Marquette is a great job. In the old Big East, they had the largest budget in the conference, clocking in close to 8M.

Everything I've been reading has Christian as a serious candidate. It's been mentioned that he "played for Pitino" at Boston U., so it looks like they are trying to slap some lipstick on the pig. It's clear that more prestigious candidates are shying away for the many reasons mentioned in this thread. So don't be surprised if he takes it. And he should.

and now Owens has talked to JC while he's in Boston and is asking for a release from his commitment to Ohio??

I don't have enough hands to raise the number of middle fingers I need to adequately express myself at this moment.

So if a competitor of your company offered to quadruple your salary, provide increased exposure and give you access to increased resources to accomplish your job, you would be too embarrassed to leave your current company.

Well, its double not quadruple.

And yes, I would still be embarrassed. If I took over a successful team at a company, told them how committed I was to them...and performance slightly dropped off and then I left a couple years later...I would feel like fraud.

Pretty amazing considering the money they get from the shares the ACC distributes from the tourney each year. They all have to be a little pissed the cash cow was ousted by Mercer early.

Point being that with all the money they get in shares ohio is staying pretty competitive all things being equal

I figure that family will be Christian's #1 deciding factor. Money plays a huge role in that.

Maybe his wife and kids are extremely happy in Athens - have made good friends and enjoy the town, etc etc. It can be hard for everyone to pick up and move a few states away into a city. Kids don't always respond well to a move.

Who knows, I'm just spitballing here to pass the time.

JC has a pretty darn good situation at Ohio right now.

Good recruits coming in with a nice base of young and a couple veteran players. Potential to be the top dog in the MAC for years to come. A project he's been working on for a couple years. And the results have mostly been there.

Sure, BC is absolutely the better job. But basically pressing the restart button on the recruiting and building a program process to start again at a new program with a larger challenge and more pressure? Big challenge, but I guess that's what these guys live for.

And who knows how many assistants he'll be able to bring with him to BC.

At this point would you want Jim Christian to stay? He could have put an end to this a long time ago if his goal was to stay at Ohio.

I do. he's proven he's an excellent MAC coach and recruiter. As much as I wish he'd turn down any offer right away, that's just not realistic. He owes it to himself to explore any opportunity.

I doubt he stays. Too much smoke on this one. Sure most would like to see him stay, but the relationship with many fans will be quite different to say the least. That's based on the talk when he came here mostly. Anyway, one way or another the world continues to turn and life goes on. Always seems to be something going on to stir the pot.

college sports is quite a fickle thing, not totally analogous to most business situations. You usually don't have to worry about things like broken legs at the office.

Just back in Athens after a trip to South America -- Chile, Uruguay and Argentina -- and I'm greeted by this soap opera?  What a welcome home!  If all the rumors and half-baked reports are remotely correct (LOI rescind requests, especially) not only is JC gone, but his departure is being accomplished in the most destructive manner that I can ever remember at Ohio.  I'm still hoping that once the smoke clears we'll discover that things aren't exactly as they seem at the moment.  I think Uncle Wes has it right.  If he's gone, we can make the best of a bad situation.  Go OHIO!

 1h

Jim Christian's wife and kids might be traveling to Chestnut Hill for news conference tomorrow. That's what happened in Athens 2 years ago.

The other thing to remember if your a "JC has to do what's best for him..." apologist, is that JC was hired for the purposes of stability. He was a successful coach that had bombed at the next level, and returned to the MAC with his tail between his legs. We were all pretty disappointed when he was named coach (not the most exciting candidate to say the least) and the general consensus was that he was a Frank Solich style hire. We get a long term coach and he gets to enjoy the job stability that comes with the (relatively) low expectations of a MAC program.

Or so we thought. Instead we saved his large butt from being fired at TCU...and this is what we get in return. And I don't want to hear "but TCU was turning around...they had a great year before JC left!" They did that with transfers and the year after he left they won only two conference games! He didn't build anything there.

So yes, if I were JC I would be ashamed to leave.

I think it's unfair to say he bombed at TCU. They were actually on the upswing in wins under his watch, but I imagine he left because he felt TCU would drown in the move to the Big 12 and having to play Kansas, Texas, OK State, Baylor, etc.

I changed my comment to address your concern. He had some transfers that were graduating that year. The year after he left they were awful.

Jeesh.  Do you even follow college sports?  This is the life of a mid-major program.  Every coach is gonig to say this is where he wants to be right up until a life changing job offer arrives.

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

It may be unfair but I can point you to several boards that are saying the *EXACT* same thing at this moment

The longer this plays the more likely JC stays. Having met with BC over 24 hours ago, if he was the front runner the job would already be his.

He talked with them by phone first.  Didn't he visit them today?  Either way, I'm not really eager to have him back.  He's punched a lot of holes in the boat in the past 48 hours.

I was not happy with this hire to begin with. I admit Christian started to grow on me this year. He proved he could recruit and coach a little bit. But after all this I don't want him back. The damage has been done.

I'm just going to keep talking because I'm mad :)

Can you imagine what a sleaze you have to be to walk into these kid's homes (and I emphasize KIDS because that's what they are) and tell them how committed you are to them and to building something special...and then abandon them when the first decent job is offered to you?

That's where college athletics is today. $$$$$$$. I'm with Steve Hays...burn the whole thing to the ground. Its rotten to the core.
