I've been fighting the good fight for many decades in the heart of the evil empire but I'm starting to feel like Sisyphus must have felt long ago when pushing that rock up a mountain.

Let me provide some background information:

The elementary school where I teach is overcrowded this school year by close to 90 students, requiring our high school music teacher/band director to visit our school in the morning to teach music to the fifth graders. The reason being that there are too many classes for our lone music teacher to meet each class twice a week. Things got worse about a month ago when the ever-increasing enrollment numbers necessitated the addition of a fifth kindergarten class. This extra class had to be placed in the room where the fifth-grade classes met for music, which in turn required fifth-grade music to meet in the classroom.

The problem: I was in the classroom this morning during my students' music class when the teacher, a former member of the osu inc. marching band and a buckeye fan, told the students that next week's music class, the last one before Thanksgiving and the osu-michigan game, will involve him showing the class videos of the rivalry and the osu marching band, a tradition he's used in his classes for several years. This is an example of the brainwashing that goes on in Central Ohio, if not all of Ohio, that non-buckeye fans have been fighting for generations. I asked him if he was going to give equal time for the Marching 110 and he replied that he is not a fan of the 110's style. It was at this point that I excused myself from the room less I said something in front of my students that I would regret later.

Possible solution: Typically, I wear a UM shirt the last day of school before the osu-um game to counter all the teachers wearing scarlet and gray. (In fact, I have a photo of the school staff from 4 years ago where every teacher is wearing not only scarlet and gray but also a vest in honor of their honorable coach with me front center wearing a UM shirt). However, I think this year I'll wear that shirt on Monday of next week, the day my students' music teacher will be brainwashing them on osu inc.

I would wear a green OHIO shirt, but that's just my style. At least it's not one of those Miami pedagogical tools? I imagine if it were any other school it wouldn't fly.

Discrimination like this should not be tolerated in our schools, but unfortunately it is all too prevalent.  If you can get to Athens this weekend, try getting some 110 garb -- Specialty Books and College Book Store are your best bets; don't remember seeing anything at LaFollette's.  Or maybe try online since you have a week.  We have a 110 cap we got from Specialty Books a few years ago.

Maybe you can hack the video with 110 videos.

And I'm sure O$U grads think Sisyphus is a social disease.

They do a similar thing where I teach as well.  Before the tOSU game and UM it's always dress in your favorite (Suckeye) garb, and I simply protest and wear OU stuff.  One time another teacher actually got upset that I didn't, and I said, I didn't own any OSU stuff, which is true.

At least the guy actually went to OSU. I think all of your fellow teachers should only be allowed to wear the colors of the school they attended. I think you would see very quickly the grad:sheep ratio. I give a free pass to any Bucknut that actually attended the school. Otherwise, my standard line about Buckeye fan talk (particularly using the term "we") is " Do us all a favor and STFU".

Things I find myself saying to OSU band fans:

1.  And just how hard is it to play follow the leader?

2.  And it's just a four letter word!  If it was Western Middle Tennessee I would give you some points.  But OHIO?

If this kind of thing only happened in elementary schools, it might be overlooked.  Unfortunately, it happens at every restaurant, bar, retail store and workplace in and around Columbus.  If Mitt Romney could have connected with half of these people in the same way he'd have easily won Ohio.

I found myself embarrassed for "adults" who feel perfectly justified in prancing around their workplace every Friday in football jerseys with 19 year old's names on them, wearing buckeye necklaces, buckeye hats, socks, scarves, you name it.

Reference our discussion a while back about what kind of fans we want to hang around OU and these are not them.  They would throw a 20 year old punter under the bus in the blink of an eye (for example).

Start here:  Every time that you see someone wearing the garb of the jr institution in columbus, walk up to them and ask, "How are the Bobcats doing this year?!"

Where's the band?!
WHERE"S THE BAND?!

The sad indoctrination of our youth...  Fun story: my sister went to OSU for five years (Pharmacist)...she went back a week ago for Illinois game...100,000+ at the game and the only person that recognized her was the corner ticket scalper.  She's closer friends with my OU friends than anybody she went to OSU with.

Wear one of "The REAL Ohio" t-shirts and show 110 videos during your classes .

Best advice yet, Bobcat110. I've been showing 110 videos to my students for years. Unfortunately, I've been unsuccessful in finding THE REAL O-H-I-O shirt (in my size). Would love to own one and wear it to confuse all the sheep.

Many years ago, the principal at my sons' elementary school would choose one student each day for the "honor" of raising the OSU flag in front of the school.  My youngest son was chosen for said honor and I suggested that he ask if it would be Ok for him to use an Ohio University flag for that day.  The principal - a real dick - revoked the privilege and told him to tell his father to "grow up."  So I sent a note to the principal suggesting much the same and reminding him that the school is the public's property, not his.  The next year he "retired" then returned to the position to double-dip on his pension and I was among those who voiced complaints to the BOE.  What a mealy mouthed little bastard.

I'm all for fighting against buckeye indoctrination but if you've actually graduated from OSU, and are a former member of their marching band, and are teaching music at a school that (I'm guessing) is closer to the OSU campus than any other college campus, then I can't fault you for sharing your experiences with your students.

Those types of people aren't the problem,  its the Kent State graduate that lives in Toledo and wears scarlet and grey to work every friday that's the problem.

Agreed. The people I know who actually graduated from Ohio State are good, smart, nice people.

Why were they raising an OSU flag?  Does it always fly at this school?

I live in Wisconsin now and my apartment complex is going to have a watch party for UW vs tO$U this weekend. They are now on my anger list due to the fact that they called tO$U "Ohio" today on their advertisement for the game. They got a not so happy call from me complaining about it.
