With all the important and obviously relevant discussions going on (OSU Spring Camp/Quarterback situation, kneeling in NFL games, gambling, routers), I notice that no one has posted a link to the Orlando Sentinel preseason countdown, and it is already well under way. Here are the MAC teams and Ohio foes reviewed thus far:

Note that it is now behind a paywall, so you can only read a limited number of these highlights.

#126 Kent State: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/newsletter/os-sp-co...
Highlights: New coach is a former Babers assistant, youngest head coach in the country, will bring up-tempo offense, and had one of the best recruiting classes in the MAC last year.

#121 Ball State: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/college/college-gri...
Highlights: After being ravaged with injuries last year, Ball State may rebound

#120 U. Mass: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/college-football-ra...
Highlights: A potent offense, but a questionable front 7 on defense

#117 CMU: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/college/college-gri...
Highlights: team is young, but has some talent

#102 BG: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/college/college-gri...

#97 Akron: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/college/college-gri...
Highlights: Most of the defense will be back, but Chuck Amato retired, and the offense needs to replace a lot of players.

Last year or the year before they started their countdown, then just quit after about a month. Don't know what happened. They usually do a decent analysis, even though they don't spend much time researching the bottom third of D1.

thanks for the links- i enjoyed those articles. I hope we SMASH Akron for that non-sense that went down last year. Also, that UMASS article was a good read. After that unreal number of points we allowed last year, good to know they lost TE Adam Brenneman- he was a key player. Think we will do significantly better this year vs Akron and UMASS (on defense).

here are western and eastern mich

So, still to come are Buffalo, Toledo, and Ohio.

There is a good reason for that. Buffalo was much improved last year, and they return something like 19 starters, including a very capable QB. They will be the second best team in the MAC, in my opinion. Like Ohio, they have a schedule where there are no games they could not win. If the Ohio-Buffalo game was in New York, I'd favor them to win the MAC. Fortunately, the game is in Athens.

How can anyone not be optimistic about this season with this schedule?

According to Sentinel, Miami is the 3rd best team on our schedule, behind Buffalo and NIU.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I'm cautiously pessimistic because of the schedule. The competition doesn't scare me, but the travel schedule in November does. Between Oct. 20 and November 7, we play four games, with the last two on the road. Of those road games, the first is in Kalamazoo, where we haven't won in 20 years, and the second is in Oxford, and Muck Fiami.

The good news is that the #MACtion games are pretty much a level playing field in the respect that all of our opponents in those games are also faced with a tough stretch of games. Injuries are probably the biggest factor in those games. Our depth this year seems fairly solid, but that is definitely my biggest concern particularly with our history in those November games.

Our #MACtion schedule:

Oct 25
Ball State (5 nights rest, coming off home game)
@Ohio (5 nights rest, coming off home game)

Nov 1
Ohio (7 night rest, coming off home game)
@WMU (7 night rest, coming off home game)

Nov 7
Ohio (6 night rest, coming off road game)
@Miami (8 night rest, coming off home game)

Nov 14
Buffalo (8 night rest, coming off home game)
@Ohio (7 night rest, coming off road game)

Nov 23
Akron (6 night rest, coming off home game)
Ohio (9 night rest, coming off home game)

One other random positive I noticed about our MAC schedule from earlier in the season... Even though we will be on the road for NIU in Week 7, they're going to be coming off three straight road games and their OOC schedule is brutal (@Iowa, Utah, @FSU)

I've seen crazier things happen.

The only good thing about the late schedule is 4/6 are at home. The Miami game is big. They come off a longer week than the Bobcats, and Ohio just traveled to Kalamazoo on a short week. Ick. No no no no no no.
