How do you make it less about an "eye-test" and more about a real thing you can objectively measure and attain? Winning you conference seems like a pretty simple thing to point to and that everyone knows up front. [/QUOTE]

Here is the problem with your proposal. as you stated, "you can objectively measure..." For Example; Winning the Big 12 may or may not be equal to winning the SEC. It can't be an objective measure if the qualifying wins are against different opponents.

On a very slight tangent: WTH is the committee going to do if Penn State whips Wisconsin in the B1G+ Conference Championship? If they pick O$U and don't also pick PSU, they'll have a riot to deal with. On the other hand, if they let both the Evil Empire and PSU into the dance, they'll have a riot from different quarters to deal with -- like the fans of every other P5 Conference. I'm rooting for this scenario because it'll be so much fun watching one or other of the riots. ;-)

Dream chaos scenario:

Washington, Clemson, and Penn State all lose their respective championship games.

That puts Alabama and Ohio State in for sure. Then who else do you put in? I would say Wisconsin, since they earned the right by winning the Big Ten. Let them and Ohio State rematch as the #2 and #3. As for #4, there is a strong argument that Michigan could get back in this thing. They would have a better resume than USC, Colorado, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Washington and presumably Clemson also.

Could they really let three Big Ten teams in to try and slay Alabama?

You are even more nefarious than I am. Well done!

I'd be more in favor of the conference championship litmus test if every team in the conference played every team.

But then we'd have to go back to 10-team conferences and dump the championship games.

Which I'd be okay with.
