I did see one alert Kentucky fan that noticed that while Ohio lost to Kent by 31 last year, they beat Kent by 3 this year, despite losing the turnover battle 4-0 this year, and wondered how that could be.  "Is Ohio really 34 points better than last year? Surely not. Or is Kent worse?" was about what he said.

Maybe its a little of both.  Kent is surely worse, without Archer and Nix, but Ohio playing as a team, and with Solich-like relentlessness makes a big difference.

I think it is a lot of both.

It seemed pretty clear to me Kent lacked guys who could do anything with the ball in their hands. At the same time, Ohio actually had more of those guys on offense despite all of our graduations...

Beyond obviously hoping for a W, the thing I really am curious to see is how our defense looks against Kentucky. I think this could potentially be our best defense ever under Solich, but I want to see another great run D performance before I buy into the hype. Also, turnovers. Forced.

I love all of the comments from UK fans about the "Cats" without an ounce of self awareness. I agree, the Cats will win!

Not having Durham also put them in a hole.

The whole team -- coaches included -- were up for Kent, mainly because of last year.  Hope they don't have a letdown this week.  Playing an SEC team should inspire them.

This comes from the benefit of hindsight, but I think that our performance against Louisville last year was very indicative of too much of our play last year:  We were there but we had no spark at all.  Nothing.

At the time, I thought 'Well, a loss is a loss so to get pounded by Louisville isn't particularly indicative..We just lost.'

Now, after seeing last season with it's preponderance of lackluster (to be generous) performance in our tough/key games (espec after stupd cow and 'kron), I think Louisville was who we were.

But it doesn't at all look like we're that kinda team this year.

GO OHIO!!!

I wish it was Saturday now. That's partly b/c after a 6 day football binge I'm starting to have withdraw, but mostly because I'm ready to see what this team really has in it. Can we match up with "SEC talent"?

And more than that, what does the rest of the conference have in it? Has BG;s defense fallen that far? Are NIU and Toledo going to keep scoring that much? Do I need to start hating Akron in football too? GAH! It's like the end of a cliffhanger TV episode, and I want the plot points resolved NOW!

This could be the game where having a deep but not particularly athletic wide receiving corps could hurt. I like this year's group when it comes to taking on MAC defensive backs, but you need the group the Bobcats had when they went into Knoxville about five years ago to go up against faster, bigger DBs.

I sure hope Ohio can run the ball because I don't see these receivers being able to take the top off against an (albeit lower-tier) SEC program.

As far as confidence goes, it's an odd game. It's not like the Louisville game, where it was apparent within five minutes that Ohio was outclassed on the field and Frank Solich just wanted to get the arms and legs and head inside the turtle shell and get out of the Bluegrass State before Teddy Bridgewater stepped on us. But I'm not as confident as I was going into the Penn State game, where everything was ripe for the picking.

This one kind of feels like that Illinois game back early in the Solich era where it would certainly be an upset but it won't take a fluke to win it. Ohio can line up and play Kentucky and win three out of ten times, I believe. It's just a matter of taking care of the ball and getting a few bounces to go their way.

+1

I don't remember hating the middle of the week this much in years past. I probably did, I just don't have the self control/memory/intelligence to remember how much I always get excited about football.

After a stellar debut in Kent, it will be interesting to see the week to week development of OUr QB.  How will he perform when the OLine cannot give him the protection they provided on every single play of the 1st game?  Will hurried throws become less accurate; will a sack or two result in a composure change?  How will his decision making fair when plays get busted?

Moving your team up the field and managing the clock in the final drive was great.  Another performance at Kentucky like Kent and that will be evidence that OHIO has a real gem.  Thanks Mr. Vick, it was so very refreshing to watch you operate in the opener--keep it rolling!

The line for this game has moved to OHIO +12.5 (for the moment). The last time we played an SEC team was 2009. We lost to Tennessee by 11. The spread was +21. (Fun Fact: UT lost by 10 on the road to Tim Tebow's #1 ranked Florida Gators the previous week. Then UT lost to #1 Alabama by 2 points on the road later in the season. Regardless, the team finished 7-6.)

I know nothing about this Kentucky team. But I'm highly skeptical that the people who do know about this Kentucky team know anything about this OHIO team. Like the Tennessee game in 2009, there's a high probability of a spread mis-match*. I'm not advocating gambling, but if +12.5 holds, this will probably be the most favorable Bobcat line of the season.

*I attribute the mis-matches to be driven by the results of the previous season in which 2008 and 2013 Bobcat teams underachieved with respect to the actual talent on the roster, and these bad results were magnified by the "SEC" factor unassuming parties place on the match-up.

With the current report saying thunder storms likely (60%), it could be a wet one on Saturday.

Rain won't be a problem.  Now, lightning - that would be a problem.  These early season games always have that potential and I have yet to see that situation turn out well for anyone.

You don't remember Kent State 06? 25 mph winds, rain, sleet , snow, hail, and a 40 minute lightning delay. Most fun I ever had at a ballgame.

Sometimes lightning can actually help a team.  In 1991 we had CMU at home over Labor Day.  It was Lichtenberg's second season, so 'nuff said.  We had two or three lightning delays that benefited our team by giving them more breaks so they weren't getting worn down so much.  We had the lead, but CMU scored late and we wound up with a 17-all tie.

Hello Bobcat faithful!  I've been reading the forum for sometime...can't get enough MACtion.  Always like the insight. Now I know I'm an Akron fan (don't beat up on me too much!) but I wanted to wish all Ohio fans luck this Saturday with Kentucky!  The MAC needs some good wins, and an SEC win would look nice on the resume.

Great-job knocking off Can't, knock off CAN'Tucky too while you're at it (please)!

Two really bad errors in the facts, we have not won 5 straight bowl games and our win over them was not the first time we played them. Where do these writers come from?

Ohio is 4-2-2 all time against Kentucky.

Stoops quote in that article kind of rubs me the wrong way.
Stoops wrote:

The implication in what he said is that Ohio is "anybody". Thus the logical way to complete the thought is "...not even Ohio".

Interesting analysis. Thanks for the link. The front 7 looked pretty solid but he's right, there were some gaps in the secondary on the plays he highlights. Let's hope the defense makes more improvements this week.

The ESPN message board for the game is laughable at best. So many UK fans really believe it is going to be a repeat of last week for them. Without their explosive RB, and now competing against a FBS foe, I hope OUr Cats come in and shock the world.., AGAIN!

Another MAC win at Happy Valley would look great also.  I always pull for the MAC in OOC games.  You might have an edge given PSU's long flight back from Ireland last weekend.  Good luck.
