As long as this has devolved into a thread about NJ, my biggest complaint about the gas situation is that those rest areas on the Turnpike have like 30 pumps and only one or two guys working them. You pull up and wait fifteen minutes until he gets to your car. It's the worst system ever.

Careful there. They'll shut down a bridge in your area if you complain too much.

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

That's about as likely as an earthquake hitting Delaware.

They didn't shut down the WHOLE bridge, only all but one of the lanes to get onto it from Fort Lee.

Thing is,at the time, most commuters didn't notice. It wasn't worse then most rush hours. When there's bad weather or an accident its worse.

+1

Years ago,the service areas were run by the Turnpike or Parkway.

Ever since they started leasing the rights to service areas to private companies they've had all kinds of issues.

Most of us "locals" avoid getting gas on the Turnpike or Parkway at all costs.

Oh yea, I've only done it once and then I got smart. But I see the lines every time I stop for a snack or a restroom break.

And did you just admit that government did something better than the private sector? There might be hope for you after all RP :)

Actually, no.
I should have been clearer.

The Turnpike never used their own people to pump gas.

They are also still the controlling agency.

What changed is how the service areas are run.

They used to be run by the fuel supplier.

Now the Turnpike picks the supplier, but the service areas are run by an independent company(s).
I don't know if each service area is "bid" separately or if one company handles all of them.
I do know that the food establishments vary area to area.

I guess their contract(s) doesn't address staffing or wait times.
A lot of people have no choice,or like the fact that their fuel tends to be cheaper.

So I guess you can say that Government ran it better, then made it worse.
