I'd like to read these. However, there is no reason for me ever to subscribe to the Messenger. Are there any highlights that anyone who has read this can pass along?

Arkley isn’t worth the money, he’s still salty over firing Saul.

Running back: Ross learned from Ouellette and Irons that he had to get bigger and stronger and did, but Albin said he is "right there" with a few other guys to be the lead back. Not a lot was determined in the spring due to guys missing time, including Ross, Portis and Neatherton. As such, Allison got a lot of work in the spring and looked good. Tuggle and Wilson will be added in during fall camp. Projecting Ross as starter, followed by Allison, Tuggle, Wilbon, Neatherton. Also Portis, Barna, Bonner.

Quarterback: Ohio giving Rourke bigger responsibility with calling, changing plays. Will be a new dynamic with receivers, backs. He's also only QB on roster who's thrown a college pass. Other 3 QBs will battle for backup spot: Mischler or K. Rourke probably, followed by Yates.

Wide receiver/tight end: Will be very young, probably will make mistakes, Albin said, but they are talented and will be counted on to make big plays. Odom will be the leader, likely followed by Hooks and Buckner as starters. Cox, Knock, Minter projected backups. Walton likely to get chances. Ohio hopes big receivers Minter or Harris make impact. Also Gouin, Tupa, Keszei, Long for depth and walkons Edwards and Snow. Tight end will be Adam and Ryan Leuhrman, with Adam moving ahead in the spring. Burton after that with freshmen Foster, Clanton both highly rated coming in. Ruozzo, Dietz, Spears, Grooms also on as as walk-ons.

Offensive line: Ohio hired third OL coach in last four years but likes Allen Rudolph. O-line has really been setting a good tone last couple years. Lowery, Anderson, Woods graduating leave big holes to fill but line still expects to be good, led by Pleasants moving to LT. C Hayes started last half of last year. Kitrell began last year as C and will play LG. Meservy started two years ago at RG and backed up Woods last year. Grimes has lots of experience as he steps in at RT. Key is developing depth. Top backups are T Fernandez, G Danneker, G/C Notestine, plus JC transfer T Hoover. After that are Jackson, Gilliland and Rogers at T, Ramer, Kieffer, Beckett at G. Freshman Aronokhale could make immediate impact at G. Also freshmen Amburgey, Vannest at T, Atkinson, Oakes probably at G but still small for now.

I'll add this is just a summary. Lots of good comments, other information on injuries. Worth the subscription if you like in-depth Ohio content, especially during the season. It's the only way small newspapers will continue to exist.

Some new input from spring ball but mostly rehash of stats you can find for yourself. Also common sense assumptions if you follow the team.
I subscribe during the season because the amount of info available during season is better than I can find elsewhere.
I think Arkley's game analysis is good. He has insights from a game which are interesting to me as a fan. He sees things on a higher level than I do. That makes his writing a good value in my opinion. Subscription is pretty cheap.

I really appreciate the summary. Nothing too surprising from your comments. I agree with your comments about small newspapers. The problem with this subscription is that only thing I would care about is Ohio Football (and maybe an occasional basketball article). If I could subscribe to Arkley and have his column added to my news bundle, I would do that.

Hi Jerry,

I'm so glad you didn't injure yourself helping Saul move.

I think as far as ass goes, your's is probably the stinkiest. Maybe more fiber in the diet to fill your hole?

Not unfair to complain about the "Lessenger" and its coverage, reflect back a few month's to the BS coverage that the awesome Post students crushed him on.

If you're an actual 86 grad, your performance standards for all things OU should be much higher.

+1

Jerry’s calling names and insults over the basketball program has become somewhat routine. Someone needs a hug.

Why would someone want to read only people they agree with? I always thought that the main reason for reading opinions was to gain insight on other perspectives. That doesn't mean that when you read someone who disagrees with you, it changes your mind, but rather that you gain insight into why they have that opinion.

These days it's almost like people listen to only one side all the time, and then rather than respecting people with other opinions, they have open hostility for them. Sadly, that hostility pervades all aspects of discussion these days, whether politics, or sports, or whatever, and there is open hostility, almost anger, everywhere.

Defensive line preview just game out today:

https://www.athensmessenger.com/sports/ohiouniversity/que...

Daxon is discussed. The story notes Germano is excited to be returning every player in his unit, the ends, for the first time, hoping that will result in more impact plays. Evans and Ogun-Semore are starters, backed up by Conrad, McKnight, Chukwu. Holes at DT, though. Arp and Baker projected to start. Burks, Coleman, Caesar hope to be in big rotation Ohio likes to use. Redshirt freshmen DEs Baker and McCracken hope to get chances, along with true freshmen DTs Daxon and Burton.

Specifically on Daxon: "It’s thought Daxon — the highest rated player in the class and a former Louisville commit — can come in and complete for playing time as a true freshman."

PS rated Ohio's DL #1 in MAC with Daxon listed as 3rd DT behind Baker and Coleman. PS lists Arp, Burks and Caesar as top 3 NTs.

Daxson not on the 2019 roster.

Troubling.

But not surprising. I hope he shows up sometime before classes start. I think his tweet about committing said something about being qualified. I’m starting to really wonder about what’s going on.

I wouldn't be surprised if he goes JUCO and takes a year to sort out his options. He had a chance a the REAL Miami and Louisville and then had to find a school after he was dropped by L'ville. I would hate to see it happen, but would totally understand.

I got to imagine that the DB group is projected to be one of the big strengths (along with special teams).

There have been some good groups of DBs in the Solich era but this group may have to be the chance to be the best. One of the best top 3 CB group with 3 JRs Hudson, Brooks, and I Motley. Drake is right there too. Then Hagan is the most versatile safety in the MAC and one of the better safeties in college football. Hampton came on last year at the other safety spot in MAC play and the depth is really there at the safety spot. I would guess at least one other safety would be in the mix with this being Hagan's last year. I would like to see Alvin Floyd, Mitchell or a few of the other safeties get some minutes-I think there is talent there.

Arp R-Sr., Baker Sr., Burks R-Jr., Caesar R-So., Coleman R-So. and McCracken R-Fr.. Their class averages 3.5 years. 3.5 years with Dak Notestine. This group spent the past two seasons practicing "butting heads" against the MAC's best OLs. PS rates Ohio's DL as #1 in the MAC. The DTs are missing "starts" but this feels about the same as 2018 with Berger/Payne and 2017 with Porter/Aloese. We still might see a new face like Tom Strobel show up.

I think Arkley's article sums up the D-line well: 'Questions reside inside for Ohio's D-line.' It is clear that Ohio is 2-3 deep at each DE position. If players like Conrad and Chukwudi Chukwu are healthy, we'll have a really nice rotation there.

I feel comfortable calling my shot that Amos Ogun-Semore is going to eventually have a HUGE year. I cant remember a player who plays harder on every snap than Amos. I like watching him compete, and if he can compete as a redshirt freshman, what will happen when he is an upper classman?

Then there is the interior...As others have pointed out, the interior DL could blossom but it I think it is definitely a question mark coming in. Arp and Baker were nice contributors last year but are they as good or better than Payne and Berger? Don't know for sure but it is questionable.

Behind the starters we have a few players that have played some rotation minutes like Kaieem Caesar and then players with no experience but potential. I guess we'll see in the non-conference schedule how the interior d-line will play out...
