USA Today gave our program an overall B-

http://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2017/01/11/c... /

"Various factors were taken into account, as in a normal classroom. Attendance. Performance. Final exams, otherwise known as the postseason. Combined, these elements make up each team’s final letter grade for the 2016 season."

While Western Michigan was given high marks, so too were their brethren from Ypsilanti, with an A-.

I don't think a B- minus is too far off the mark. I would maybe give the team a B. Lots of good things to take away: road win over a (albeit weak) P5 team, division championship, breakout win in Toledo etc. but also some room for improvement-winning more games at home, secondary play, finishing games etc.

Some pretty strong and steady (traditionally speaking) programs were given F's....

I'd give us a B if we had beaten Texas State. I'd give us a B if we'd beaten Eastern or Central, or if we'd won our bowl. I'd give us a B+ if we'd won two of those three. I'd give us an A- if we'd beaten Western or Tennessee.

We didn't do any of those things though. B- is about right.

bcat2 would give Ohio an A+, like that teacher in every building that every student loves because she/he inflates grades. If you're breathing in my class, you get an A.

Monroe would give Ohio a D, like that tough teacher every building has and no student wants because she/he will kill your GPA.

Without much thought I would put. 6-7 wins in a C range, 8-9 wins in the B range and 10+ wins in the A range. So Ohio in the low B range.

Or you could be the pass/fail course.

You didn't hit the goal of a conference championship, so you fail.

C at best

Very average at 8-6 with so much All-MAC talent on hand.

Less than a C given all we got was 8-6 with the talent on hand and a soft schedule.

Will someone save this thread so we can post the same grades for the same record at the same time next year.

Make it 24 more times and Monroe will be at an even 8500 posts, which sometimes I believe is his #1 priority.

Wrong

Maybe wrong. But at least Monroe is now 1 closer to that magic # of 8500.

Monroe, does your puppy email business sell embroidered waste bags of humanity? I've been looking for one.

So if C is the definition of average....

B- would be classified as just above average?

That pretty much sums up OUr program. Just above average.

Seems right to me.

Except the grade was for the season. Slightly above average season. A program grade should take into account more than just this year's record.

Has to be above average with wins over Toledo and the rest of the East, but man that loss to Texas State was a F. So I'm saying B-. We needed one more win to be a good B. I think it was better than last year regardless of the overall record.

I think B- is fair. MAC East Championship. MACC appearance and Bowl appearance but lost both.

I'm curious what grade Monroe gives us if we have the exact same outcomes in every game this season (including bowl) but score on final drive and beat Western. Monroe likes to harp on demanding more than "average" but if you're truly wanting greatness, does one MAC Championship satisfy that?

Sounds like Frank has the football equivalent of tenure -- automatic contract renewal each year. I'm sure some on this board are thrilled to learn about this arrangement.

I would rather have a loyal, consistent head coach like Frank - than serve as a stop gap for young coaches like P.J. Fleck.

"A revolving door leads nowhere"

Apply that logic to hoops and Larry Hunter is still at the Convo, and we have zero NCAA Tournament wins in that span as opposed to three.

Western had an undefeated regular season, massive media coverage, a MAC Championship and a solid showing in a major bowl. They'll take a hit rebuilding around a new coach but that's a small price to pay.

We have reached that point, same number of years, but Larry had more championships and a larger period on the national stage. He also had a MAC Championship and a website with his head bouncing inside a basketball across the "Fire Larry Hunter Page"

The obvious difference is that pre-Larry Hunter, our program hadn't already been a joke for decades. Ohio Basketball has been consistently good through the decades. Ohio Football was a joke before Frank Solich.

How many years did we go without a bowl win? Frank changed that.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Frank changed that with a significant financial infusion his predecessors did not enjoy. Lichtenberg's strength and conditioning program was run by the tight ends coach, as I recall.

That's when the TE coach wasn't on the road recruiting. For a long while it was an honor sheet sign-in/sign-out.

Grobe had a strength coach, but no money to keep the kids over the summer.

None had hotel rooms or meals to help.

Noted. However, would it be fair to say as Ohio has gained those who were far ahead back then have continued to build and have maintained their good lead that they enjoyed over Ohio in Lechtenberg's and Grobe's time?

No, not even close, from coaches salaries, overall money spent, etc. OHIO has closed the gap immensely in the past 12 years.
