Kyle Kuhar, a 2014 TE prospect from Avon Lake HS, becomes the first verbal to Ohio's 2014 class. He chose Ohio over offers from Ball St., Buffalo and Western Michigan.

Good grades too

Edit: This is the kind of receiver (and he's lined up out wide in some of these highlights) that always seems to give defenses (particularly MAC defenses) fits: he's tall and big and seems to have good hands. If TT's successor gets the ball in the area, I like this guy as a possession receiver who's tough to bring down.

Also seems to block well on offense and shed/dodge blocks on D.

What's the scoop on this guy? The tape says he runs a 4.8 forty, which isn't blazing, and he doesn't look super fast, but he consistently got behind the secondary. Is Avon Lake a power run/play-action team, and the safeties are just losing track of him?

I like his blocking. Legs keep churning. That's textbook.

I actually like him better on D......if he truly is already in the 250-270 he could be a monster inside or outside on OUr defense.

Tight ends never outrun the secondary - they just get lost on the play action. Usually a linebacker has to pick them up, and they often fail. More impressive to me were the catches he made at wide receiver, because there he was using his size to bring the ball down even in coverage.

I liked his blocking, too, because, watching him on film, he seemed to enjoy it. He went after the defenders with a gusto. I also liked him on defense. I think he would fit on either offense or defense.

That's what I was getting at. How is it that the safeties were consistently losing track of a 6-5 TE on deep middle coverage? Is Avon Lake's run game so good that the safeties' first steps have to be forward in run support?

I'm not saying it's a bad thing if that is the case. Our offense has a different look to it, but the same philosophy I think. Kuhar could be an excellent cog in the machine.

But as Doc said, the thought of a 6-4, 290 DE (Sayles) on one side, with a 6-5, 285 DE (Kuhar) on the other is worth a ponder....

To me he looks like a Sayles clone.....us gettin a bunch of athletes like this coupled with some speed and a decent QB spells domination.

This article lists him as a 6-6, 270-pound DE. Had 13 sacks last year. I've also seen him listed as a TE/OL so there's some flexibility here.

I've done extensive research here.  By which I mean that I've done none at all.

3.5 stars for Kyle.

Unless there has been a change in Avon Lake's style of play the last 3 years, then yes they are a super heavy running team.  Power I with a massive line that overpowers the opponents...  That said, they usually play some tough teams every year.  They are a very good program.

I like big TEs with some speed.

A lot of high schools will instantly put a guy this size on the line and not consider them at TE.  Avon Lake has a very strong tradition of cranking out both lineman and tight ends.

A nice little article on our first commit. It'll be interesting to see what offers he gets next year.. Not that it matters

Watching the Avon Lake vs. Avon on TV. Kuhar is huge, announcer said 6'5 275 pounds.  Not overly impressed though, looked a little bit slow to me. Avon Lake runs the hurry up offense and a lot of the times they have him lined up as a wideout. Made a nice 5 yard catch on a stop route but was called back bc of a flag for holding.

Was at the Avon Lake vs. Berea-Midpark (For those not from Cleveland, Berea and Midpark high schools merged this year) game on Friday in Avon Lake.  Avon Lake's gameplan was clearly to pound the ball.  Kuhar played tight end and had 2 balls thrown his way that were partially defended.  He got his hands on both of them but couldn't haul them in.  Both would have been tough, tough catches.

He never left the field.  Played tight end and Defensive End.  His one-on-one blocking was impressive.  Very big kid and it looks like he could bulk up even more.  Again, Avon Lake looked like they wanted to wear down Berea-Midpark, and they did, so he wasn't used much as a receiver.  Very conservative game plan.  On the two passes that were thrown to him, he didn't show much speed (as indicated on here previously).   My guess is that he projects as a lineman, not tight end in college.

Lots of Ohio hats in the crowd.  Packed house.  Great place to see a high school football game.  And the Berea-Midpark band is styled after the 110 so that was fun to see.

It could happen. A slow TE can end up a fast OT. Not too many years ago Chris Rodgers came in as a TE and ended up a very good LT.

Meant to add that on the defensive side of the ball he held his own and was able to get penetration in the backfield.  The Avon Lake defense played very conservatively (no blitzes) and Berea-Midpark used a lot of mis-directional runs.  It was pretty clear his job was to stay in his lane and try to manhandle the guy in front of him, which he did pretty well.

I have no idea how good Berea-Midpark is supposed to be since the merging of the two schools.  Assuming Avon Lake makes the D-II playoffs, I'll get back for another game.

Avon Lake is the 8 seed in D2 R4. They will be playing at Medina Highland in the opening round who is the 1 seed.

The official recruiting video Ohio released today has Kuhar listed as DL not a TE. I wonder if that is 100% final.

Given Mr. Haser just switched to OL as a RS Soph, nothing is ever 100% final. Also Mr. Sayles was a highly regarded TE and wound up on D. Anyway, as Seattle showed in the Super Bowl, defense wins championships.

Sayles was tried at both TE and DE during fall camp, but earned time at DE, and played well.
