Did anyone else catch Rufus running out onto the field to tackle brutus when the buckeye cheerleaders/team were on there way on to the field?  it was AWESOME!  Rufus owned brutus.  the continued to wrestle and Rufus just threw him to the ground.  it was awesome and i think i was only able to catch the last fews seconds of it on video.  score one for OHIO.  oh, and the Marching 110 rocked it out of course so make that 2.  2-1, we win!

A friend texted me about it. Sad that we have to rely on mascot capering to feel good about ourselves. Really sad...

Eh, we did it against Buffalo last year, it's not that new.

Personally, I thought that was really bush.  He almost got his butt thrown out.  Not sure who talked to the security to keep him in the stadium.  He was on his way out.  Rufus became very tame after that episode.

That was VERY poor sportsmanship.  Time for a new Rufus.

Some one told me Rufus wiped out pregame and his head fell off...Is that true?

I watched the entire exchange from near field-level and I thought Rufus was way out of line.  It appeared he was the aggessor and yes, he did fall and his head did fall off once.  I think I saw recently two mascots get into a first fight on ESPN a short while ago and I thought Rufus was looking for a similar fate.

On one of the message boards I post on, one of the guys actually is one of their Brutus Buckeyes.

He was in costume for the game yesterday, and here is his take.
(Now, his side may be a little biased too, but I'll give you his side nonetheless)

Quote:
I figured someone would mention this, and yes it was me that was Brutus during this. I'm only going to comment on this once so here's the story.

Basically myself and another cheerleader were running the flag like any other game leading the team out onto the field. All of a sudden I see the bobcat running at me. Obviously at first I was very confused and then realized that he was going to try and tackle me. As he went to tackle me, I lowered my shoulder and sent him to the ground and his head popped off (the pinnacle of mascot embarrassment). I then figured that was over with so I started to walk towards the endzone and was firing up the crowd. All of a sudden I feel someone jump on my back....it was the bobcat. He starts legit punching me so I jump and fall back on my back so that I land on him. He keeps punching so I throw him off of me and walk away.

It wasn't planned and he almost got thrown out of the game. A lot of people asked why I didn't wail on him and my response is not only did I not want that to be my last game (Big 10 has VERY strict rules in regards to mascot fights) but I didn't want the bobcat and OU to make headlines off of Brutus' name and fame. After the first two OSU touchdowns I decided to exact my revenge with a little more class by waving the flag directly in his face and repeatedly pointing to the scoreboard.....and that's all I have to say about that.

At least someone at OHIO was willing to throw down. Because, our team really wasn't.

I hope the university "fires" this kid from the job.  Totally classless.

Wow. This is absolutely embarrassing... I was the Bobcat years ago during basketball season, as I was in the 110 during Fall Quarter. That video made me cringe all over; very unsportsman like. Granted, I would go to the opposing players area and heckle them, but never physically push or tackle them in an aggressive manner. As a mascot, you are a BIG ambassador to the University and you MUST act accordingly.

Then again, and this may seem like a shot at the Athletic Department, it wasn't really difficult to become the Bobcat when I started. No interview, no background check on if I had good interpersonal skills, prior experience, etc. You know, the fundamental requirements that EVERYONE should have if they are to put on that facade of Rufus and represent Ohio University. I simply emailed the department and expressed interest in volunteering (Mind you, this was when we had "Bob", before Rufus). They may have asked me a couple questions, but no where near the amount of screening I thought there should have been.

I know that one can be caught in the moment - when you're in uniform, you feel absolutely invincible as far as what you can do and where you can go in the arena. That is pretty much true, but you have to keep focused on entertaining the fans as the number 1 priority and not let yourself get out of control.

I really wish I could have done more events, including football. It was a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime experience for me - the Rufus at the OSU game clearly does not understand how much of an honor it is to be Ohio University's Bobcat.

Shame on you.

As if yesterday wasn't embarrassing enough. I guess some of our fans got their wish though. The 110 didn't do anything to one up TBDBITL. I guess they will have to settle with a mascot tussle.

Did you see their halftime show?  One of the most genuinely lame things I've ever seen.  If not for Tennessee's rousing "How Much Is That Doggy in the Window," I'd call it the lamest.

anorris, that one completely flew over your head. Search the band threads regarding people wanting the 110 to do things on the field to one up TBDBITL.

I'm not sure if you saw the same halftime shows that we did, but the 110 embarrassed tbdbitl.  Van Halen verses a cartoons show?  Plus they had to rely on field props, people dressed up in characters, using the PA system for sound effects, and putting the cartoon character's picture up on the big screen so you know what formation the band was in.  The 110 relied on their own ability to entertain the crowd and did so quite well.  Tosu fans around me were even ashamed for their own band.

The point of getting into a college marching band is to go up one level from high school.  I even heard next week tosu band is doing High School Musical....I wish that was a joke!

EDIT: sorry Your Name, I didn't read the other thread yet.  but I'll leave the post up, still gets a good point across

Like anorris, you completely missed my point. People on here were hoping that the 110 would do things during the game that would distract from the 110's actual playing. I am glad that the didn't go a similar route that our mascot chose to take. The 110 did a great job all day yesterday representing OU.

I hope that particular Rufus is never permitted to wear the costume again. I thought the Buffalo stunt was put on and blown out of proportion, but if this was the same person, then we've got a pattern of behavior.

If that school up north were to decide not to allow an Ohio mascot at any future event, it would not offend me. Because, really, what other statement could they make?

When I saw it happen live, I thought it was really funny.  After taking a day to think about it, I agree with most about the lack of class Rufus showed.  As an institution, we are developing a real chip on our shoulder about OSU.  I love Ohio University and think we have so many things we do better than them.  Sports is not one of things.  I really wish we did, but we don't.  Taking a cheap shot like that makes us look like collective idiots.  I sat there steaming mad all day about the arrogance of the home team's sheep.  I hate that they wave the state flag, chant our state's name and never use the word State in anything they do.  But, it never occurred to me that I should blindside somebody wearing red.  I'm a little ashamed the clown inside the suit took it upon himself to represent us all that way.

I will say this. I have been one who has wanted Rufus to get into the game and have more banter with the opposing team for years but that was uncalled for. Mascot fights are one thing but you don't interrupt their rituals. If he wanted to fight with him he should have done it one the sidelines when Brutus was down in our side for nearly an entire half. This guy needs to be fired and probably go before judiciaries for breaking student code of conduct. Uncalled for and unappreciated.

Ol' Stoney wouldn't have acted the fool. He'd just do his best to support the boys on the field and be loved by the Ohio fans in the stands.
