I think Frank will turn out to be more like Bill Snyder at Kansas State, except we will be smart enough not to force him to retire only to hire him back a few years later. He's got things improving again after a rough two years. Watch out MACC here we come! Contrary to what some on here say, I think our talent will prove over the next three years to be the best in the MAC. I'm not talking about the about the number of rating-service stars coming in, but the talent shown on the playing field and the talent recruited by the NFL after their college careers are over. I suspect, for instance, that Basham, Poling, Blair and Cope may be NFL draft material in the future -- just to name a few.

OCF, I am with you on this one...BUT:

We need to have a quality QB. Just like the NFL it all starts and ends there. For us, when TT and Vick have been healthy we have been fine. I must say, I don't like this offense because over the last few years too often our QB is not healthy. I don't remember this with Everson, Bowser, Theo or Boo.

One other item of note...maybe i missed it previously or maybe we didn't do it but #82 was the lead blocker a lot vs Miami. And, it looked like we took a book from the Belichek playbook by giving him great angles to block people. So, you don't have to have a 2 back set if you do that kind of thing!

All in all, I'd rather be running a Pro Style offense to keep the QB healthy. Maybe that is what Duckworth will bring us...if he can play! We'll see.

I agree, Casper, that I'm not crazy about our QB situation. I think Vick and Sprague can improve and be OK QBs, but I'd really like to see a bigger QB with more passing ability. We've had NFL-caliber QBs in the MAC -- Pennington, Big Ben, Leftwich, Frye, Batch, etc. Why not OHIO?

Note that this is the third time we've agreed on something in the last 48 hours. Is the Apocalypse approaching? ;-)

The QB's, and the class they will be next year
Vick 6-1 195 RSr
Sprague 6-1 200 RJr
Windham 6-1 214 RJr
Maxwell 6-3 215 Fr
Duckworth 6-3 215 RFr

Both Duckworth and Maxwell are NFL sized QBs. Windham appears to be a better passer than Vick or Sprague, but missed a lot of time due to off the field issues, and is behind them as a result.

The way I see it, both Vick and Sprague will be significantly better next year than they were this year, with another year of experience. If one of the others can improve enough to take the job from them, so much the better. Either way the QB play will be improved next year.

Well, so far Solich's staff has provided a succession of QBs who, according to the record book, have provided Ohio the best play on record. Scott, Jackson and Tettleton 3, 2, 1 in career completion percentage. Same group 2008-2013 have provided seasons 1-6 in the record book for TDs per season. 28, 21, 20, 19, 18 and 18. The 2014 team total is only 11. Eleven is below Ohio's recent standard and that is obvious. I expected we would miss Gdowski, but, not this much. Coach Isphording needs to get busy. Gdowski might become available again shortly. I would take him back in a heartbeat.

It's not really fair to compare the QB's of today, running the spread, with the QB's running other, prior offenses, such as the triple option. A better comparison would be just to compare overall offensive output. This year was clearly not up to the prior few years.

Clearly, hence the comparison of 11 TDs to the recent six year standard of 18 or better.

OCF this team did better than I thought they would. Played hard and never gave up. I really thought kent and Miami would beat us. Better qb play will pay dividends next year. Hopefully everything else is in place.

I have to say the QB position continues to amaze me. It's no shot to our own guys but I see so many teams (good and bad) that find a way to get pretty solid QB talent.

It's been talked about many times on this board but how do we continue to not land a game changing QB with a big arm? It looks like there are more than enough out there.

Next year I would bank on Frank giving the nod to the upper classman. That seems to be his stance. It's not an unusual approach or belief. It happens in all sports at every level.

Vick and Sprague have had tons of game reps to improve and they are getting better. I would hope we get a bowl game just to make sure these young men get even more practice time and reps.

Is there some doubt Duckworth cannot stay healthy? He seemed to be more of a traditional strong armed pocket QB that other MAC Teams have over us.

Diamond Cat. A traditional strong armed pocket QB that Ohio has been missing for the pro-style offense it runs?
