Sagrin has Arky-Pine Bluff at #340 of 351 rated college hoops teams. So, yes, there ARE worse. But only eleven.

What are the true un-sugar-coated feelings about the prospects for this season from most die-hard Bobcat fans? Are they resigned to just having to watch a rebuilding process for a while? Sports fans have gotten pretty impatient in this "microwave" fast paced world - can they take it with a grain of salt for a however long it's going to take? Just curious.

It's a coach's first year and the second coaching transition in four. I expect there to be a lot of inconsistencies and bumps in the road.

That is certain. You seem to be taking it in stride, but what about others you follow on twitter, run into at the whatever... how are they being about the realization that if a team can barely beat #340, it might be quite a process to get back to even average in the current NCAA basketball climate with tons of great athletes pouring out of high schools every year contributing to mids such as Richmond and Northern Iowa [as an example] being currently ranked higher [Sagrin] than traditional mega-power Indiana.

Not a lot of statistical power in the sagrin ratings this early in the season. Pine bluff is still not expected to be a good team, but saying that they are precisely #340 in the country smacks of false precision (not to nitpick your post, it's just a pet peeve of mine)

To be fair, Real Time RPI has them at #281. However they did play another MAC team and lost by 32. And they lost to High Point College (wherever that it) by a dozen.

I think the point about UAPB stands. The question remains: how will the fans be about this season? At least is there a consistent viewpoint about will they take it philosophically and be patient, will they freak out at some point after a particularly bad game, etc.?

This question is more related to fans than the actual team itself. Obviously the team will have some struggles this season. I always found it interesting to see how fans deal with rebuilding phases.

This summarizes the MASSIVE overreaction to our sloppy start very well.

We play VERY poorly/sloppy/bad basketball against #340, and all of a sudden the basketball climate is too much for us to compete with mid-majors like Northern Iowa and Richmond??????

Northern Iowa and Richmond ARE two VERY solid mid-major programs. I'm a fan of what both of those programs are doing. I think they are both in the highest tier of mid-major basketball.

NEWSFLASH: we beat BOTH of those programs just last season!

"it might be quite a process to get back to even average"
This program is well ABOVE "average" right now. Saul came into a program with a pretty stocked cupboard of talent. Those great athletes pouring out of high school every year have contributed to mids such as Richmond, Northern Iowa and OHIO.

...

We haven't shot well and we have turned the ball over endlessly. Yet we are still 2-1. I think it is a testament to the talent level on this roster that we can play like garbage and still win games.

We knew coming in we had a couple very talented players. We also knew our depth was questionable and unproven. That was a HUGE question coming in. We haven't looked good, but I am actually more excited about this season now than I was a couple weeks ago. Why? Because it is clear that some of our unproven pieces (RT, Laster, Wadly) have the talent level necessary to contribute immediately.
This team has the pieces to be very good. We need to develop chemistry and run the scheme as it is designed. When the learning comes together with this talent, we are going to be very tough to stop.

I've seen crazier things happen.

High Point is in North Carolina and is pretty decent. They won that tournament in Hawaii where they beat Pine Bluff. They also have Athens native Eric Gabriel on their coaching staff. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Bobcats and High Point play in the next couple of years bc of this connection.

The expectations of some this year are too high, but I don't think it will take long for us to get the machine going and return to where we've been, a perennial top 100 program and a threat to make noise in March.

Have to agree JSF. The tough part is that we have two point guards and that will hold us back until one of them accepts the role of 2 guard. Until then, who knows what will happen. Right now it's a "no, you do it, no you do it" approach.
