentioned about a month ago by Arkley, and briefly discussed in this thread: http://tinyurl.com/nmorezy

Hey Garrett Alcorn. Way to go. Had to be someone new break through. Have a great year. Glad to have you in line behind Mr. Lucas. 2016 just got better.

Mr. Wood. So glad to see you back on the depth chart. Guess that old candle lighting thing works. The RBs just got better. Again, so good to have you back.

According to Arkley's story today, Carpenter is ready to go: http://www.athensmessenger.com/sports/ohiouniversity/carpenter-defers-a-career-to-pursue-a-dream/article_5efdf904-16e7-5b4b-bc13-c9990d744d23.html

I keep reading stories like this about the young men Ohio recruits. They are time and time again great student/athletes. Crutch, now Carp is another. Bachelors in three, Masters already in his pocket. Two star recruits with more heart than the silly recruiting services can measure. Student/Athletes who seem to love Athens and being a Bobcat, who will "bleed green." I am sure the reason coach Solich and his staff picked and stay at Ohio is because they have the freedom to recruit the Crutchs and Carps who are such a pleasure to work with, who are winners on and off the field. So glad the Ohio coaches recruited this young man. So glad Ohio's precious resources are being so wisely devoted to student/athletes like Carp. JMHO.

It sounds like he's ready to play, and that he really wants to play. I hope he has a great season, and an injury free one.

I don't think this situation is set in stone. Christian seems like he could be in Athens very soon. Williams' story isn't done yet either. These situations tend to play out longer than many ever believe initially possible.

Closers from deep
Safety is the other spot defensively where the Bobcats have some questions. Nathan Carpenter and Blake Scipio have battled injuries much of the past two seasons, and Ohio lost two starters at the position in the form of Josh Kristoff and Thad Ingol.
Captain Devin Jones and junior part-timer Toran Davis are the leaders to start, but the Bobcats will be looking for more options there. Sophomore Kylan Nelson is like to get a lot of work.
Ohio brought in three freshmen defensive backs, and have potentially two more who may arrive at some point. Solich said safety is one spot where freshmen could have an immediate impact.
“We may play some young guys at that spot, maybe some true freshmen. We have talent there to bring them along,” he said.
