Totally agree. The lighting upgrades are very noticeable. I was hoping speakers came with it. One thing at a time I suppose.

Save the intro videos for Miami and Akron. Everyone else, let the band play something inspiring.

Sometimes I wonder about this line of thinking. Short of playing Stand Up and Cheer, which they already do, what is the 110 going to do that's going to get The Convo "pumped up"? I'm being serious.

Fair enough. Lights out with a video is a few minutes where I get to sit down and relax, or hit the concessions, or make sure my kids have what they need, or maybe hit the bathroom. Of course, I'm old.... and no fun.... But, I do stand and cheer during games....

I'm not suggesting "old" people (define that from your own perspective - I'm feeling old more and more) don't cheer, because they do. And I'm not suggesting the 110 isn't a vitally important part of the experience in Athens, because it is. I'm suggesting it's not always what everyone wants to hear at every minute to get them pumped up before/during a game.

If it were me choosing the videos, pre-game music, in game music, etc., I'd find a way to survey all ages of students and season ticket holders and ask them what the preferences are and go from there. To the point of this thread, I'd guess no one would find the current pre-game to be something that gets you "pumped up" or excited prior to tip off. I always thought in recent previous years that the intro videos accomplished the excitement.

And to reiterate the point I was making, that should be a priority in choices made for the mix of videos, music, 110 music, and promotions throughout the game. Getting people into the game creates fun, creates home court advantage, and along with winning, sells tickets. I would assume the goals of the staff in The Convo are 1a) to win, and 1b) to sell tickets.

I think the only reason we have the video is to give the lights time to come back on.

Believe it or not playing the right music at the right time is harder than it sounds. You need a sports mentality and a dj's talent. Sure some songs are scripted tradition like Stand Up and Cheer at the 8 minute mark in the second half. The problem is the show flow. If we force the other team to call a time out after a great run or thunder dunk and the show flow calls for a promotion, the promotion sucks the wind out of the Convo and destroys the naturally created momentum of the game. The show director needs to know instantly when to call for a song by the sound man, a song by the band or to just let the promo roll. It's not an easy task.

I am not 100% sure what was wrong with the Kanye song from the past few years. I mean...you don't have to like Kanye to know when it plays to clap with the beat. The songs this year (no matter if they or loud or crappy speakers or whatever) do not have a consistent rhythm that essentially tells people how to cheer in unison. I think the actual video quality is fine, but they are trying to reinvent the wheel with the pump up song. Just get everybody clapping and involved.

I agree with Alan and Tim. Alan, because I acknowledge it's a difficult balancing act choosing songs, allowing for the 110, and allowing for the promos. But it's a balancing act that needs refined, and I guarantee somewhere in the cast of students, residents, and faculty in Athens exist a few people who can make it work, and well. I'm only critical of THIS year really. In the end, I want OUr experience in The Convo to be better than any other school in Ohio, and I think it can be easily. That's why I get would up about this stuff.

I agree with Tim because there have been times in the past that the game day audio was spot on, so why go to new music all the time? Just re-mix the video to include new faces in the program. Show Mo dunking over people in the dunk contest from pre-season, or some big alley oops. If you want to share program history, the time for that to play isn't when the lights go off, it's during warm ups or at half time.

And still a bad stereo system. On a side note we got there with 5 minutes to game time and starting down the steps from the Rohr Room the music was deafening. My daughter talked to Drew from the obc and he called the guy on the board to turn it down. Will someone ever get a clue as to the audience for the music? Average age today in the arena was north of 45.

When we walked in the arena, there were folks literally covering their ears. I'll stop crying when the Convo becomes more customer friendly.

The Convo wasn't made with acoustics in mind. Sounds that are deafening in one spot can be almost silent a few feet away. So if you want it to be more "customer friendly" in that sense, you're going to be waiting a long time.

But if you're continuing your old saw about music choice, get over it already.

They actually played a bunch of Christmas music today so it's not about the music. When they put that Bose system in years ago, it was state of the art. It's now a worn out system. After going to Kent for the Yale - SIU game, it became even more clear how bad our sound system is. Sound, video, the product on the floor all make the game experience. We're very short on the first two right now.

I've got to agree with Alan. When I was at Madison Square Garden for a game they played a lot of classic rock playing on the tradition rock performances. The Convo could do the same.

Music has to be a mix of old and new. There are plenty of rock songs that work, but you have to grab some current music, maybe a few "harder" alternative tracks here and there when it fits the mood, and keep it fresh (switch some out every few weeks, have a few rotations, etc.).

Instead, we just play our "Jock Jams" CD from the mid 90's year after year after year with a smattering of current stuff.

I paid closer attention to the music at Saturday's game than usual, given the recent mentions on here. Everything was magnified Saturday because of course there was no 110 with students gone.

What I noticed was a pretty good balance. Probably a bit more hip-hop and rap than I would prefer (because honestly, I detest that). But there was a lot of classic rock and some Christmas music too.

At the end of the day, players and students are going to want the modern stuff. Most of us are going to want classic rock and oldies. So inherently, someone won't be happy.

A long time ago, it was explained to me that the Convo was indeed made with acoustics in mind. and that the porous wall surfaces were evidence of that. At the time, a state of the art sound system (for 1995) had just been installed. You should have seen the speakers before these ones. It's more likely the speaker quality has just deteriorated over 20 seasons and it's likely inconsistent. That said, of all the things the Convo needs, and Ohio athletics needs, speakers are fairly low on the list. But they might represent low hanging fruit at this point.

As you walk around the inside of the Convo bowl, there are a lot of dead spots in the audio. It can go from insanely loud to barely audible. If it was built with acoustics in mind, the speakers installed were atrocious.

I think most of us know it's the audio system more than the acoustics. At some point, I'm sure that will change.

This contributed to the snooze fest. At one point, after a few good possessions and momentum swinging Ohio's way there was a timeout and a slow, dull, country-esque version of jingle bell rock was played. ZZZZzzzzzzzz.

But hey, Santa was there and we won.....

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

Here's an example, as Alan said, of how well timed music can be useful in a game during timeouts. Use the same stuff most of the time, and it becomes routine.

Terps students clearly have this stuff down!

We have a great band and hearing them is a big part of coming to a football or basketball game. The kids and everyone else are too wired in to their gadgets and playlist. Coming to a game should be a different experience, not something scripted from a DJ. The flow of the game dictates how excited people will be. Sometimes it just doesn't happen. Call it retro or old school, but it works. I'm also in favor of the organ at baseball games.

This exactly what I'm saying giacomo. It's not that we play song X after every dunk, it's that a good sound man has y number of songs that he/she plays after a dunk depending on the particular dunk, time in the game, score, etc. As others have acknowledged it's not easy and takes real talent as well as an understanding of games and momentum.

As for the speakers, when they put them in, they did sound great. Not any longer.
