Butler and Xavier had assistants waiting in the wings. Ohio has been going outside the program with every hire. Honestly, the time to hire within was when Groce left, the cabinets were full of returning players. If JC leaves, only a few would have even practiced with the team this past year.

I think it depends on the quality of the assistant coach.  Not all assistant coaches are good replacements, sometimes they are.  Billy Hahn was not a good replacement for Danny Nee.

Thankfully Ohio decided to hire outside the program with Groce.  I'd say that worked out.

Well this sucks!  I was hoping that we might have a Keith Dambrot-type of situation with Christian since he's seen the other side and founding it wanting.  That was one of the notches on the plus side for me when we hired him.  But I don't blame Christian for looking into it.  As much as I'd love Ohio to be a destination job it just isn't and isn't ever going to be.

I find it somewhat ironic that the lower than Dog_hit MAC, as evidenced by the nearby thread that references the Hustlebelt diatribe, would have ANYTHING of value.

Yet here we sit as OHIO, possibly on the verge of losing our two most recent BBall coaches to powerhouse conferences the B10 and the ACC.

We should feel quite proud and honored.

Got to say though, I didn't see this one coming IF Christian actually gets
the BC offer.

I wonder if the people at BC have in the back of their minds that JC was at TCU at the time the Frogs were going to go into the Big-12, and JC left there to come to Ohio?

I'm sure there were many reasons why JC left the job at TCU to come to Ohio, and I'm glad he did.  However, I believe he took a pay cut when leaving TCU, and he had an opportunity there to lead a struggling team into a major conference.  He walked away from more money there and a job in the Big-12 there.

Would these items give you pause if you are making the decisions at BC?

I'm sure it gives their fans pause, but I doubt it would affect the hire much. He has a proven track record of success in the top third of all D1 schools. The average fan probably looks at Ohio or Kent State and says they've never heard of them, but consistent winning is hard to do anywhere, and he's done it in more than one place. I don't know who BC fans think they're going to get, but if it's not JC, I don't think it'll be someone with a dramatically better resume.

One thing I find interesting, and I forget where I read it (on WOUB's website maybe?) but apparently JC's interview was by phone.  I cannot imagine BC will hire JC based solely on a phone interview.

Edit: Nevermind?  WOUB says JC "may" have interviewed over the phone.

Has anyone been checking flights between Athens and Boston? I remember someone posting flight info when Groce was flying to Champaign.

So, uh, this could be a big mess recruiting.  I could see all 4 recruits getting released.  That would be 6 holes to fill.  Could set the program back big time.

The anti-Boals folks think he has been passed over for jobs.  You sure he hasn't refused jobs?  Look at Wojo to Marquette.  Wojo could have had tons of jobs over the past several years and says he was waiting for the right one.  I'd do the same if I was Boals.  And, lets be honest, there are only 2-3 MAC jobs that are worth anything.

If I'm Jim Christian I take the BC job.  No question.  ACC.  A program that has had success in the not so distant past.  Life changing money for your family.  Great for assistant coaches.  Good grief.  What's not to like.

In all fairness, $425K a year in Athens/Southeastern Ohio already is life changing money. If his decision at this point in his career is strictly money based, I would be extremely surprised.

As for going to the ACC, he may like the exposure, but may not like the pressure that would come with that particular job. Whoever gets hired there will be under extreme scrutiny to get the program back on track in my opinion. I think he could do it, it would be easier to recruit to the ACC.

However, over the past few years a shift has begun in college basketball. Mid Majors are winning more and more. It is proven that you can win anywhere given the right facilities, fan base, and overall university/community investment. Sure you may not get the McDonalds all Americans but the talent pool is filling up and player development (which I perceive to be his strongest skill) are what are beginning to matter most.

Delta runs 3 daily flights from Port Columbus nonstop to Boston, and Logan Airport has its own metro stop, as does BC's campus

This buyout is chump change.  I never saw this contract before, but now that I see it....it screams that he wouldn't be here long term.  I am actually fairly shocked the number is so low.

Most of the chatter in my circles indicate that Marquette "settled" on Wojo. I don't think this is his dream job so much as it is that he needs to move up  a chair or be relegated to assistantship ad infinitum. I personally do not think it is a good fit but I don't get paid to render an opinion.

I am not going to offer up any opnions because I am still shocked that he would be a candidate. If he gets it ....that is great. Shauz has a chance to hit another home run and OHIO hoops will get another chance to hire someone with a bigger vision similar in scope to the one that turned everything in a different direction in 2008. Sustained success is a good thing.

Athens has one of the highest cost of living in Ohio, housing, groceries and fuel. I hardly call 425K life changing when you are talking about jobs with short life spans.

BC has a 22-19 record in the NCAA tourney, and went 7 times from 2000-2009 with Skinner, none under Donahue. Sounds like a coaching issue, not a dead end job issue to me.

Look at it this way, JC can make more in a 4-5 year contract at BC than he can in 10 years here. And he can always come back to the MAC if it doesn't work out.

And it's Boston, which is not a bad gig if you like big cities.

Time will tell, I guess.

They've had success before but good luck repeating that in the newly formed ACC; UNC, Duke, NC State, Virginia, Cuse, UL, Pitt, Florida State, Miami, Va Tech & Wake are all BETTER programs by light years.

And, Boston cares about college HOCKEY, not basketball or football.

$425,000 is not life changing money. It's a good income, but people who make $425,000 still have a mortgage and tend to finance cars. They worry about saving enough money for college and retirement. Maybe D.A. will disagree, but housing is the only big expense that is exponentially different in Boston. People may upgrade their standard of living in a big city, but the basic goods and services of everyday life are essentially the same everywhere. Making $1,000,000/yr is a huge difference because it allows you to save and invest so much more.

If I'm advising someone to take the job at BC over Ohio, I would agree with Ohio69 on this. It is a great financial move, as well as a more prestigious job in his chosen career field. He may or may not be offered the job, but I cannot see a compelling reason to turn down an offer.
