Kent will get another crack at winning MAC title next week. It's their 2nd since 2012 ... which is one more than Ohio has had since 2012.

If Kent can win (i.e. outscore NIU) that will leave only two MAC programs with ZERO MAC titles since the league adopted a championship game in 1997.

Eastern Michigan .... and yep, Ohio.

P.S. EMU did win MAC in 1987, so the Hurons still have that over OUr program 🤣

I saw on the ESPN app that plenty of 4 dollar tickets are available for today’s championship game at Ford Field.

Two of the worst drawing teams in the MAC. Kent has few fans, and NIU fans don't travel well. This game goes from crowds that look like below freezing nighttime MACtion games to rather impressive attendance depending on the match up. According to the link below, our matchup with WMU a few years ago was the all-time high attendance with 45,000+. And today's attendance was one of the lowest ever.

[Note: For BLSS' benefit, I put a little hyperbole in that post. It's possibly too subtle for him to catch on first reading, so I thought that this disclaimer might be wise. Hint: It's related to the MACtion reference.]

The WMU fans were there to see the Broncos get into a NY6 bowl game.

Note that all the big crowds involve the Michigans, Toledo or BG. The biggest crowd for a game not including one of those teams was, oddly enough, NIU-Kent in 2012 (18,000+). Both teams were ranked.

Word is the crowds were so sparse that one shuttle bus did the trick.

So, I'll bring up the money thing again. When you see the overall lack of interest in the MAC for even a championship game, why would you throw money at your program and coach?

The coaching money is accelerating which is scary. Liberty a future CUSA program is spending $4 million per year for their coach. It might not be long before we do see $3-4 million dollar coaches in the MAC. I read somewhere where Joe Morehead is going to be making $2.6 million to coach Akron.

Can it or should it be stopped is one question. The other question is does it make sense to individually support a system of escalating salaries for athletics? I don't think its important to the student decision as the cost of attending.

It doesn’t look like they hired him yet. He was making 1M at Oregon. I would hardly think that Akron would pay in that neighborhood. Maybe he wants to be a head coach near his hometown of Pittsburgh.

The trouble is not with the schools that make money and can afford it. It’s MAC type schools who think if they just get the right guy and pay him big bucks, they will jump to the next level. The interest and money is not there in the MAC.

The point of athletics is to market the university and build momentum for it. If prospective students aren't looking at sports as much of the cost of attendance then I wouldn't invest in sports. This is a problem for all universities.

There is a status and everything that goes along with FBS and D1 athletics and salaries that go with that. I'd argue there was a time where Ohio's athletic program was under developed. That is not true anymore. Its on TV, its in post season tournaments and in bowl games. Yet coaches are going to make more and more for the same product. Who does it benefit?

I hate to sound Pollyanna ish, but I think the main point of intercollegiate athletics is to promote the educations of the participants. Marketing the university is important but secondary.

Maybe this is why I'm such a big fan of D3.

The reality is 85% of programs in FBS top out at a double digit win season. Lane Kiffin had a 10 win regular season at Ole Miss so they decide to increase his compensation from $5 million to $7.5 million per year out to 2028. A 50% raise for one lucky season without thought that it was way out of historical norms.

Then he can go 4-8 the following year, get fired and have $50 million left on his contract paid out by the university. As an athletic donor you are supporting this cost madness.

Akron just hired Moorhead. The article says they will pay him much less than what he was making at Oregon. Also, he was the beneficiary of a 9.35M buyout the last time he was a head coach, so sing no sad songs for him.

As long as the MAC can keep it to 2 million per year or less for football and basketball coaches then its reasonable. 1 million per year is economical. Ohio could get out in front of the MAC in basketball by backing up a brinks truck for Boals.

If we lose Boals it isn’t going to be to another MAC school

Boals could be tied up for 2 million while in football we bring in a coach for 950k. I could see that in a few years. Use the higher football salaries of a G5 MAC to justify a much higher basketball salary.
