What I also don't understand is that Cromer says nothing changes mathematically to win the MAC because win percentage takes precedence. If you have a team at 4-1 and another at 5-1 at the top of the division, and the 5-1 team's loss is to the former, who goes to the championship? Win percentage favors the 5-1 team.

The MAC kind of worded it that way before previously too, which was confusing, but it also said if teams have the same number of losses that head to head would be the first tiebreaker. So based on how people have discussed it, I think a 4-1 team would win over a 5-1 team if it had the head-to-head win.

Arkley's site recaps the coach's show from last night. Apparently there was one positive test and contact tracing plus a few injuries wiped out a position group. There were talks of moving the game to Saturday, but it was not believed that group would be in the clear by then. I don't see what the problem would have been to tentatively reschedule to Saturday and then make a final call Thursday. They also revealed that this particular group has the 4-6 week injury as well as another season-ender, and that there is a slim possibility the game will still be rescheduled.

What I also don't understand is that Cromer says nothing changes mathematically to win the MAC because win percentage takes precedence. So, the one test allowed us to cancel based on injuries?

It was the test plus the contact tracing plus the injuries that wiped out an entire position group. I haven't seen anything from the MAC, but the SEC requires a team to have seven offensive linemen (which includes one center), one quarterback and four defensive linemen before they can play. So if any one of these position groups is wiped out by a combination of testing, tracing and/or injuries, the game is called off. The MAC may be more liberal, so a game might be called off if, for example, all running backs were unavailable.

I’ll bet in the SEC and Big12 we would have played. Want to take that bet?

I reached out to a couple MAC contacts and have a little more clarity on the matter. Here's what was shared with me:

Win percentage will be the No. 1 determining factor in ranking teams (hold on, there's a twist). For example, a 5-0 team would obviously have a better win percentage than a 5-1 team, so it would get the edge in that case. HOWEVER - if two teams have the same number of losses, but have different win totals (for example, one team is 5-1 and the other is 4-1), then the head to head result of those two teams would then take precedent. After that, a normal tiebreaker process would begin where you start going back through the rankings and compare what the teams did against that team.

With that said, Ohio is still clearly in control of its own destiny then. For example let's say Ohio and Buffalo are the top two in the East, and Ohio wins out to finish 4-1 and Buffalo finishes 5-1. Then Ohio would go to the MACC because despite Buffalo having the better win percentage, since both teams have the same number of losses, Ohio would get the edge because it beat UB head to head.

And, let me see if I'm right here. If OHIO and Miami both win out, they'd both be 4-1. However, because OHIO would be undefeated in the East and Miami would have a loss in the East, OHIO would win, right?

Something like that. As I understand the tiebreakers, they'd go down the standings and look at the two teams' records against each team in order of finish. If Ohio and Fiami tie for first, Buffalo and Kent would finish third and fourth, in some order, and BG and Akron wound be fifth/sixth. Ohio would have the edge because we would beat Buffalo but Fiami lost to them. Both teams would've beaten Kent. So no matter what order Buffalo and Kent would finish in, Ohio would have the edge over Fiami.

Me think it possible.

Yes, they could. But being Buffalo is just 1-11 in Athens, Ohio since 1997, I certainly think Ohio can too!

Yep. But with their defense, it would have to be something like 63-62. They gave up 28 first half points to AKRON, then shut them down in the 2nd half. Buffalo wouldn't be so easy to shut down.
