247Sports.com and Rivals are both showing a verbal commitment from Mishawaka (IN) Marian High School center Kirk Barron. Both 247Sport.com and Rivals rate Barron as 3 stars. The 6-3, 297-pounder chose Ohio over offers from Ball St. and UMass.

With Mr. Barron, Langenkamp, Wood, Murdock, Leavitt there is going to be a short yardage push in their time.  Can someone send them some tapes of a new thing in college called pass protection so they can work on it before they get in. Joking of course, just rarely see high school videos of the linemen in pass pro.

Hopefully we'll have lots of 3rd and 1 situations where they can just line up and "plow".

I'm guessing thats because run-blocking/plowing guys over is more visually impressive for a high-light video

For sure......it depends some on the offense they run in high school.

Murdock should have some experience since they ran a pass happy offense at Dublin.

I was actually thinking that Murdock's highlights were mostly pass blocking. I would agree, though - on a highlight reel run blocking where the defender is driven 15 yards and buried is going to look more impressive than a play where the defender pass rushes and gets nowhere. The pass blocking is equally important, but won't look as impressive, as least to casual viewer.

Also, pass protection is more about technique than brute force (don't get me wrong....brute force certainly helps), and unless you have a high school O-line coach who really knows what he is doing, you're not going to get a lot of focus on good technique.

I love how rivals moved this kid from a 3 star down to a 2 star after giving Ohio a commitment.

Yes, I see they did. In all the time I've been watching, that's the first time I've ever seen them do it, though. I have seen them raise kids after committing to Ohio, however. In the end it's all about how he does on the field, not the stars, anyway.

Agreed. I wish him luck. FWIW, the WOUB article has a small error:
Carter Eckl wrote:
Without his commitment the Bobcats’ 2014 class is down to four players: quarterback Joey Duckworth; tight end Connor Brown; tight end Kyle Kuhar; defensive end Kent Berger; and offensive lineman Stephen Langenkamp.

That's five.

What's OUr record for most decommits in a year?

The Danny Doomers are sayin Duckworth will go....so that would be 2......maybe that's the record.

He's a kid from Indiana. He probably grew up dreaming of playing in the Big Tenfinity. When he accepted the Ohio offer, he had no Tenfinity offers, and then he gets one from one of the schools in his home state.

Maybe, but probably not for long. When Ohio was mostly recruiting under-the-radar players, you weren't going to see this happen very often at all. Now that most of the players Ohio has offered are Big Tenfinity caliber, or close, we will see it more often. We just need to accept that having this happen more is a natural consequence of going after more and more 3-star players.

You will have a strong case for prejudice if he now goes back up to 3 stars, having moved to Purdue.

One decommit and a bunch of guys going somewhere else per ted.  I realize these guys are going to bigger name places and I understand we are recruiting better players early on but we still need to get, keep and sign more of these kinds of guys if we are going anywhwhere.  I guess we haven't arrived yet!.

Recruiting is part art, obviously. Last year they had the class largely filled very early, but people on here complained that they were all 2-star players, and that there weren't enough 3-star players. None of the recruits who accepted last year had any AQ offers.  I have no doubt that they are good players, and that the class was one of the best in Ohio history, but still, with it filling so fast, could they have done even better?

This year they seem to have gone after a slightly higher section of the recruiting spectrum, with the result that a substantial number of the players with offers also have AQ offers. Considering that this will be a smaller recruiting class, I think that was a reasonable decision. If they can land a four or five 3-star players, and then later fill the class with players of the same quality that they normally recruit, this will be an excellent class.

Has Ohio "arrived"? Can they recruit toe-to-toe with AQ schools? No, but with the stratified nature of AQ/non-AQ teams, that isn't surprising. They are certainly recruiting as well as most non-AQ teams, though, which is something that could not be said 8 years ago.
