Western Michigan defeats Toledo 41-38 on a fake spike touchdown. WMU trailed 38-28 with 0:47 seconds remaining in the game before scoring a touchdown, missing the extra point, recovering the onside kick, driving down the field, and scoring again off a fake spike play.

I'm not a college football official, but does anyone else think this is an illegal formation? It looks to me like both guys on the right side are lined up the same, meaning both are either on the line or in the backfield which would mean too many on the line or too many in the backfield, right?

Can an offense have too many on the line?

What impressed me was how fast that play seemed to be called. Had 2 plays already been called with the fake spike one of them? Or was there some oral signal called by the QB as the team was hustling into position?

Fair enough, I learned something today. Thanks!

Totally legal formation. You need 5 on the line wearing 50-79, and no more than 4 in the backfield. To be eligible you must be eligible by both position and number. As for your comment about the two at the top of the formation. Neither go down field so their alignment is a moot point if no more than 4 are in the backfield. As for looking to be "lined up the same". If there is any stagger, you will put them where they need to be and not split hairs.

I created my own personal Heidi Bowl last night. I was watching the game at a friend's house. When Toledo went ahead 38-28, I considered the game "over" and left. Got a text from my friend later telling me Western had won.
