Rodney Bryant
Jack Goldsberry
Bubba Lichtenberg
Kahim Maxwell
Grant Gregory
(young man went to VMI, name escapes me)
Joey Burrow
Trae Williams

This is the past 25 years

In addition there have been many walk-ons who have earned playing time on special teams in this period.

Interesting list. Which ones have no relationship to an Ohio coach?

Grant Gregory (QB) graduated in 2004 and received a scholarship to Indiana before transferring to Kansas State and, I believe, finishing up at South Florida.

This class though..I can't remember anything like this for a local team.

Thanks - no interest in walk-on names, but someone give the poor kid that went to VMI a name

Now let's talk Luhermans - identified as recruited as "athletes" on this board, but let's get some clarity. In recruiting, "athlete" generally refers to player that is simply a fast, play-making player - returns kicks, runs reverses, just figure out how to get them the ball types. Desmond Howard was the prototype. These guys are not that. Fine athletes I'm sure, but they are not "athlete" as much as good players we want to find a position for. Project three years out, when they have time under their belt - positions for them... I'm hearing DE, TE, WR.

Per Ohio Football twitter account, both projected to be TE. https://twitter.com/OhioFootball

One question, do grayshirts sign any letters of intent, or is it more a verbal thing? I'm guessing they sign something, given that coaches are now talking about them.

Calling someone an "athlete" is simply saying "They have ability, but I'm not sure what position they will play".

So we gave away two scholarships to some local kids with no other offers?

And of course, The Kicking (and receiving) Green brothers. I am almost positive that both Mike and Dave were Ohio scholarship players. Steve I am not so sure about.

Quite a family. At one point, Dave was kicking for Tampa Bay in the NFL, Mike was a wide receiver and kicker for Ohio, and Steve was kicking for Athens HS.

Todd Snyder, Athens, scholarship from Ohio
from the wayback manchine...
Hubert Bobo, Chauncey-Dover, scholarship to TOSU

I will go out on a limb and say one of these guys will work out.

Injuries may stifle one of them...but damn....6'4"-220 with great6 hands and speed!!

Burrow is great but someone had to catch the friggin ball.

I saw some one handed catches....I saw tight end material outrunning people.

Works for me.

Wow! You're really dating yourself...Hubie Bobo played way back in the '50s. He was a backup running back for the Buckeyes, then played a few years with the New York Titans of the old American Football League. (I guess I just dated myself too. :))

Nick Toth, current Defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Fresno State, was from Athens and played for OU. I'm not sure scholarship or otherwise, but he wasn't mentioned yet.

Not to mention Matt Goodwin, one of the current coaches at Athens had a very good career in college. Just not at Ohio.

Aren't greyshirts given scholarships? What part of my post was incorrect exactly?

Two others come to my ancient mind:

John Grogan -- Michigan State
Bill Greer -- Northwestern

Both Athens High School graduates. Grogan in the 1960s and Greer, I think, was in the late 1970s. Those of you who took radio-tv classes, Greer was Archie Greer's son. John Grogan was the son of the Athens police chief. His nickname in high school was "Chief." I don't know how much Greer played but Grogan got lots of game action at running back.

Te answer is yes. We gave greyshirts (in essence 2016 scholarships) to two local kids. One appeared to have an offer from Ashland. The other had no offers that have been made public.

Why do some appear disturbed by this question and the honest answer?

Two quick question on greyshirts. Bouncing on the internet, it appears greyshirts are not allowed to practice with the team, in essence are not part of the team for the fall semester. So these two are not playing or practicing until spring ball 2016. Is this correct?

They do not have set positions. WR? TE? etc. Shame they can not spend 15 months working on technique with position coaches.

Question 2 - from both player and institution. How binding are greyshirts?

Very true, but that was 40-50 years ago. If you are going that far back, AHS has had some amazing athletes.

With apologies to Billy for going off topic, these posts remind me of two football players in the 1950s who played together (same class, I believe) at much smaller Grandview Heights High School in Columbus.

Ralph Gugliemi went on the star at Notre Dame as a running back and Tad Weed became the place kicker for osu. Both, I believe, played on national championship teams in college.

But most amazing was what they did after their senior season. Back then, a college all-star team would play the NFL championship team. My recollection of facts is a little hazy, but one year the college team beat the Chicago Bears with Gugliemi and Weed scoring all of the points for the all-star team.

So, in essence, tiny Grandview Heights defeated the mighty Chicago Bears. Go BOBCATS!

Additional interesting note: Weed invented the Weed tennis racket about 15-20 years later.
