I have my doubts about both.

Going into spring, our two most experienced position groups were the DBs and the DL, and those two position groups dominated the spring game. I thought our corners looked especially good, and the DL was playing really aggressive.

RBs did better than I expected, and OL worse. I wasn't super impressed with our receivers....I was really hoping Wilson would put on a show and give us lots of things to dream about over the summer.

As for the QBs, I thought Sprague looked better through the first few series, but Vick looked better over the balance of the game. Neither looked great on downfield passes, but that may have been b/c the DBs were locked in. I think both need to work on developing a go-to WR. Both looked a little lost when the OL would break down, and were inclined to make plays with their feet instead of with their arms.

I'd give Vick the slight edge over Sprague based on what I saw.

This may be why some are giving true freshman Duckworth at QB a chance to play.

Out of all 125 or so D1 football teams I doubt 1 has a freshman that can come in the fall and start.

No way did you see their returning Qb and the backup during the spring game. Its unbelievable hard for any player to come in at the D1 level and start at any position much less a QB and learn the offense while the coaches have to actually install and fall is not the time to teach..thats spring ball.

It happens once in awhile at a position like Corner, where there may be little difference between HS and college, but I've never seen it happen at QB. I have seen a QB come in, and be playing by the 10th or 11th game, when you have a Freshman QB with incredible talent, and the returning QB's weren't very good, but even then, the Freshman QB was running a simplified version of the offense.

Blitz is right - Duckworth will almost certainly not be the QB next fall.

In 2006 Dan LeFevre did not start but entered the game as a freshman in Central Michigans game against Boston College.  If he did not start all games I believe he started some of them and of course beat us in the MAC Championship game.

I agree with you in stating that Duckworth won't be starting next year.  I'm willing to bet he gets redshirted this fall.  However you don't have to look further than Baker Mayfield, who started at Texas Tech last season as a true freshman walk on for evidence that it has been done before.

I thought, Walk on, Brad Ellis played great at CB.   Thought he did a great job defending the pass and keeping the player between the sticks when catches were made.   His stats show 4 tackles but I know he had more but they were announced as tackles by the other player wearing the same number.     I say 7 tackles, 1 int and 1 deflected pass = pretty good day for a walk on or anyone else for that matter...

How many of us were frustrated last year with missed tackles.   He seemed to do a great job wrapping up and bringing the receiver down...

Wait a minute, I don't think Duckworth even played his senior year did he (injury?).  If that is fact, ain't no way he starts as a Frosh!

Texas A&M, Miss St and even Bama are considering starting freshmen quarterbacks.  It does happen - see Penn State,  But Casper is correct.  Duckworth sat out his senior year after knee surgery.  No way he goes from starting as a junior in HS to stepping in as a freshman.  Would love to see him get some reps though, so he is not idle for two straight years.  Any news on his rehab?

I said the same thing to L.C in a message about the defense. I think a different D scheme may have something to do with it....but still the guy looked All MAC.

Yes, the entire D really seemed like they were enjoying the new attack philosophy.

It happens everywhere. Chad Henne at Michigan. Aaron Murray at Georgia. Michael Vick at Va. Tech. Kellen Moore at Boise State. Jameis Winston at FSU.  Some even said Terrelle Pryor should have started Day 1 at Ohio State but Tressel went with Todd Boeckman, the seasoned QB. Freshman QBs who start Day 1 are not an anomaly. I'm not saying Duckworth is that type of guy, but freshmen start all the time.

A 17-year-old named Dontrell Jackson started at QB for a team based in Athens, Ohio.  In fact, if memory serves, he still was 17 when he started at OSU in a game that was 10-10 at halftime.

Only Henne of those guys was a true freshman. LeFevour, Murray, Moore, Vick and Winston ALL redshirted.

Kareem Wilson was a true freshman, however, along with Dontrell.

He was 17 and less than 170 pounds.  I remember at the pre-game tailgate that Grobe stopped by and made a joke of serving "Fruit Loops" cereal to his young team for breakfast.

Kareem Wilson was also a true freshman and Christian Hackenberg who did not participate in Spring Ball had a solid season at Penn State last year.

Braxton Miller has been a starter from almost day 1, he split time early on his freshman year but has been the starter since like week 3 of his true freshman year. Hackenburg at PSU and Henne at Michigan come to mind too of guys who had big years as true freshmen

Thanks for correcting me, Mike. I didn't realize that Vick or Murray were redshirted. Kind of had a feeling about Moore and totally forgot about Winston.
