and would someone please tell schaus that any new contract with any coach must include requirement that at Ohio University's option, if the coach leaves before the end of his contract, his new school MUST play a game in Athens within three seasons of his departure. This clause can only be bought out for $5 million.

won't be this guy. Looks like in addition to a new arena IUPUI AD Mark Moore (OHIO) has had a busy year.

for the record I have like Jason for years but his interview on the radio this afternoon made Kevin Ollie sound like a Rhodes Scholar.

Look, Dustin, Boals, Bacari, whoever, is NOT going to stay at Ohio when an ACC teams waves 3x or 4x salary in their faces. So take the best coach you can get to build the program without ANY expectation this person will stay more than a few years. That's why I favored Dustin a couple years back. If we had sustained success, he'd be gone, but then you go down the tree. Now we have no tree. I fear Jimmy C is going to leave the entire thing high and dry for a couple years. Good luck Schaus.

I understand your thinking here, but I think keeping a guy like Fuss around will ease the pain. Fuss has seen it all and knows all these guys. He's been there since the beginning. I don't think he's head coach material yet, but I think it's imperative he stays in Athens, no matter who the coach is.

Long time listener, first time caller...

How about Sonny Johnson as an outside the box hire? The guy has a lot of pull in NE Ohio.

He is more likely assistant material at this point but is someone to consider.

MY concern is the recruiting trail. Right now, losing ONLY Owens isn't the end of the world if the other three come and perform well. I agree it sucks to see a pair of top shelf kids leave because of a coach departing, but it's not the end of the world. The cupboard is not currently bare if that's all that happens.

A little more JC background...

Back when JC left KSU, he took KSU's top recruit to TCU: Ronnie Moss. Moss went on to be his star player for most of JC's tenure, but was also a head case that JC suspended a time or two and eventually dismissed from the team before his last season ended. Moss may have even had another year of eligibility left. KSU fans felt they dodged a bullet though were upset when Moss decomitted

And when Stan Heath took the KSU job in '01, he brought with him a former MSU recruit, a certain Antonio Gates.

This is the way things go. The reality is that players are recruited by coaches, not by schools. Schools will argue when coaches leave that recruits should not have the freedom to change their commitments.

Since WE are in limbo - let's get back to this thread and do what Schaus is probably doing. Putting together a short list in case it is needed in Dallas.

Is there anyone else besides Alexander and Holtmann that should be on the very short list. Alexander may be better working with the big men we have, but my gut tells me Holtmann may be more stay a bit longer.

Who else really?

Who else really is going to be someone like Groce. I am not into the recycling thing as those guys are not hungry enough. Holtmann is still hungry but guys like Jeff Meyer, Dane Fife or other Power Conference assistants have lost the edge. There are a few out there ... Darnell Archey, Micah Shrewsbury are good examples of guys on the rise. Even a guy like Brett Nelson is gong to be a good option if not this year in the next few. Hunger and passion need to come out in the interview process.

That's interesting. JS makes less than Frank. I had forgotten that. Yet, I don't believe he has complained in the least. I do remember that when we brought in Frank that McDavis was OK in offering him more than he (McDavis) was making at that time. I really like people who don't play the jealousy game.

I will echo what I think most of this board is saying. I think Chris Holtmann would be an excellent choice and proven winner. While some may think Ohio is a short stay for people like Holtmann that continue to rise in the coaching world I think he also provides good stability for the Ohio program. His and Groce's pedigree is from the same coaching tree of Paul Patterson who stayed at Taylor even when bigger and better options where available to him. I say make the search short and bring in a great coach and recruiter and get back to winning the MAC and respect in the midwest!

Schaus has hired either successful coaches or up and coming assistants, no apparent bias, but they all seem to have strong midwestern, mostly in Ohio, ties. I'm sure a lot of the names mentioned here will get looks. How about someone like Lamont Paris, or does the Dambrot association exclude him?

I'm sure Schaus has a list compiled, but I certainly hope a more thorough search is conducted. While I think Christian is a good coach, the whole process seemed rather hasty last time. Maybe this time he'll at least interview a second or third candidate? People can bullshit all they want, but this is the primo job in the MAC. Period. we have a right to expect a thorough national search or the AD that many seem to adore is not doing his job.

Haven't seen anyone mention Pat Kelsey. Born and raised in Cincinnati, assistant to Skip Prosser at Wake, former Assoc. HC at X, current HC at Winthrop. Currently making reported $175k at Winthrop.

Jim Schaus hired Gregg Marshall from Winthrop when he was at Wichita State. Also the Groce parallels you mention. Makes a ton of sense if we can get him.
