I am not saying "no debt ever"...I am simply saying no debt is always better if possible.  It blows my mind that this is even a debate.  I realize this is quite a random thread hijacking of an extremely important issue so I'll try to stop...

If JC does accept the BC job, Travis Steele at Xavier would be a perfect replacement imo.  He's one of the best up and coming coaches in the business and is very familiar with Ohio U seeing that his brother was the head coach here. He would be able to recruit Ohio, Indiana and Michigan very well. Definitely a name I would keep an eye on if the job does open up.

Look at Gonzaga.  I wonder if Mark Few is feeling heat from the fanbase re not reaching the Sweet 16 since 2009?

For a midmajor like Ohio, it's great to reach the Sweet 16 and we should strive to get there again.  But it's a very infrequent occurrence...all the stars have to line up re:  lack of injuries, good coaching, a veteran mid major team, getting through the mine field of your conference tournament, then getting the right matchups in the NCAA.

Just in talking to people around town here in Jackson and Athens, I do get the impression that now fans "expect" a Sweet 16 appearance and that anything less is unacceptable or "maybe OK but not that good."

Have we gotten so jaded and delusional in our expectations that we consider a season "not that good" if we don't reach the Sweet 16?

Just going off of what Jeff is saying here: do you know how hard it is to make the Sweet 16 repeatedly? A few years ago, only Xavier and Michigan State were the only two programs to reach the Sweet 16 three years in a row. I believe it was 2008-2010. And what happened the very next year? They both got bounced. Hell, Xavier didn't even make the tournament in 2013, only one year removed from a Sweet 16 in 2012.

If the Ohio fanbase continues on it's current path, it will end up in Butler land. Two Final Fours spoiled them dramatically. You know what happened at Butler before that? In their entire history, they only went to three Sweet Sixteens prior to those two seasons.

Bottom line: it's hard.

I would not expect to make the sweet 16 every year. I wouldn't expect to make it past the first (2nd I guess) round every year. But what I felt JG brought is a new excitement to the program. He was successful in the post-season. HE put Ohio Basketball on the map with his post-season success. I do believe he was on his way to taking Ohio Basketball to the "next level". By that I mean, consistent trip to the NCAA tournament. Some regular season wins over larger programs. Were we there yet? No. Are we there now? No. Is JC going to take us there...I personally don't feel he will. I do NOT consider this season a success. We were decent, but not great. I understand perhaps he hasn't had enough time to build the program. I hope that if he does stay for a few more years that you all are throwing this back in my face at how wrong I was. I can admit my mistakes.

I guess simply put, I want to see Ohio basketball talked about as a Mid-Major power, not a 5 seed in the MAC tourney. Elton Alexander (I know, I know) actually put my sentiments in writing just this morning. He talked of Creighton, Gonzaga, and Wichita State as being the face of their respective leagues. Ohio WAS on the verge of that. I'm not sure we still are. Is that an unfair, premature assessment of Jim Christian. Absolutely. I guess time will tell if it was an accurate one. As I said above, I hope I'm wrong.

No matter what ya do, financial responsibility--spend less than you earn...i.e., saving a lot....will get you through and is much more important than your approach to finance (buy or lease or finance car, etc).

Sorry, but if you're JC (and most of you are), you definitely consider it when someone suggests raising your pay by hundreds of thousands of the dollars per year.

THE REAL POINT:  HOW MANY OF YOU ARE PUTTING WALLET WHERE MOUTH IS.  HOW MANY ARE ATTENDING GAMES (TICKET REVENUES), DONATING TO THE ACADEMIC AND ATHLETIC MISSIONS, ENCOURAGING FELLOW ALUMNI AND FRIENDS TO ATTEND AND DONATE.  Talks is cheap.

So if a competitor of your company offered to quadruple your salary, provide increased exposure and give you access to increased resources to accomplish your job, you would be too embarrassed to leave your current company.

The biggest thing that you're missing here is that your odds of being fired in 3-4 years are likely greater than 50-60%. That's what would give me the most pause. He may have to go to a low major school or be an assistant coach. He's only 49 right now...what not wait for the "right" job instead of jumping at one where there's little reason to think he'll succeed?

So tying for a regular season conference title is NOTHING?  Isn't this hyperbolic?

We all put more emphasis on the post season, but to say a regular season title tie is "nothing" diminishes your argument.

I will say I agree with you on that. The problem is, those program-changing coaches are few and far between and seemingly almost every time they have success they get plucked by a major program. But the foundation was laid by JG, there is no disputing that. I think the jury is still out on if JC is able to carry the torch and keep it aflame or pass it on to someone who can. It's rare you'll have sustained success year in and year out.

Why are you sick of those comparisons? That's what Ohio should strive to be, because with the budget constraints what they are, Ohio can't be a Kansas, Duke, or UCLA.

You may want to research the basketball budgets of "those" schools - Gonzaga, Creighton, Wichita State

I didn't say Ohio's budget was on par with those either. Not even close. But that's what Ohio should shoot for.

So which sport/sports do you wish to sacrifice?  Or do you want to raise the student general fee of $800 up another couple hundred dollars or more?

I don't think the "right" job is the worst job in the ACC. Again, his odds of being fired are upwards of 50%. He could very well be an assistant coach in 5 years. If I'm in his shoes, I'm running the other direction. But we all have different attitudes towards risk.

You've got to be kidding. He's going to be guaranteed seven figures for probably five years for any contract... in the ACC. And it's not the right job? Some of you guys are totally irrational. He'd have to stay in Athens -- and succeed in Athens -- for about 15 years to get that kind of money.

If he's offered the job, he's gone, and anyone who says he's making a mistake just has hurt feelings.

It depends on the the definition of success.  At BC, over a 6 year period if he can win 18+ games 4 of those years and (because it is the ACC) get invited to the dance, THEY would consider that success.  He will not be expected to break the ceiling of Duke, UNC, Cuse, etc.
